What's Cool in Our Schools

Seminole High Students Prepare to "Rome" the Streets of Italy

Directed by PL Malcolm and Kenneth Hargett, The Pride of the Tribe represents the collaborative bands and color guard program at Seminole High School. This year, just shy of 200 students are actively involved making it one of the largest in Seminole County.

At the end of December, approximately 100 students and accompanying chaperones from The Pride of the Tribe will embark on a journey to Italy, where they have the privilege to represent Seminole County and march in the New Year's Day Parade in historic Rome. Way to go, Noles!

Heimlich Maneuver Introduced at Eastbrook Elementary School

Students at Eastbrook Elementary learned about the Heimlich maneuver, a crucial technique for aiding individuals in choking emergencies. This session was led by registered nurses Suzanne Leibuchler RN-CPEN, and Kristi Boone RN, who not only demonstrated the correct procedures, but also explained the essential steps for administering the Heimlich Maneuver when someone is choking.

This educational initiative reflects our steadfast dedication to equipping SCPS students with life-saving skills, reinforcing our commitment to their safety and well-being.

Beyond the practicality of these skills, this lesson also instills a sense of community and responsibility to emphasize the importance of looking out for one another.

Learning is Electric at Forest City Elementary

Students in Mrs. Acker’s class at Forest City Elementary School practiced building circuits. They were asked “What If” when using objects around the room to decide if they are conductors or insulators!

Hands-on learning sparks the creativity and fuels the love of learning. Way to go Owls!

Casselberry Elementary Students are Serious About Cereal

Casselberry Elementary's wellness committee came up with a challenge for the staff and students to donate cereal and give back to families in need.

What began as a modest idea has evolved into something far bigger than initially envisioned. Their goal was to collect 700 boxes, donate them back to families in need, and give to Second Harvest Food Bank.

They now have over 1,300 boxes of cereal and are anticipating up to 1,800 boxes. After the Thanksgiving break, the Pandas will conduct the domino run with the cereal boxes they have collected. This is now being talked about with other charitable organizations that they will be able to help other food pantries as well!

Way to go, Pandas!

The Adventures of Flat Serita Continue

Altamonte Elementary hosted its annual Trunk-or-Treat Event on Thursday, October 26th. Among all the goblins, ghosts, superheroes, and princesses, they also had an appearance from “Flat Serita!"

Throughout the evening, Flat Serita was able to visit a variety of different worlds created by school volunteers. She strolled through Mario’s World, trekked through Jurassic Park, and even ended up in Candy Land. She took many photographs with our students along the way and even enjoyed a treat from Kona Ice!

A great time was had by all, and we are so glad Flat Serita got to be a part of it!

Milwee Pre-Engineering Magnet Students Sweep UCF's Water Tower Competition!

Milwee Middle School Pre-Engineering Magnet Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering (SECME) students competed at the American Water Works Association (AWWA) Water Tower Competition at University of Central Florida. SECME is an alliance of K-12 educators, universities, parents, and industry/government partners committed to engaging and preparing more minorities and girls for college and careers in STEM.

The Florida Section of AWWA sponsored the tenth annual Model Water Tower Competition which provides students with a fun-filled, science-oriented competition aimed at introducing middle and high school students to opportunities in the water profession.

The objective of the competition is to make participants aware of the importance of reliable drinking water and the rewarding opportunities available in the water profession. The competition meets this objective by having students develop an idea into a functioning water tower, just like what water professionals do in the real world. Prizes are awarded to the top three finishers in the middle school and high school categories. The models are judged based on 4 categories including: cost efficiency, hydraulic efficiency, structural efficiency, and design/materials ingenuity.
