Rainbow Elementary Class Gets a BIG Surprise
On Patriots Day, Mrs. Haaland's class wrote letters to our local firefighters to thank them for their hard work and for being heroes. To the delight and surprise of our students, they received a special "thank you" of their own with hats and stickers for their kindness.

Lyman High Students are Making Global Connections
This year, Lyman High School has partnered with Kizuna Across Culture (KAC) for a unique learning experience for students at Lyman and in Japan. This program pairs 2nd and 3rd year students with English classrooms in Goto Nagasaki-ken, Japan! Mrs. Barbara Ihns led her class through Omiyage (Souvenir) Exchange, a cultural gift exchange where both American and Japanese students create curated cards and even pack some gifts for each other!
"What I love most about this program is that it has allowed my students the opportunity to meet other students from a different country and develop a real connection, a found commonality, and share mutual interests!" said Mrs. Ihns. This exchange allows both American and Japanese cultures to celebrate their differences while allowing the opportunity for them to learn more about each other!
| |
Mrs. Ihns continues, "From my perspective, they are learning two things first and foremost: that they don't have to be 'perfect' in their language in order to communicate. They already know that Japanese is one of the most difficult languages to learn, but as they see their counterparts make mistakes in English, they realize errors don't really matter- they get it. Also, I think all the students come to understand how we are all more alike than different."
Author Nancy Springer Visits Oviedo High School's Book Club
Oviedo High School's Book Club had the awesome privilege of famed author and writer of Enola Holmes, Nancy Springer who visited their book club. Springer participated in group discussion, and she even autographed their books! Our students were incredibly inspired and appreciative of this unique experience.

Lake Howell High School's Law Club Takes the State Title
The Sunshine State Showdown is a state mock trial competition hosted by Florida State University’s Law Program. Among the most competitive mock trial competitions, schools drive and even fly in from all around Florida to compete every Fall. Annually, this event hosts between 16 to 20 teams with the majority being private schools. Lake Howell went head-to-head with the back-to-back state champions, American Heritage, who have a long history in Florida Mock Trial with their pre-law program. Lake Howell High School's Law Club not only beat them 2-0, but placed first and third overall in the state, while also taking home seven individual Best Attorney/Witness awards!
"Honestly, I could not be more impressed with their work. Even throughout the weekend, when at times they thought they were losing rounds, the students kept saying “keep moving forward”. It really did feel like we beat all the odds at this competition." said Mr. Amos Privette, Lake Howell High School's Mock Court Coach.

SCPS Receives CPR Donation from DUDA
Did you know it is a state requirement for all 9th and 11th graders to have CPR training? Hagerty, Oviedo, Lake Howell, and Winter Springs High Schools will each receive one CPR learning kit donation from DUDA. Thank you to the DUDA Family for their generosity and helping our SCPS students with life-saving CPR training.
"Sharing our blessings is a cornerstone of DUDA’s business practices. We share 10% of our annual, after-tax earnings with the Duda family’s three charitable foundations. With the business’s portion, we seek to support local organizations and institutions that serve the communities where DUDA operates. Our giving is focused on faith-based institutions, conservation efforts, educational institutions, children and youth programs, various industry relations organizations, and healthy living initiatives. We were blessed to be able to give back generously to our communities this year, and as part of this, we were able to partner with the American Heart Association to give one CPR kit per high school in the areas where we operate in Florida and California. In total, 14 CPR kits will be donated to provide life-saving educational opportunities." - Cathleen Conley, Manger.
