Selected Titles for November 2023 | |
October was a busy month for us here at World Headquarters. I'm just back from the annual Boston Book Fair at the Hynes Convention Center. Even better yet was the so-called Shadow Show, just a 5-minute walk from the Hynes, where I found a huge crowd, and 40 or so colleagues with wares priced to sell. We got a few things, which will appear next month.
Our first photo is of our friend and colleague Jim Turner, upstaged by a complicated wood window! Jim was attending the Window Collaborative event, in Pine Mountain, Kentucky. He is a specialist in steel window restoration, out of the Detroit area. It was attended by over 60 window restoration specialists, most of whom were just starting out (i.e., young!), which is great for the industry. See this 15-minute YouTube video to get an idea of the multi-day event: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEH2CiFf9SI
| |
Our second photo features a wonderful scagliola bowl that our good friend, author and world traveler David Hayles made for me. Hank, our bookstore cat, is there for scale on this 17" diametered beauty. We are featuring David's scarce title Scagliola (see #25 below), and I believe we have the only copies available.
We have a number of new subscribers to our monthly e-catalog, some who are also new to the world of cultural and architectural restoration. At the request of some of our more senior customers, we are featuring a few titles that are "must have," for any professionals, such as the Audels 4-volume sets on carpentry and masonry.
We are going to get our December newsletter out in early December, with a number of giftworthy titles, so stay tuned!
Happy browsing!

The story begins in the period when preservation shifted from volunteer efforts to save individual buildings to an increasing involvement by professionals in large-scale preservation projects. Hosmer perceptively reconstructs the personalities of those most deeply involved in the field and captures the sense of action and urgency that often accompanied preservation. Within the broader drama are many fascinating behind-the-scenes stories never before made public. The wide range of sources includes interviews with more than 80 preservationists as well as letters, minutes, reports, and manuscripts in archives throughout the United States. The 225 illustrations in the book accurately reflect America's slowly awakening interest in its own cultural past. This is the first time we've had a complete set to offer for sale. (22259) $80.00

There are four scales on this ruler. On the front of the rule, the first scale measures inches, but numbers it so that 1 inch = 4 feet. The other scale measures joists 16" on centers, with each tick mark being about 5/16" apart. The two scales on the back of the ruler double the scale so that 1 inch = 8 feet. Advertising wooden ruler. Very Good.
The front of this ruler celebrated the development of lapidensin, a colorless liquid which waterproofed and dampproofed exterior masonry walls above grade, including brick, stone, and stucco. The back side of the ruler advertised their floor hardeners, such as Duromit, Durocrete, and Dust-A-Lay. An interesting, collectible advertising piece. (20688) $25.00

Tracing its roots to the arrival in Boston in 1874 of Henry Hobson Richardson, Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott is one of the oldest continuously practicing architectural firms in the United States. Richardson came to Boston to design Trinity Church in Copley Square and stayed on to build one of the most distinguished records in the history of American architecture. Today, the firm he bequeathed to his successors enjoys a national reputation for its design expertise in educational, medical, scientific research, corporate, and civic buildings. With the publication of this book on the occasion of its 125th anniversary. SBRA reflects on its past to recognize what is distinct and abiding about its journey from then and now. Architectural Graphics Standards by Charles George Ramsey and Harold Reeve Sleeper, first published in 1932 (and now in its eleventh edition), is a definitive technical reference for architects-the one book that every architect needs to own. The authors, one a draftsman and the other an architect, created a graphic compilation of standards that amounted to an index of the combined knowledge of their profession. This first comprehensive history of Ramsey and Sleeper's classic work explores the changing practical uses that this "draftsman's Bible" has served, as well as the ways in which it has registered the shifts within the architectural profession since the first half of the twentieth century. When Architectural Graphics Standards first appeared, architecture was undergoing its transition from vocation to profession-from the draftsman's craft to the architect's academically based knowledge with a concomitant rise in social status. The older "drafting culture" gave way to massive postwar changes in design and building practice. Writing a history of the architectural profession from the bottom up-from the standpoint of the architectural draftsman-George Barnett Johnston clarifies the role and status of the subordinate architectural workers who once made up the base of the profession. Johnston's account of the evolution of Ramsey and Sleeper's book also offers a case study of the social hierarchies embedded within architecture's division of labor. Johnston investigates what became of the draftsman, and what became of drafting culture, and asks - importantly, in today's era of digital formats - what price is exacted from architectural labor as architecture pursues new professional ideals. Modern Architecture Through Case Studies

[Urban Studies]. Jones, Peter Blundell. Modern Architecture Through Case Studies. Oxford: Architectural Press, 2002. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 255, indexed, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Cloth over Boards. As New in Fine DJ.
Peter Blundell Jones details the inadequacy of the first histories of the Modern Movement by revealing the existence of suppressed alternative traditions within the movement and shows their great diversity through the use of case studies. Each case is analyzed in detail then used as a springboard to explore different theoretical approaches. Case studies are shown to be the most effective way to explore this diversity and to get closer to the buildings discussed. Blundell Jones uses the Weissenhof as a general comparative study that is followed by single examples by chosen architects, each taking a particular set of themes. Reappraise the modern movement with this informative, scholarly, and insightful text. (22249) $30.00

Art Deco - the style of the flapper, the luxury ocean liner, and the skyscraper - came to epitomize the glamour, luxury, and hedonism of the Jazz Age. It burst onto the world stage at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Art Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris and quickly swept the globe. Its influence was felt everywhere, from the skylines of New York and Shanghai to the design of fashionable evening wear, jewelry, and plastic radios. Above all, it became the style of the pleasure palaces of the age - hotels, nightclubs, and movie theaters. This authoritative publication brings together leading experts in the field to explore the sources, varied forms of expression, distinct visual language, and global reach of Art Deco. With its breathtaking illustrations, this lavish volume is the definitive book on what is, arguably, the most popular style of the 20th century. (22278) $40.00

Lewis Mumford: A Life
Miller, Donald L.
|
[Architectural Monograph]. Miller, Donald L. Lewis Mumford: A Life. New York: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1989. First edition, as stated. Octavo, pp. 628, indexed, illustrated with b/w photos. Original Cloth. As New in Fine DJ.
Malcolm Cowley called Lewis Mumford "the last of the great humanists," and indeed, in more than six decades of writing, Mumford made contributions to history, philosophy, literature, art, architectural criticism, and urban planning. The author of some thirty books, Mumford produced a body of work almost unequaled in the twentieth century for its range and richness. A New York Times Notable Book, Donald Miller's engagingly written biography reveals Mumford's full and fascinating life. Based on ten years of research and unprecedented access to original and private papers, Miller penetrates Mumford's reserved public persona and takes in the complete man, his works as well as his days, as he struggles to transform the world -- and his own life -- in decades marked by unparalleled change. "A gracefully written biography." (Francesca McKeon, San Francisco Chronicle) (4574) $20.00
