Selected Titles for September 2019

Welcome to the September newsletter! For the first time in years, I did not make it to the annual Preservation Trades Network's annual meeting - held in Scotland this year! Almost 100 members made it to the annual meeting. Here is a photo to show what I missed. On the left is David Harrison of Hayles & Howe in the UK, and on the right is David Hayles, originator of the firm and the author of a book on scagliola, which we have sold in this newsletter in the past. David Hayles just finished a ride around the world on an e-bike!

And fellow preservationist and author Brent Hull of Hull Historical stopped by for some book browsing and for a ride in my 1959 Thunderbird convertible.

In this newsletter we have some exciting new arrivals, including books by popular authors Eric Sloane (all signed with an original drawing and an autograph!) and Royal Barry Wills, and a stunning collection of Victorian-era wallpaper sample books.

Happy browsing!               Steven

Houses for Good Living
Wills, Royal Barry
[Pattern Book]. Wills, Royal Barry (Associates: Richard Wills, Robert Minot,Warren Rohter). Houses for Good Living. New York: Architectural Book Publishing Co., 1940. First edition. Quarto, pp. 104, sumptuously illustrated w/ b/w photographs, floor plans, and preliminary architectural sketches. Book plate from previous owner inside front cover. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Fine DJ.

In this book, Royal Barry Wills, nationally known architect who has won honors in the residential-design field, shows how you can analyze your building needs and adapt one of the standard styles or "go modern"; how to budget your building money and save on costs; and what to expect from your architect. A section devoted to pictures and plans shows the reader how houses are planned to fit the needs they must serve, and how they appear when the plans have been turned into glass and wood, brick and stone. To the reader's benefit, the author genially leads from amusing but valuable observations to the lessons that flow from them. By the end of the book, one has a good working conception of how prospective home owner, architect and builder can coolaborate successfully. Lovely book, scarce in any condition. In addition to the colonial style houses and floor plans, there is an entire section on entrances and details, as well as a chapter on larger buildings. (19633)    $50.00

Houses for Homemakers
Wills, Royal Barry
[Pattern Book]. Wills, Royal Barry. Houses for Homemakers. New York: Franklin Watts, Inc., 1945. First edition. Quarto,pp 94. filled with architectural renderings and floor plans on each page. A previous owner left short comments in colored pencil on some pages. Color Pictorial Wraps, umber. Good; front cover detached.

A very uncommon title by America's most popular architect.   Wills, a New England-based post-war architect, was a champion of traditional design in residential architecture, in the face of  our obsession with the 1950s ranchhouse.  This is a very early post-War piece (1945), which shows Wills fine-tuning his small house options and veering away from the increasingly popular ranch house. (19632)    $50.00

The art of ironwork flourished in western Eurpoe during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Initially it was used primarily for purposes of protection: hinges, latches, grilles and locks, in addition to door pulls and knockers. Gothic art manifested itself in the elaborate foliate motifs to which wrought iron was particularly adaptable in the hands of the craftsman. The most outstanding examples of these works are frequently ecclesiastical. The plates reproduced in this volume are taken from "Serrurerie, ou les Ouvrages en Fer Forge du Moyen-Age et de la Renaissance," as published by Libraririe Tross, Paris, in 1870.
