Selected Titles for November 2021
With the development of the last 18 months, all of our usual events (old house fairs, book and paper shows) have gone virtual, leaving us with very few photo ops of late. And, as if that wasn't bad enough, a large Nor'easter came through and clobbered our usual brilliant fall foliage. So, in the interest of featuring the seasonal beauty of New England, I'm featuring last year's show-off photo of the old T-Bird in front of a photogenic maple.
Two years ago, I took in a wonderful performance at Club Passim, in Harvard Square, by a young Berklee College of Music graduate, Liz Longley. She is back touring and I took my two daughters to her show up in Portland, at One Longfellow Square. Do yourself a favor, take a look at her website and touring schedule. If/when she is in your area, take in her show.
On a sad note, we recently lost a giant in the world of auctioneers, appraisers and antiquarians, Carl Stinson. Carl was a colleague, and close personal friend. He would call up Saturday afternoon, and invite me to join him Sunday for the wholesale antiques mart in Bedford, New Hampshire. Our pick-up time was usually 5:00am, but Carl would be out in my driveway honking his horn at 4:30! He had the best eyes in the business, and a memory like a steel trap. My kids used to swim in his pool all summer. He was a young 87 and will be missed.

Judging by the weather, and all the TV ads, I'd say the holiday season is already upon us. With that in mind, we are offering a nice array of gift-worthy books. Some you will recognize from earlier: John Leeke's wonderful how-to titles, Steve Jordan's window titles, and, my favorite, our Swiss Cat Ladder book, which I have for this season only. I stacked away a few copies from the only edition of 1000 copies. Good books make nice gifts, and who doesn't have a friend with a cat?

As always, happy browsing!

Cape Cod
Thoreau, Henry D.
[New England]. Thoreau, Henry D. Cape Cod. Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin, 1914. Early Edition. Octavo, pp. xi, 336, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Decorated Cloth over Boards. Very Good; front endpapers are discolored from laid-in acidic papers (no longer with the book).

Cape Cod chronicles Henry David Thoreau’s journey of discovery along this evocative stretch of Massachusetts coastline, during which time he came to understand the complex relationship between the sea and the shore. He spent his nights in lighthouses, in fishing huts, and on isolated farms. He passed his days wandering the beaches, where he observed the wide variety of life and death offered up by the ocean. Through these observations, Thoreau discovered that the only way to truly know the sea—its depth, its wildness, and the natural life it contained—was to study it from the shore. Like his most famous work, Walden, this book is full of Thoreau’s unique perceptions and precise descriptions. But it is also full of his own joy and wonder at having stumbled across a new frontier so close to home, where a man may stand and “put all America behind him.” The book is beautifully preserved and its cover illustration is bright and clean. This could make a wonderful holiday gift for the Cape Cod fan in your life. (20742)   $150.00

Old Marblehead

[New England]. Chamberlain, Samuel. Old Marblehead A Camera Impression. New York: Hastings House, 1940. First edition. 12mo, pp. 73, illustrated with b/w photographs. Boards. Very Good; 1.5" split at spine.

Few towns are as superbly equipped as Marblehead, Massachusetts, to provide a graphic and concentrated cross section of early New England and its graceful way of living. Closely built on its ledges of rock, and amazingly well preserved despite two serious fires, Marblehead still presents to the visitor the picture of an ancient New England town. The opulent mansions of the merchant princes and the humbler dwellings of the fishermen are still in place, to call up memories of the town's pre-Revolutionary greatness as a shipping and fishing port. This little book aspires to give an impression of the beauties of this unforgettable old New England town. Many winter scenes are shown, for Marblehead is at its loveliest after a snowstorm. By dodging automobiles and telephone poles, the photographer tries to catch the Marblehead which delights the artist and visitor alike. A charming photographic portrait of Marblehead. When Brooklyn Was the World 1920-1957

