Network dentists use selective caries removal for deep carious lesions

To preserve hard tissue and avoid pulp damage, dentists can selectively remove tissue from deep carious lesions. The network queried the member dentists who provide restorative treatments to learn more about their management strategies for deep carious lesions in posterior permanent teeth in adults. The results from this cross-sectional study were recently published in JADA, and we interviewed Dr. M. Marianne Jurasic, the study principal investigator, for our blog.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are safe and effective for preventing dental caries. To develop theory-based interventions, more research is needed addressing dental provider attitudes related to dental caries prevention and arrest. We invite you to complete a Quick Poll about dental sealant use in your practice.

Answer Quick Poll

"If dentists realized how easy it is to be an investigator in this Post-Operative Pain study, they would jump on it."

“If dentists realized how easy it is to enroll and to be an investigator in this Post-Operative Pain study, they would jump on it. Plus, this study uses the FollowApp, I really like it. It was a pretty neat software that allowed patients to communicate with me without having to call the office. All the patient has to do is to respond to the survey via text message, and it comes to me. If it is something urgent, I would have my staff call and follow up with them. […] If you can get more people enrolled, I think they really would have a good time with it. It’s only 30 patients maximum. It is almost done before you start.”

Researcher Spotlight

Nicolaas Geurs, DDS, MS

UAB Department of Periodontology

Dr. Nico Geurs, the principal investigator for the dental implant restoration registry, was interviewed for the UAB News. “The knowledge gained from this registry will guide clinicians on what therapies are best for preventing dental implant complications and help improve treatment outcomes,” Geurs said.

“Patients will benefit from these findings, because the data will help us increase the success of dental implants, crowns and dentures and help us improve how we restore dental function and aesthetics, all while maintaining oral health for patients who have lost teeth.”
