What's Cool in Our Schools

Hamilton Students Have a Blast Making Rockets

This week, Hamilton Elementary SECME students enjoyed their official "launch day." Students used their math, science and engineering skills to design, build, and test their water bottle rockets!

Now this is what we call high-level learning! We'll have to see who got their rocket to go the highest! Just another example of why we're known as #STEMinole County.

Rock Lake Middle School Students Take a Stand Against Tabacco

Rock Lake Middle School has been partnering with S.W.A.T Florida (Students Working Against Tobacco) for the past three years to provide education to our students and the community about the hazards of tobacco products.

Each year, the Leadership, Speech & Debate, and Beta Club students create educational projects that are displayed around the school.

Their most recent project will be on display during the month of October for "Not a Lab Rat" Day which is designed to educate students about the hazards of vaping.

I Spy Fun at Lake Mary Elementary

Lake Mary Elementary 4th grade students became spies for the day to solve challenges and get clues to solve our big mysteries!

In reading, the suspects were "11 high school students who came for tutoring after school". One of these students took a special item from the classroom. Students worked together to read passages and answer questions that aligned with our BEST standards: theme, context clues, figurative language, perspective, plot, and character development. After each correct task, students were given a clue that helped them eliminate suspects and lead them to the culprit.

In math, students worked to find the culprit of a recent silly crime. They had to correctly answer multiplication problems that aligned with the BEST standards. After correctly completing tasks, clues revealed attributes of the prime suspect. Their final clue helped them determine who was responsible for the crime. All in all, students worked collaboratively in heterogenous groups using accountable talk and problem-solving skills to review standards in a fun and engaging way!

Milwee Students Excel at Leadership Conference

The Milwee Middle School Technology Student Association (TSA) recently took part in the FLTSA Leadership Conference, which has the primary goal of providing student leaders with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively manage a successful TSA chapter. During the event, students had the opportunity to engage with peers from all across the state, fostering valuable connections.

Milwee TSA members actively participated in a variety of training sessions, engaged in problem-solving activities, and even partook in fun events such as the Tri-Wizard Tournament and Diagon Alley. Notably, the Milwee TSA team excelled by winning the costume contest and having several members on the triumphant Tri-Wizard tournament team, as well as being recognized as some of the most spirited participants. As the team looks ahead, they are diligently preparing for the upcoming Regional Competition in December and the State Competition scheduled for February.

Bentley Elementary Goes Batty

On October 31st, Bentely Elementary School hosted their very first "Bentley Goes Batty" event. The entire school transformed into a bat cave with the focus on helping elementary students apply their critical thinking skills from STEM and ELA activities to solve clues about various bats from all over the world. This creative and interactive school project was so popular, you can expect to read about it in the local newspapers. Way to go, Bentley!
