Hamilton Elementary Odyssey of the Mind Teams Make a Statement at the World Finals
Odyssey of the Mind is an international competition that challenges students to solve complex problems using creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Teams prepare original performances that must meet specific criteria while incorporating imaginative solutions and firsthand building components.
We are so proud of the Odyssey of the Mind teams from Hamilton Elementary, who had an amazing experience at the World Finals. These teams worked incredibly hard to fundraise and make their way to this competition, and they showed up ready to win big.
Two of their teams came home in the top ten teams, and the 5th graders took home 3rd place in the whole WORLD!! These problem solvers can do anything they put their minds to!
We love hearing the stories about the community support and all of the people, organizations, and businesses who helped these teams be able to travel to the world competition. Special thanks to the Midway Coalition
Sanford County Commission, projectsanford, Texas Roadhouse, and Hollerbach's German Restaurant.

Oviedo High Students Attend 2025 International Science and Engineering Fair in Ohio
Three Oviedo High students were selected to represent SCPS at the 2025 International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Columbus, Ohio.
ISEF is the world's largest international STEM research competition for high school students. This year, our three nominees represented three of the 1700 participants from the 66 countries, regions, and territories represented across the globe. Those 1700 students compete for nearly $9 million in awards and prizes, including the top prize of $100,000. Those 1700 students are divided across 22 scientific disciplines and categories, whereby they compete for awards in those categories and the coveted distinction of being best-in-fair. Alumni of this competition have gone on winning Nobel Prizes, MacArthur Fellowships, National Medals of Science, and contributed to significant advancements in science.
The three students who represented SCPS this year are Angela Calvo-Chumbimuni (sophomore), Moitri Santra (junior), and Audrey Choate (senior). Each of these students attends the research program at Oviedo High School, taught by Mr. William Furiosi. Of our three competitors, two of them came away with prizes. Moitri Santra won 2nd Place Serving Society through Science Award and 2nd Place in Plant Sciences. Angela Calvo-Chumbimuni won 3rd Place in Biochemistry. In total, the two won over $4,000 in cash prizes.
Mr. Furiosi has attended ISEF eight times and has sponsored students from Oviedo High School for the Seminole County Regional Science, Math, and Engineering Fair for the past eight years. When asked about why he continues to attend the ISEF conference, he stated "Competing at ISEF is truly a life-changing experience. There is simply nothing that compares to the level of intellect, camaraderie, mutual ambition, friendship, and innovation that this event offers. It's my aspiration that we continue to grow our research offerings in SCPS so that we can extend this opportunity to even more students since the talent and ability we have in Seminole County is incredible." His commitment to mentoring young scientists and his impact on the STEM community make him an asset to SCPS.
Mr. Furiosi presented a symposium session titled "How to Harness the Art of Presenting" at this year's ISEF event. His session was one of the most highly attended throughout the week, drawing enthusiastic participation from both adults and students. This session aimed to illustrate how students, teachers, and fair directors can better understand and harness the art of presenting to find better success in research competitions. After his influential symposium session, Mr. Furiosi was invited to collaborate with delegations from Puerto Rico and Tunisia to help grow and improve their programs.
Congratulations to Angela, Moitri, Audrey, and Mr. Furiosi, on your innovative minds, outstanding contribution, and positive impact. Oh, the places you will go!
| | At SCPS, we are dedicated to celebrating our schools and the exceptional leaders who guide them. | | Principal Nancy Urban - English Estates Elementary | | |
Principal Nancy Urban has been an SCPS educator for 32 years, and a principal for 12 years. She currently serves at English Estates Elementary School.
A surprising fact about Principal Urban, she is a product of Seminole County Schools! She attended English Estates Elementary, South Seminole Middle School, and Lyman High School, class of 1988! Principal Urban's story is particularly unique because, she is currently the principal where she and her daugher both attended elementary school.
When asked about her favorite part of being a principal, she replied, “One of the most special things about being the principal at English Estates, where I attended as a student is the deep personal connection to the school’s history and community. It’s incredibly rewarding to give back to a place that helped shape my own educational journey. Every hallway, classroom, and playground holds memories, and now I’m in a position to create those same meaningful experiences for a new generation of students!"
Thank you, Principal Urban, for continuing to give back to our district. We are overjoyed to have you apart of our SCPS family. As Principal Urban says "Once a Roadrunner, always a Roadrunner!"
