Wesh 2 News Visits Markham Woods Middle School's Biomechatronics Program

Today, WESH 2 News Reporter Dave McDaniel visited Markham Woods Middle School to discuss their Bio-mechatronics program and even interviewed some students! This program of exploration is the marriage of machine and body.

Bio-mechatronics is an interdisciplinary field that integrates the human body with electronics, engineering, robotics, and neuroscience. Students had the wonderful opportunity to even hear from Jessica Loomis, a substitute teacher at Markham Woods Middle School, who shared her incredible story on having a cranial implant of a prosthetic skull following a brain tumor removal.

In the culminating course of the Markham Woods' Bio-mechatronics program, students complete a capstone project where they are presented with a scenario containing a major medical event with a diagnosis provided.

Students must collaboratively develop solutions to the problem using the skills of 3-D printing, programming, and robotics to assist in the construction of a prototype. This prototype may include a prosthetic or possibly even an organ for the patient.

The capstone this year focuses on a patient who is suffering from migraines among other symptoms. Students will apply problem-solving techniques and design theory based on the information they learned from Ms. Loomis' presentation.

In the Spotlight

Lake Howell High School's Mr. Amos Privette

Last week, you read about Lake Howell High School's Mock Trial Team winning the "showdown." This week, we wanted to share a bit more about Mr. Privette who led this team.

For the two years of attending this competition, other team coaches have stated over and over, that it is impossible to do well in these competitions unless a dedicated attorney also works with the team. Our team had a volunteer attorney coach for 6 months last year, and he was very helpful, but he was not able to keep helping this year.

Lake Howell High School's Law Club did it alone! Their coach, Mr. Amos Privette, is the high school English teacher, a 20-something-year-old man with no prior experience in law. For weeks after school, they prepared by analyzing case packets, reading affidavits, memorizing rules of evidence, and perfecting their performance - including Mr. Privette who tirelessly studied, learned, and worked countless hours after school to increase his own understanding of the law so that he can coach his team to success.

Mr. Privette not only prepared one team, but two! Two teams of 7 students each, to ensure that every student got the most trial time possible learning different roles and gaining the most experience.

After four rounds each of presenting their cases against opposing teams from other schools - (teams who all had attorney coaches, including a federal prosecutor), this English teacher coach led his teams to victory - with one team taking 3rd place and one team taking 1st place in the entire state, and with a total of seven individual awards for best attorney or best witness given to his students - more than any other high school in the state.

A huge thank you to Mr. Amos Privette and his amazing dedication to student's education and their future goals!
