Gail Atkins is on a workout streak!  She hasn't missed a day since April 17th of 2020, even with quarantine happening across our country.  Workouts have helped Gail lose weight, but they have also helped her anxiety tremendously.  We just shared her story in our weekly "60 Second Inspiration" spot on the WBKB 6pm news.  You can catch her replay here.

Braised Chicken and Mediterranean Vegetables Bowl
This meal is easy enough for a weeknight and could be adapted to the slow-cooker and is gluten free. Am I hitting any of your boxes? Best of all, it delivers a lot of lean protein and veggies without having to serve a cold salad. Autumn is here and sometimes you want to eat like it. Enjoy!
2 bone-in chicken breast, skin on (optional)
2 TBSP oil or butter 
16 oz. Baby Bella mushrooms, cleaned and sliced
10 oz. (approx.) sundried tomatoes, dehydrated
1 15 oz. canned artichoke hearts, drained
1 15 oz. Cannellini Beans, drained and rinsed
2 cups vegetable or chicken broth (low sodium)
½ cup sliced fresh basil
Salt and pepper for seasoning


Heat oven to 400 degrees. Trim extra fat and skin from the chicken breast, leaving a thin swath. Salt and pepper the chicken. In a large Dutch Oven, add 1 TBSP of oil and heat to medium high. Add the chicken to the pot, skin side down. Leave for 5 minutes without moving the meat. Flip with thongs and leave for one minute. Remove chicken to plate. Add the other tablespoon of oil or butter, mushrooms and sundried tomatoes. Reduce heat to medium and stir once a minute with thongs until the mushroom begins to release liquids. Add artichoke hearts, beans and deglaze pan with all the broth. Turn off heat, nestle chicken on top of the veggie mixture. Cover with lid and move to oven for 20 minutes or until an instant read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the chicken reads 165 degrees.
Warm up a couple wide rimmed bowls, plate half the veggies and chicken per bowl and sprinkle basil over the final dish. Serves two adults.

Fourteen years ago, when I opened the club, our mission was to create a happier and a healthier community.  In no other time has that been more important than now.  With our doors reopened, it has been wonderful to see our members coming back and new members joining us. We need to focus on health, connection and positivity. BAC is a great solution in your life.  It's happy, welcoming and safe. 

You'll see on our social media that we are featuring one member per day.  We are telling you who they are and why they joined.  We want you to know you belong here.  Whether you are a high school student or an athlete or a working parent or a retiree, you belong here. Whether you are in great shape or overweight or recovering from an injury, you belong here.

There are lots of different ways to be active at BAC, from our virtual classes to our live classes to our beautiful (clean and spaced out) traditional gym area.  Just look to some of our latest "60 Second Inspiration" stories.  Gail Atkins has used both virtual and live workouts.  She has stayed in great shape during quarantine and has not missed a workout since mid-April.  Kim Schultz has stayed active at BAC through all phases of her life from being a new mom to a working mom to raising teenagers.  She relieves stress and continues to feel strong and young because largely because of her time at BAC.

TIPS FROM NUTRITION EDUCATOR AMANDA FREELAND
Creating and keeping a routine with your nutrition is important for lasting success with your overall wellness.
I'm not a routine person in all areas of life, but I have found a ton of value in creating routines around my nutrition that work really well for me and my family. A routine doesn't have to be super strict or the same exact thing everyday, but the routine you create should help alleviate stress from your day. When we don't have to make so many decisions regarding our food intake, we are more likely to choose healthy because we won't feel so overwhelmed. Routines help improve our mental health and help lower stress, allowing us more time in our day to focus on other tasks or other priorities. The positive cycle continues with better sleep due to improved nutrition and an increased feeling of control over your day which leads to even more great choices.

Here is a sample of a routine for a healthy day:
Wake: Drink 16-20oz of water (then coffee or tea etc.)
Breakfast: Healthy carbohydrate option and a protein
Water
Lunch: Healthy carbohydrate, veggie and protein
Water
Snack (optional): Veggie or fruit and water 
Dinner: Veggies most and a protein
Dinner and done (try not to eat after dinner)
Water
Let's talk weekends and treats:
Saturdays: Meal plan-figure out what you want to have the following week and what food you would need for those meals.
Sundays: Shop and/or prep for those meals
Treats: Plan for 1-2 treats in your week. Don't leave them to chance or let your cravings get the best of you.

Whatever routine works best for you, try to include your whole family. Maybe immediately after dinner you pack lunches with your family for the next day, maybe each member of the family gets to choose one of the dinners for the following week, maybe one Friday each month is 'fun Friday' where you have pizza or take-out that day. Nutrition can and should be fun and simple while still staying in a healthy routine most of the time.

YOGA ON THE BEACH
Join instructor Cheryl Mack on Saturday, September 12th at 8:30 am at Thomson Beach for this unique and relaxing Yoga workout.  Bring your own towel or mat.  Meet at Bay Urban if it rains that day.  This class is a BONUS to our BAC members and $10 for guests.

POUND PARTY
Ami Lenning is excited to host a Pound Party on Friday, September 18th at Bay Urban Fitness.  This is a BONUS to our BAC members and $10 for guests.  Pound is a choreographed, cardio-based class with strength intervals set to the beat of the music using drumsticks.  It is a great workout that feels like a party!