For Brooklyn, the years between 1920 and 1957 were a special time. It was in 1920 that the subway system reached to Brooklyn's outer edge, linking the entire borough with Manhattan and making it an ideal spot for millions of new families to build their homes. The end of the era came in 1957 - the last year that Brooklyn's beloved Dodgers played at Ebbets Field before moving to sunny California. With a brilliant, entertaining text and hundreds of exciting, nostalgic photographs (many never before published), this book recovers the history of this lively city, as remembered by the millions of people who knew Brooklyn in its golden era. New York in the Forties
Feininger, Andreas [Photographer]; text by John von Hartz
[New York]. von Hartz, John. New York in the Forties 162 photographs. New York: Dover Publications, Inc,, 1978. First edition. Quarto, pp. 181, illustrated with b/w photographs. Oversized Paperback. Very Good in Wraps.

Like any great city, New York has experienced the best of times and the worst of times. The 1940s were among the best of times. It was an era of turmoil without social upheaval, a time of transition made quietly behind a facade of normality. The 1940s linger in the collective consciousness of New Yorkers as "the good old days." Photographer Andreas Feininger observed this intriguing decade with his practiced photographer's eye alert for every detail. As an artist and reporter, Feininger transmits the innocence of the age and the humanity of its people. His clean, uncluttered photographs catch the city with unabashed honesty. By studying what he has observed, we can recapture the look and texture of that remarkable time. (20762)   $30.00

The Nineteenth-Century Architecture of Saratoga Springs
Prokopoff, Stephen S. and Joan C. Siegfried
[New York]. Prokopoff, Stephen S. and Joan C. Siegfried. The Nineteenth-Century Architecture of Saratoga Springs Architecture Worth Saving in New York State. New York: New York State Council on the Arts, 1970. First edition. 12mo, pp. 104, illustrated with b/w photographs. Perfect Bound. Very Good in Wraps.

The New York State Council on the Arts began its Architecture Worth Saving series as a modest basis for public policy on the preservation of the states architectural past. In no time at all, the Council received several manuscripts on regional New York State architecture that had been initiated locally. This book on the architecture of Saratoga Springs is one that grew from the enthusiasm of several dedicated people whose intense pleasure in the architectural care and beauty they saw around them provoked their desire to share it with others. For some it will provide a pleasing panorama of the 19th century architecture of one of New York State's most architecturally distinguished communities. For others it will be a unique opportunity to develop a feeling of how the community evolved architecturally into its full flourish of Victorian expansiveness. The published work was a posthumous salute to Joe Alper, whose photographs make an indelible statement for the cause of conserving the historic architecture of New York State. (20781)   $35.00

Material Culture of the Wooden Age

This collection of ten original essays examines the influence of wood technology upon the development of America's material environment in the 18th and 19th centuries. The authors show that ease of access to this abundant, renewable resource led to its use in agriculture, transportation, and industry. Over 90 illustrations are included in this volume, which underscore the importance of wood during the period known as America's Wooden Age. Although this is a study of an earlier age, our current concern over dwindling energy resources makes its theme especially relevant today. As a renewable resource with multiple applications in the areas of energy, building, and industry, wood has a special claim to our attention. (20787)   $30.00

Timber and Iron Reinforcement in Early Buildings
Wilcox, R. P.
[Wood]. Wilcox, R. P. Timber and Iron Reinforcement in Early Buildings. London: The Society of Antiquaries, 1981. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 112, illustrated with b/w photographs and drawings. Perfect Bound. Very Good.

The use of reinforcement in building has a very long history, attempting to resist stresses and strains cause by earthquakes, settling, and enemy attack. Three types of reinforcement are discussed in this book. Intramural timber reinforcement and foundation reinforcement were hidden in the walls or under the floors. The third, obvious to the casual eye, was the use of timber and iron reinforcement in the interior of buildings, for example tying together the haunches of arches in a nave arcade. The profuse illustrations and photographs help the reader to understand the construction details, and a detailed bibliography leads to other related research. (20786)   $40.00

The History of the Dwelling House and its Future
Thompson, Robert Ellis
[Urban Studies]. Thompson, Robert Ellis. The History of the Dwelling House and its Future. Philadelphia, PA: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1914. First edition. Small octavo, pp. 172, indexed. Decorated Boards. Very Good in Fair Mylar-Protected DJ.

