What's Cool in Our Schools

Markham Woods Middle School Students Learn Life Lessons from the Classroom

At Markham Woods Middle School, the Game of Life students worked through the details of a roommate agreement to determine who would be responsible for the different living expenses.

They also had to do some number crunching to make sure they stayed within their budget. Lessons like these help students prepare for real-world situations.

Lake Mary Elementary Gets Creative with Camping

4th-grade students at Lake Mary Elementary went camping while reviewing for the upcoming BEST Writing Test and Math Test.

The students hiked their way through an argumentative essay and gathered by the campfire to practice standard-based math questions. The 4th-grade teachers can’t wait to make s’more great memories the rest of the year!

Volunteers Needed for Financial Literacy Program - Living on My Own

Living on My Own, a financial literacy program, is a hands-on, real-life simulation that gives middle and high school students the opportunity to experience their futures in a fun and exciting way. They are encouraged to make healthy and wise lifestyle choices similar to those adults face on a daily basis.

During each 90-minute session, students are assigned jobs or careers and family situations. They will then make a transaction at 10 storefronts in the "city," including transportation, housing, groceries, and more. Students will consider lifestyle choices that adults face daily as they manage a monthly income and their bank account.

Please consider volunteering for a session of "Living on My Own"! Volunteers are at each "storefront" in the city, which represents real-life businesses. Information and instructions are located at each station. On the day of the event, there will be a quick volunteer training and overview of the program.

On April 3, an evening reception was held to recognize these students and provide them with a certificate. With a large crowd in attendance, the students were able meet with the guests, discuss their artwork and explain their inspiration. This was a great opportunity to get a glimpse inside the minds of these very creative students.

The event also provided an opportunity to recognize Tess Vallone, art teacher at Lyman High School, for her many years of dedicated service to the art program. Tess will be retiring at the end of this school year.

Special thanks to Seminole State College for hosting the event.
