What's Cool in Our Schools

South Seminole Academy's Girls in Government Event

South Seminole Academy (SSA) partnered with the League of Women Voters Organization for their annual 'Girls in Government' event. SSA is a magnet school with a focus on leadership, law and advanced studies. The students were hand-selected by their teachers to attend this event based on their strong interest in pursuing government careers. Students engaged in conversations about women's right to vote, asked thought provoking questions about the voting process, and had the opportunity to have conversations with guests from the League of Women Voters and SCPS School Board Members, along with Florida Representatives Anna Eskamani and Rachel Plakon. Both speakers shared their empowering stories and information about their responsibilities as women working in the government.

Representative Eskamani, member of the Florida House of Representatives from the 42nd district discussed her upbringing as a Florida native from a culturally diverse background. She encouraged the young women by stating, "Always lead with grace, grit, but don't forget who you are. Be yourself. Don't try to fit in a box and be someone you're not. That's the strongest you that you could be. Anything is possible, if someone like me can do this, you can too!"

Representative Plakon who currently serving for the 36th district added that her challenge was having a child during her primary, but her dreams of working in government did not stop! She encourages women to never stop chasing their dreams, and to be an advocate. "Don't put your dreams hold because tough times will not last forever. Women have inner grit. I encourage you to keep on doing the right thing, like what you see in the mirror, and believe in yourself."

Dr. Lynnette Gonzalez, Instructional Coach and Magnet Facilitator who helped to organize and lead this event said, "I hope the students see themselves represented with the leaders here today and hope this can empower them to reach their goals and understand there is a need for women to speak out and be part of the decision-making process in this country. I hope they leave this event inspired and ready to lead!"

Millennium Middle School Students Experience Life as a Flight Attendant

Students in the Career and Technology class offered at Millennium Middle School had the opportunity to experience life as a Spirit Airline flight attendant with Ms. Julie Bell and Ms. Lisa Tevin. Students were virtually welcomed aboard Flight 0182 with Ms. Bell and Ms. Tevin, departing from Orlando to Puerto Rico. They learned about transportation, distribution, and logistics careers from an airline perspective. Students volunteered to pass out “airline snacks” while others followed picking up “items to discard.”

Thank you to Spirit Airline's Ms. Bell and Ms. Tevin for sharing their career experiences with our students and getting them excited about a possible future as a flight attendant!

Winter Springs High School Culinary Team

Winter Springs High School's Culinary Team helped kick off our first SCPS Community Ambassador Program meeting by catering some of their delicious appetizers!

This team will be competing in March for the National ProStart Invitational, a culinary competition where students can win educational scholarships to further the careers of young chefs. They are entering with their Bruschetta dish which they featured at the Community Ambassador Program meeting.

Their passion is what Chef Adam is most proud of. "I'll take their passion over talent anytime!"

Best of luck to the Winter Springs High School Culinary Team at ProStart competition in March and thank you for providing delicious bites to kick off this year's Community Ambassador Program!

Principals and Presidents Meeting with SCCPTA

This week, Seminole County Public Schools hosted our County Council PTA members including presidents of each school's PTA or their designee.

They shared information with SCPS leadership and had a chance to have breakfast with their principals and discuss new ideas and current projects. We are so thankful for all of the support our incredible PTA members provide to our schools, students and staff.

We also learned that community members are welcome to join the SCCPTA - it's not just for parents! So, if you're looking for a way to connect with others who are passionate about advocating for children, you can learn more by clicking HERE.

As a bonus, they shared with us that one of our own principals, Mr. Howard was named Florida Outstanding Administrator of the Year by the State PTA Association at their annual conference. Congratulations to Mr. Howard and his team!