The author takes us through the evolution of the home, from tree houses in the tropics to the ancient Greek homes with one large room, to cave dwellers in northern Europe, to the old hall style that held many families in one dwelling, to the single family dwelling and beyond. The last chapters make some predictions about how the home of the future and the city streets will be constructed, which is very entertaining reading. Some of it was spot on, predicting that the horse would be replaced by cars completely. Others were hilarious, such as the construction of sidewalks at the second story level to keep pedestrians separated from auto traffic. Wouldn't that be nice! An entertaining book for anyone interested in residential and urban planning. (20317)   $30.00

Small quarto, pp. xxvi, 261, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Includes a custom bookmark signed with original pen and ink drawing by the author. Color Pictorial Wraps. New.

This book analyzes a period when millions of average Americans saw accelerated improvement in their housing and domestic conditions. It is a detailed narrative that traces changes in household hygiene, sociability, and privacy practices that launched large portions of the working classes into the middle class, reconfiguring and enriching the standard account of the domestic transformation of the American home. "This book is the most important study of common American houses to appear in the past half century. Thomas C. Hubka draws on a lifetime’s investigation of working-class houses in the decades before World War II to show us how and why the single-family houses of the contemporary ‘middle-majority’ sprung from these modest dwellings. Hubka has established an agenda that should engross architectural historians for years. " -- Dell Upton, author of American Architecture: A Thematic History. As with all of Hubka's books, very thought-provoking. (20290)   $40.00

The House and Home:
A review of 900 years of House planning and furnishing in Britain
Barley, M. W.
[International]. Barley, M. W. The House and Home: A review of 900 years of House planning and furnishing in Britain. Greenwich, CT: New York Graphic Society Ltd, 1963. First edition. Octavo, pp. 208, indexed, with 230 illustrations. Original Cloth. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

There are two ways to look at the development of the house: one is to see it as the solution of the technical problem of providing shelter for the family. The other is to see it as an expression of social needs. In this book, the British house is related to the social setting and conventions that shaped it, and this book is thus much more than an architectural history. Taking the Middle Ages as a starting point, the author studies dwellings on all social levels and in both rural and urban areas throughout Great Britain. He shows how the forms of the house, its amenities and even its furnishings, have been altered by historical conditions, such as the shift from the house as the place of work, population expansions, or the growth of retailing and credit trading. A fascinating visual history of the way the British family has lived from the Norman Conquest to today. (3800)   $25.00

Architecture and Sculpture in Ireland 1150-1350
Stalley, R. A.
[International]. Stalley, R. A. Architecture and Sculpture in Ireland 1150-1350. New York: Barnes & Noble Books, 1971. First American edition. Small quarto, pp. 149, illustrated with 75 superb b/w photographs, many of which were commissioned or taken by the author, and 20 detailed architectural plans of the more important buildings. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Chipped and Torn DJ.

The two centuries from 1150 to 1350 form an exciting and distinct phase in Irish architectural history. The period opens with the spread of Cistercian monasteries, when a new concept of church architecture was first introduced in Ireland; it ends with the sharp decline in major building projects, which resulted from the economic and social troubles of the early 14th century. The period thus encompasses the most flourishing period of Anglo-Norman rule. This was an era of relative prosperity, a prosperity which is reflected in the architecture of the time. Chapters examine patrons, craftsmen, castles, cathedrals, abbeys and friaries. A map illustrates the location of each project discussed. (20782)   $30.00

Conant, Kenneth John
[International]. Conant, Kenneth John. Carolingian and Romanesque Architecture 800 to 1200 The Pelican History of Art. Harmondsworth: Penguin Books, 1959. First edition. Octavo, pp. xxxviii, 343, indexed, 176 pages of plates and 80 line illustrations, as well as 15 restoration studies. Original Cloth. Very Good in Good DJ, some pencil underlinings.

