Lake Brantley Teacher Joins Prestigious Fellowship
Lauren D'Ambrosio, AP Teacher at Lake Brantley High School was selected for the Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship by the National Geographic Society and Lindblad Expeditions. As part of this fellowship, she had the incredible opportunity to travel to Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands this past November.
Ms. D'Ambrosio was selected for the fellowship along with 50 other educators who have the professional development opportunity of a lifetime - exploring remote places of the world alongside an expedition team composed of biologists, geologists, historians, scientists, undersea specialists, and National Geographic photographers. Upon return, each fellow will work to incorporate what they experienced and learned into their classrooms and communities, ultimately building geographic awareness and developing an explorer mindset.
She is currently working on several classroom deliverables but have started creating virtual reality field trips for her students using 360 video footage she gathered while on the expedition. This footage will be paired with her very own narration of biological and ecological concepts to help students access the sights and sounds of these places, while understanding and engaging with the content. From there, her students will create their own VR field trip in a STEAM lesson, using and reviewing ideas from throughout the year and getting to teach, share and learn with their peers.

Sanford Middle School Student Gives Senior Citizens a Sweet Valentine's Surprise
Story by Tony Atkins, WESH 2 News
Tuesday saw a special Valentine’s Day for some of Central Florida's oldest residents.
A sixth-grade student from Sanford Middle School handed out hand-written cards to people living at Central Florida senior living facilities.
Kyla Fletcher, 11, had a little help from friends and family. She handed out cards to people at Vitality Living in Lake Forest, a senior living facility in Sanford.
“For this, I decided to make Valentine’s cards for people at the elderly home, who don’t really have loved ones close,” Fletcher said. The residents were all thrilled at the kind gesture.
Vitality Living’s executive director said the simple act sent a significant message to the seniors. “I think it gives them the opportunity to know that they’re loved. Not just by us at Vitality Living in Lake Forest, but they’re loved in the community,” said Rob Beckman.
That was Kyla’s goal, spending 20 hours creating all the cards. It was a long-term plan to put smiles on faces on a special day. “I knew Valentine’s Day was coming up, and I just wanted to make people feel good,” Fletcher said.
