Welcome to late summer/early fall in New England! My favorite time of the year: the days are still warm but it's great sleeping weather. I can hardly keep up with my tomato and basil output.
The last few weeks have been very busy for me and my daughters. Our first photo features older daughter Stephanie and her husband Corbet (CJ) Walser, in Banff, where they attended a friend's wedding. CJ has an interesting job: after getting his undergraduate degree at Columbia University, he and Steph moved up to Boston during the pandemic years, and he finished a 2-year program at the North Bennet Street School, for preservation. With the training behind him, he took a Zoom interview with the director of Staten Island's Historic Richmond Town. She asked him, "Would you be able to work for a female boss?" to which he answered, "You've obviously never met my wife!" If you've never been to HRT, it's worth the visit: a Colonial Williamsburg-esque destination near New York City, where CJ is responsible for maintenance and preservation of over 40 historic buildings. Our second photo features me with younger daughter Kim, at the Boston Garden. I have been a big fan of women in sports, and I have been intrigued by the impact on the WNBA by the arrival of Caitlin Clark. So, I got two (expensive!) tickets her team, the Indiana Fever, play a game at the Garden against the Hartford women's team. Turns out, it was perhaps the last game of the season for Caitlin, whose team won, but she pulled up lame in the fourth quarter. I sent this shot to my buddy Clem Labine, with the title "almost courtside." Clem wrote me back saying, "It's a great father-daughter shot, and you can almost see the court from there!"

In early August, I took a trip once again to the Pacific Northwest, for a class reunion, and to visit old friends on the San Juan island of Guemes. I was joined by a friend from my high school exchange student days, Dr. Larry Falk, who is a retired emergency room surgeon. We met up near Bainbridge Island, where I grew up, in Puget Sound. He was traveling to British Columbia, for some fishing and river rafting, and brought along his sweet dog Sadie. He says "Nobody ever feeds Sadie!" From this shot, you can see that she can take care of herself.
This month's offerings have a broad array of titles, and two speciality areas: a very strong collection of period books on stair building and hand railing, and a few titles on a favorite topic: Maine.
Happy browsing!

Concrete Garages

Small quarto, pp. 48, illustrated with b/w photographs and architectural drawings. Staplebound Wraps. Very Good, some gutter damage on several pages.
With the advent of the automobile, there came a demand for a new class of building: the private garage. The necessary storage of oils, gasoline, and other combustible materials, makes the garage a veritable firetrap, unless a fireproof building is erected. Brick work and masonry were expensive, and concrete turned out to be the cheapest satisfactory fireproof building material. This pamphlet illustrated garages around the country, and explained how to construct them. A wonderful period piece, and scarce; currently the only copy available. (23307) $100.00

White Towers
Hirshorn, Paul and Steven Izenour

[Architectural History]. Hirshorn, Paul and Steven Izenour. White Towers. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1979. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 190, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.
Today's dominant fast-food franchises spend millions to persuade us that they do it all for us and that we can have it our way. White Tower, the pioneering hamburger chain founded in 1926, never felt the need for this kind of advertising. It depended on its instantly recognizable building to say it all - those gleamingly white ("clean"), well-lighted ("always open"), streamlined ("fast and efficient"), humanly scaled ("friendly") structures were three-dimensional billboards for themselves, capped by an actual white tower. The meticulously reproduced photographs in this book trace the evolution of this iconographic example of architectural symbolism. (23310) $60.00

Altturkische Keramik in Kleinasien und Konstantinopel
[Old Turkish Ceramics in Asia Minor and Constantinople]
Raymund, Alexander

[Ceramics]. Raymund, Alexander. Altturkische Keramik in Kleinasien und Konstantinopel [Old Turkish Ceramics in Asia Minor and Constantinople] with an introduction and explanatory descriptions by Karl Wulzinger. Munich: Bruckmann, 1922. Stated First Edition. Folio (14.5" x 19"), pp. 28 plus 40 full color plates. Text in German. Ex-library markings. Decorated Boards. Very Good.
In Turkish ceramic history, particularly prominent during the Ottoman era, Asia Minor and Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) played key roles. Iznik was the most important center for Ottoman ceramic production, especially for tiles. They were initially influenced by Chinese porcelain and Seljuk antecedents. Later, Iznik developed a distinct style, with the introduction of new colors like vibrant red and emerald green. Iznik tiles adorned numerous mosques and palaces throughout the Ottoman Empire. Kutahya developed its ceramic traditions alongside Iznik, and is known for its pottery. Constantinople, as the capital of the Ottoman Empire, was the primary customer for the ceramics produced in Iznik and Kutahya. This book's vivid plates illustrated some of the most popular designs of the era. (23320) $300.00

Picturesque Architecture in Paris, Ghent, Antwerp, Rouen, etc.
Drawn from Nature on Stone by Thomas Shotter Boys, 1839
Chancellor, E. Beresford [Introduction]

[International]. Chancellor, E. Beresford [Introduction]. Picturesque Architecture in Paris, Ghent, Antwerp, Rouen, etc. Drawn from Nature on Stone by Thomas Shotter Boys, 1839 A re-issue of the complete set of these exceedingly scarce and beautiful delineations of continental cities, printed in colours, with descriptive notes to each plate. London: The Architectural Press, 1928. Reissue of 1839 edition. Quarto, pp. 115, indexed, illustrated with full page lithographic color plates. Cloth over Boards. Very Good.
This book was the first serious challenge to the supremacy in England of the hand-coloured aquatint. The plates in this book were produced "entirely by means of lithography: they are printed with oil-colours, and come from the press precisely as they now appear." Thomas Shotter Boys fully explored the range of possibilities that the new technique offered: one subject is presented as if it were "a crayon sketch heightened with colour," others "a sepia drawing, with touches of colour .... a slight sketch in water-colours ... a finished water-colour ... an oil painting," etc. The republication of Boys' exquisite memorials of the streets and outstanding landmarks of these European cities creates extraordinarily vivid pictures of views lost and altered by time and urban progress. Adhocism: The Case for Improvisation
Jencks, Charles and Nathan Silver

[Design]. Jencks, Charles and Nathan Silver. Adhocism: The Case for Improvisation. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 2013. Expanded and updated edition. Small quarto, pp. 232, indexed, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Paperback. Very Good.
When this book first appeared in 1972, it was part of the spirit that would define a new architecture and design era - a new way of thinking ready to move beyond the purist doctrines and formal models of modernism. This book was a manifesto for a generation that took pleasure in doing things ad hoc, using materials at hand to solve real-world problems. The implications were subversive. Turned-off citizens of the 1970s immediately adopted the book as a DIY guide. The word "adhocism" entered the vocabulary, the concept of adhocism became part of the designer's toolkit, and the book became a cult classic. Now it is available again, with new texts by Jencks and Silver reflecting on the past forty years of adhocism and new illustrations demonstrating adhocism's continuing relevance. (23305) $45.00

Oblong small quarto, pp. 103, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Signed by the author on the title page. Paperback. Very Good.
Emma Sewall was an amateur in the very best sense of the word: a woman who photographed simply because she loved to. Taking pictures of country people working the land and sea, she recorded a way of life that was vanishing before the quickening pace of the Industrial Age. She took her strongest photographs of country people performing everyday tasks - a farmer collecting eggs in his hat, clam diggers in starched shirts and suspenders, children collecting firewood on the beach. She caught these people in the act of living and portrayed them as if they were royalty, ennobling them with a beautifully soft and subtle light that reflected an almost spiritual reverence for them. Her elegant platinum prints of rural Maine farmers won her recognition from Boston to Paris. The author is Emma's great-great-granddaughter. (23327) $30.00
