I am writing this on a rainy Sunday - eventful because we desperately need rain after a beautiful, warm summer. I'm watching my garden closely, hoping my three (!) cantaloupes will ripen before the cold weather arrives.
My college roommate has been out from Oregon for a few days, on the occasion of a birthday, but more importantly, to help me reclaim my basement. Mainly, we culled out 30-40 boxes of books from my earlier career as a German college professor. I'm taking a large load of German books to auction; they were once dear to my heart, but now are a millstone.
In the midst of culling out books, I ran into a sensational find: a photostat of a graphite portrait of me, done when I was a graduate student in Berlin in 1974, by a German expressionist artist I knew well, Conrad Felixmuller. Here I am pictured holding up my image from 1974 before a woodcut the artist did in the 1920s!
| | |
The woodcut depicts German writer Carl Sternheim, who is known for a couple of things: he was married to Pamela Wedekind, and he was the first collector in Germany of oil paintings by Van Gogh!
I was coming back from my workout at the gym two weeks ago, and a yellow jacket settled on my neck. When I brushed it away, the insect took exception and stung me. I didn't think much of it, until the next morning when I had a lump on my neck the size of a golf ball. I decided to go to the VA hospital to get some relief, and saw this sign in the lobby!
| | |
But, after applying a topical ointment, I needed to apply a cold compress to it, and all I had was one of the striper bass fillets (from last month's intro) and took a photo of it.
This month's "ominum gatherum" features a number of stained glass and related titles from Lance Kasparian's library. If you knew Lance from his park service days or as a stained glass artisan, please forward this newsletter to other colleagues who knew him.
We have a couple of uncommon Paul Williams titles to offer as well. He is being currently feted in three retrospectives in Southern California. Link: https://www.lacma.org/press/three-major-los-angeles-art-institutions-celebrate-paul-r-williams

Mural Painting - signed and notes by the author
Crowninshield, Frederic
| |
[Paint]. Crowninshield, Frederic. Mural Painting - signed and notes by the author. Boston, MA: Ticknor and Company, 1887. First edition. Octavo, pp. 155, illustrated with b/w plates and drawings. Signed by the author on the title page. Numerous marginialia throughout the book. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Mylar DJ.
Frederic Crowninshield (1845-1918) was an American artist and author. He graduated at Harvard College in 1866, and studied abroad 11 years; under Thomas Leeson Rowbotham in London, Thomas Couture in Italy, and Alexandre Cabanel in Paris. From 1879 to 1885 he taught at the Museum of Fine Arts School of Drawing and Painting when it was housed in the basement of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in Copley Square. He then moved to New York, where he was the first president of the National Society of Mural Painters a position that he held from 1895 to 1899, and president of the Fine Arts Federation from 1900 to 1909. In 1911 he was appointed director of the American Academy in Rome. This book was the definitive study on the subject for many years, and his murals and stained glass windows decorated churches and public buildings in New York, New England, and the Midwest. The notes he added to the endpapers and margins provide commentary and sources for formulas and techniques described in the book. A truly unique volume, what is presumably the author's own copy. Colonial Architecture (volumes I, III, IV)
Brockie & Hastings, Philadelphia, PA
| |
[Architectural Monograph]. Brockie & Hastings. Colonial Architecture (volumes I, III, IV). Philadelphia, PA: Brockie & Hastings, nd c. 1910. Original edition. Quarto, each volume pp. ~100, with each page displaying one b/w photograph measuring 7.5" x 9.5", with a unique four digit number written in one corner; some of the pages are bound in upside down, but the binding brads could be unscrewed to fix them. Volume IV has some purple ink damage on about four pages. Half-Leather Two-Stud Photograph Albums. Very Good.
University of Pennsylvania-trained Arthur H. Brockie and Harvard and Paris atelier-trained T. Mitchell Hastings established their partnership late in 1903. Their firm thrived on residences, banks, and hospitals, as well as on the Germantown connections which Arthur Brockie brought with him. Many of the buildings designed by Brockie & Hastings are examples of the taste in the Philadelphia area for a colonial Pennsylvania style, whether it is couched in the Pennsylvania farmhouse model or in a more high style Georgian or Federal revival. After T. Mitchell Hastings returned from World War I service, the firm dissolved. Hastings moved to California; but Brockie remained in Philadelphia, where he continued his emphasis on hospital and bank design, mixed with country residences. These albums showcased doorways, fireplace mantels, staircases, garden trellises, home exteriors, and much more ... even a few gravestones! Truly unique. (23954) SOLD

Répertoire de Couleurs
Dauthenay, Henri
| |
[Color]. Dauthenay, Henri. Répertoire de Couleurs to aid in the determination of the colors of flowers, foliages, and fruit. Paris: Société Française des Chrysanthémistes, 1905. Original edition. Small quarto, pp. 182, illustrated in color; plus two staplebound booklets laid in: one is an index of the colors (pp. 11), and the other is text that illuminates the plates (pp. 82). Text in French. Portfolio with three flaps, pages loose as issued. Very Good.
In the first color charts, colors came from nature. A color chart from the 13th century identified the various colors of urine to aid in diagnosis. By the Renaissance, color charts reflected art more than science, and were made for artists and paint colors. In the 17th century, naturalists created color charts for animal and bird colors. In 1899, Henry Dauthenay accepted an assignment to catalog all chrysanthemum colors, and this compilation was the result. A fascinating and rare color study. (23953) $120.00

These toys were manufactured in Germany in the early 20th century and were popular with children along with Lincoln Logs, TinkerToys, and other building sets created in the United States. A simple toy that inspired children to use their imaginations and create their own architectural masterpieces. A unique survivor. (23929) $50.00

This loving tribute and compendium of his work is presented by his granddaughter. We are offering this title in conjunction with three current exhibitions in Southern California. (23957) $100.00

[Glass]. Walker, Gay. Bonawit, Stained Glass & Yale: G. Owen Bonawit's Work at Yale University & Elsewhere. Wilsonville, OR: Wildwood Press, 2000. First edition. Quarto, pp. 42, illustrated in color. Perfect Bound. As New.
Sterling Memorial Library's exquisite stained-glass window decorations by G. Owen Bonawit feature prominently in this beautiful book. The author sets the windows in the broader context of Yale's architecture and of Bonawit's work, and her discussion of the selection, sources, and treatment of the window decorations gives fascinating insight into the genesis of the library's iconography as a whole. The production of Yale's stained-glass windows is best appreciated in the context of European tradition, which the author sketches from the middle ages to its revival in the 19th century. The book contains a review of Bonawit's life and work at Yale, and an appendix of some 52 locations, including 8 at Yale, of Bonawit windows. Splendid color illustrations adorn and illuminate the text. The author is a former Yale librarian. (23934) $75.00

A Hut of One's Own: Life Outside the Circle of Architecture
Cline, Ann
| |
[Architecture]. Cline, Ann. A Hut of One's Own: Life Outside the Circle of Architecture. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1997. Fourth printing. Octavo, pp. 153, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs and architectural drawings. Perfect Bound. Very Good.
This small book on small dwellings explores some of the largest questions that can be posed about architecture. What begins where architecture ends? What was before architecture? The ostensible subject of the author's inquiry is the primitive hut, a one-room structure built of common or rustic materials. Does the proliferation of these structures in recent times represent escapist architectural fantasy, or deeper cultural impulses? This book is an original and imaginative attempt to rethink architecture by studying its boundary conditions and formative structures; a great read. (23662) $25.00
