What's Cool in Our Schools

Lawton Students Explore the Mysteries of Magnets

Students in Mrs. Dopp’s 4th-grade class at Lawton Elementary became scientists who were given a mission to uncover the mysteries of magnets. In this hands-on activity, our young scientists explored the power of attraction with a magnetic inquiry lab. Learning comes to life when students get hands-on with concepts!

Lyman High Hosts Special Guests on Tour of Engineering and CTE Opportunities

This week, Lyman High hosted members from Project Lead the Way (PLTW), and guests from Burns and McDonnell which provides engineering, architecture, construction, environmental and consulting solutions.

As a PLTW way distinguished school for many years now, it was exciting to show case the curriculum and abundant opportunities as well as the collaboration between the engineering students and students participating in the variety of career and technical education courses.

"PLTW provides a strong foundation for further STEM learning in high school and beyond, challenging students to solve real-world problems and develop essential skills for career and future-readiness," said Dr. David Dimmett, PLTW President and CEO. "We are very proud of the work at Lyman High School and The Academy of Engineering. Local partnerships like the one with Burns & McDonnell are also making a positive difference in the lives of Lyman students by giving them access to high-quality STEM and engineering curricula while preparing them for future careers."

Guests witnessed students working on projects in civil engineering and architecture, simulated welding labs, automotive, aerospace, HVAC, and mechanical engineering courses. We love welcoming business partners and community members onto our campus to see all of the incredible opportunities available for Seminole County Public School students as well as encouraging those strong connections. Community and business support is vital to creating schools that allow for our students to be future-ready whether they are seeking higher education, employment, or enlistment.

Idyllwilde Elementary

Math class for 2nd grade students at Idyllwilde Elementary just went to a whole new level! This week, students used play dough to build arrays, turning numbers into colorful creations! The students rolled, shaped, and poked their dough into rows and columns, making math hands-on and engaging. It’s amazing to see how something as simple as play dough can bring learning to life! We love these colorful, creative ways our teachers help students make lessons memorable.

The Physics Fleet is Hitting the Road

5th grade students at Hamilton Elementary enjoyed a lesson from Optics Bus!

They learned about why we see color, concave and convex lenses, how sound travels, and what sound looks like! We love having a fleet of physics buses so our elementary students

Ali's Hope Foundation Gifts $80,000 to Benefit Student Mental Health and Resources

This week, we celebrated a very special donation with a check presentation from Ali's Hope Foundation to Seminole County Public Schools, which will provide a full-time social worker to serve in the student lounge at both Lake Mary and Winter Springs High.

We heard from students about the positive impact of their student lounge and the importance of having access to mental health resources and someone to talk to.

This is another perfect illustration of the importance of having community support for our schools. It takes all of us investing in our schools and supporting our students.

SCPS Names Wellness Champion of the Year

Each SCPS location has an onsite Wellness Champion who promotes employee well-being and is the liaison to the Benefits and Wellness department.

At the end of each school year online nominations go live for employees to express their appreciation for their Wellness Champion. Winners are chosen by a panel of judges.

This year, we congratulate Dimitrios Delazanos, aka "Coach D" from Seminole County Virtual School on being named the SCPS Wellness Champion of the Year!

Coach D always finds unique and engaging wellness activities for his staff like bioluminescent kayaking, scavenger hunts at the zoo and more. Coach D is an incredible role model and cheerleader to all! We are so proud of you!

Idyllwilde Elementary Student Leads Campus Initiative

At Idyllwilde, students are encouraged to take the lead when they see a potential issue. Stella noticed that there was no trash can on one of their playgrounds and was worried that people would throw trash on the ground.

She wrote a letter to Principal Logsdon outlining the problem and outlined a plan to fix it! Stella was so passionate about keeping our playground free of trash that the school gladly granted her request! Today Stella got to pick the placement of the new playground trash can.