This volume embodies many years of research by the author, who was personally familiar with the entire Carolingian and Romanesque area. A close study of Cluny Abbey and of other lost monuments has contributed to a far more complete and consecutive account of the two styles than has hitherto been feasible. The great buildings have been placed in their historical and in their natural physical settings. Due attention is paid to the economic, intellectual, and spiritual forces which produced them, and to the life which was lived in them. Both Cluniac and Cistercian monasticism are considered. Bernard Maybeck, recipient of the Gold Medal of the American Institute of Architects, is among the most important architects of the 20th century, with most of his work being done in Northern California. His architecture was as unique, individual and unclassifiable as the man himself, but included such masterworks as the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Berkeley, and the famous Gothic mansion, "Wyntoon," built for the Hearsts in 1902. Maybeck was an artisan, an architect, and artist of excellence. This book is a tribute to the man and the artist. From the Old House Journal reference library. (20774)   $30.00

M. H. Baillie Scott and the Arts and Crafts Movement
Kornwolf, James D.
[Arts & Crafts Style]. Kornwolf, James D. M. H. Baillie Scott and the Arts and Crafts Movement Pioneers of Modern Design. Baltimore, MD: Johns Hopkins Press, 1972. First edition. Small quarto, pp. xxx, 588, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

During a career that spanned the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott (1865-1945) exerted a profound influence on both Modern architecture and the Arts and Crafts movement. He specialized in designing the small house and its furnishings, and through his many periodical articles and books his revolutionary designs and theories spread throughout Europe and America, attracting the greatest attention between 1890 and 1907. Because all of Baillie Scott's records, drawings and personal papers were lost when his London office was destroyed in WWII, architectural historians have been handicapped in assessing his contribution. In reconstructing Scott's career, the author makes extensive use of English, German, Austrian, and American journals of art, architecture, and design from 1880 to 1940, and previously unpublished material to delineate the career of one of England's most noted architects. Rudolf M. Schindler (1887-1953) is regarded today as an outstanding exponent and pioneer of the California modernist style. Schindler's vision, revealed in his Hollywood residence (1922) and his 1926 beach house design for Philip Lovell, proved to have a lasting influence on the development of modern architecture in California. Schindler created over 500 building designs in his lifetime. More than 150 of these, mostly family residences, were actually built, and the many still in existence were photographed for this book. From the Old House Journal reference library. (20772)   $30.00

Anarchitecture: Architecture is a Political Act
Woods, Lebbeus
[Architectural Monograph]. Woods, Lebbeus. Anarchitecture: Architecture is a Political Act Architectural Monographs No. 22. London: St Martin's Press, 1992. First edition. Quarto, pp. 144, indexed, illustrated with b/w and color drawings. Oversized Paperback. Very Good.

Lebbeus Woods' architecture is one of continual research. His drawings are propositions of new ways of living, rather than merely new ways of building. This monograph illustrates the range of Woods' ideas. The projects featured here are from the 1980s, but have been developed over a whole career, and include the Zagreb Free Zone and Berlin Free Zone designs as well as the earlier projects such as Four Cities and Centricity. Together with texts by the architect, they show an architecture informed by science and politics. The force behind the images, models and installations is immense, illustrating an architecture instrumental to the processes of experimentation, change and freedom. The larger-than-life figure of architect Stanford White dominated New York's Gilded Age, the last quarter of the 19th century, a time when great fortunes were made and spent and social ambitions soared without limits. As upstart dynasties created new empires of wealth, White captured their desire for aristocratic grandeur in his stunning buildings and interior decor. This impresario embodied the flamboyance of the age in both his work and his life, in his meteoric rise to tastemaker and intimate of the rich, and in his scandalous affairs and infamous demise. Storage and Ice House Construction with Denison Interlocking Tile

