Selected Titles for September 2022

What would a newsletter be without a weather report? Still hot, but we've had two showers, so I hope we'll be "weather-functional" by mid-September.

Not much to report on this month: I did take the old T-Bird to an event here in New England last Sunday. It was quite an interesting experience: it was indoors at the Shriners facility in the next town over (I've done book fairs there before). It featured about 150 cars, many of which were quite impressive (a $150K Lamborghini comes to mind!). You can see the 1959 convertible, with its top down and parked next to a 1955 Chevy Nomad, one of my personal favorites. I was flabbergasted when they called out our number 36, as the third best car of the event! The T-Bird gets all the credit; all I did was wash the windshield, and didn't bother to vacuum up the pine needles on the floor.

This newsletter has some nice new arrivals, including a pair of early (19th century) millwork catalogs. We had so much good luck last month with our "30 under $30" section that we expanded it to "40 under $40." There are some sleepers in the group of books, which come from some prominent libraries, so take a good look.

Happy browsing!

But most of all, his work is distinguished by his own imagination and honesty. A small house design won first prize in the Progressive Architecture competition in 1946. The Forgotten Art Of Building A Good Fireplace

The Forgotten Art Of Building A Good Fireplace: How to Alter Unsatisfactory Fireplaces & to Build New Ones in the 18th Century Fashion The Story of Count Rumford & His Fireplace Designs That Have Remained Unchanged Since 1795. Dublin, NH: Yankee, 1974. Paperback. Very Good, ex-library.

Most modern architects and masons do not know how to design or to build a fireplace in the 18th century manner that will always be a source of beauty and delight and never smoke ... if built right. Trouble is, most fireplaces built in American homes in the 20th century have been built wrong: they are low, squatty, unattractive boxes and they usually smoke. Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford, an American genius of equal stature in science and invention to Benjamin Franklin, established basic and immutable principles of fireplace design in 1795; these have remained unchanged and nearly unknown since that time. This book is the first separate book since 1906 on Rumford's fireplace design. The author sets forth in this volume the basic principles and, with drawings by Austin Stevens based on Rumford's work, he offers Rumford's designs for a new generation. This book can also be used to alter existing, bad fireplaces into good ones. (21429)   $15.00