This pamphlet highlighted Denison interlocking building tile, which was a hard burned, hollow clay tile designed for bearing walls, curtain walls, foundations, and partitions in all kinds of buildings. The tile was touted to be waterproof and fireproof, and to have great strength and insulating properties. Commercial buildings that used Denison tile were pictured in this booklet, including the citrus packing plant for Murphy Oil in Whittier, California; the fruit warehouse and cold storage for Meadow Lake Orchard in Meadow Lake, Washington; the Wenatchee Valley Fruit Exchange's fruit warehouse in Wenatchee, Washington; and more. An article by Ralph Spaulding, printed in June 1915 in Refrigerating World, discussed the construction of an ice house using Denison tile, and the article was reprinted in part in this pamphlet. Potato storage buildings are also discussed in this pamphlet, and the photos of them are quite distinctive-looking. An interesting glimpse into the final decades of ice house refrigeration. Chapters cover the historic and artistic influences from many countries such as England, France, Italy, Scotland, Germany, Spain, Russia and Belgium; and the practical details of staircase construction. How Louisiana Cypress Safeguards the Builder's Investment
Louisiana Red Cypress Bureau, New Orleans, LA
[Wood]. Louisiana Red Cypress Bureau. How Louisiana Cypress Safeguards the Builder's Investment Facts Every Home-Builder and User of Wood Should Know. New Orleans, LA: Louisiana Red Cypress Bureau, nd c. 1920s. First edition. Quarto, pp. 32, illustrated with b/w photographs. Staplebound Wraps. Very Good.

The best cypress grows within 200 miles of the sea. The low swamp lands of Louisiana are its natural habitat. Louisiana red cypress is a tree of very slow growth. It requires hundreds of years to mature, and during these years, Nature stores within the cells of this remarkable tree an antiseptic preservative which effectively protects this wood against deterioration and loss of strength for a very long time. In many instances, the chemical life of Louisiana red cypress has proved to be longer than its mechanical life: the wood wearing from the friction of generations of weathering, and not being attacked by rot at all. This book illustrates buildings, trellises, lawn furniture, and interior built-ins constructed of Louisiana red cypress. A valuable resource for anyone who uses cypress in their work. Very rare; no other copies available anywhere. (20760)   $135.00

Its aim was to point out in a general way the location of workable sandstone deposits in the US, and to outline the most efficient and economical methods of quarrying and preparing the rock for structural and other purposes. A feature of interest is a brief presentation of the distribution of serviceable sandstone by type and geologic age in every state. (20748)   $50.00

P. B. Wight: Architect, Contractor, and Critic, 1838-1925
Landau, Sarah Bradford
[Architectural Monograph]. Landau, Sarah Bradford. P. B. Wight: Architect, Contractor, and Critic, 1838-1925 An Exhibition Organized by the Burnham Library of Architecture, The Art Institute of Chicago; Checklists of Wight's Publications, his Buildings and Projects, and those of the firm of Carter, Drake and Wight. Chicago, IL: Art Institute of Chicago, 1981. First edition. Quarto, pp. 108, illustrated with b/w drawings and photographs. Color Pictorial Wraps. Very Good.

Wight is one of many Chicago architects who, while influential within his own lifetime, has been neglected by recent historians who have stressed Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Wight's drawings were buried in the Archives of the Burnham Library since their donation in 1918, a casualty of the previous emphasis on those Chicago greats, and the antagonism of the modern movement and its functionalist doctrines to the elaborate decoration of Victorian architecture. The Wight Collection remained virtually unknown to students and scholars alike until this exhibition in 1918. The exhibition and this catalog present Wight's forgotten contribution to American architecture and the gem-like quality of his designs to a post-modern age that is more receptive to the artistic impact of architectural drawings.
