What's Cool in Our Schools

Lyman High Celebrates 100 Years

Lyman High hosted the Spectrum News 13 morning show on the first day of school along with the ringing of the historic SCPS school bell to open the 24/25 school year.

It was wonderful to have our school board members, city commissioners, and the Mayor of Longwood on campus to celebrate this milestone.

Another exciting change for Lyman High that students will experience is the opening of their new campus restaurant experience called "The Finish Line." This renovation took place over the summer and students and staff alike were in awe of the incredible new space.

SCPS Celebrates the Renovation of the Health Career Academy at Seminole High with Ribbon Cutting

Seminole County Public Schools was thrilled to officially cut the ribbon for the newly renovated Health Academy at Seminole High School, marking the completion of the first phase of an extensive, nearly $3 million renovation project. The much-anticipated improvements were made possible thanks to a legislative appropriation championed by Senator Jason Brodeur, Representative David Smith, and Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy, as well as grants and donations by generous healthcare partners and community members.

The Health Academy now boasts state-of-the-art facilities and technology to enhance the learning experience for students pursuing careers in the health sciences. The renovations include modernized classrooms, advanced simulation labs, and updated technology, all designed to provide students with the hands-on experience and training needed to excel in the rapidly evolving healthcare industry.

The renovation project underscores the district's commitment to providing its students with high-quality, relevant educational opportunities. The first phase of renovations at Seminole High School's Health Academy is just the beginning, with further enhancements including a "sim rig" which will have the back of an ambulance embedded into a classroom planned as part of the overall three million investment. These improvements will continue to elevate the educational experience at Seminole High School, ensuring its students are well-prepared for the demands of the healthcare sector.

Safety and Security Annual Letter for Families

We are excited to welcome you back for the 2024-2025 school year! We are looking forward to a safe year and want you to know that your child’s safety and security has been and will always be our number one priority.

Everyone needs to play an active role in school safety. Students, staff and community members are encouraged to be observant and report any suspicious activity or concerning behavior. There are several ways to report this information including directly to law enforcement or using the Speakout/P3 anonymous tip line. Remember, if you See Something, Say Something, Do Something.

The District utilizes a multi-layered approach to school safety including at least one School Resource Officer on each campus, physical security (locked doors, fencing, cameras, etc.), visitor screening, an all-hazard approach to emergency response and comprehensive training for all school staff. We also support fostering a positive school culture and climate.

School emergency response drills are completed regularly as required by statute on every school campus to prepare for all emergencies. In Seminole County, we practice scenario-based drills that are age and developmentally appropriate. The purpose of these drills is to help children feel safe at school and teach them how to respond in an emergency.

If an emergency does occur, the District will provide communication in a timely and consistent manner with updates as the situation evolves. Please refer to your school’s social media pages and the district website in addition to the email communications that will be sent. Please remember, unless directed to do so, DO NOT come to the campus during a critical incident. You will be provided with information on how, when and where to pick up your child.

As a parent, you are an important part of school safety too. Reassure your child that they are safe. Make time to speak with your children and let them talk to you about their feelings. Review safety procedures and ask them about their drills after they are conducted. Remind your child that if they have any information on a potentially dangerous situation, to report it. Encourage them to be an Upstander, not a Bystander. If a fight occurs on campus, teach them that it is important for them to seek help and not video tape the incident.

Social media is a part of so many of our lives. It is important to have conversations with your child on good digital citizenship and a reminder that what they post can have consequences. It is important that they report any concerning posts to administrators or law enforcement instead of spreading rumors. Please refrain from posting campus safety issues or shortcomings on social media. This activity has the potential of placing our children and staff at unnecessary risk. Instead, please report these and any school safety comments or concerns to school_safety@scps.k12.fl.us.

We wish you a safe and healthy school year!

Elementary Bus Rider Information

Dear Elementary Bus Rider Families,

We have exciting news to share with you! Our district is rolling out a new bus ridership software, Traversa, to improve student safety and increase system efficiency for the 2024-2025 school year.

This new system features a tablet on each bus and students will simply tap their card when they board the bus and tap it again when they depart at their stop. The schools will have the cards to distribute to elementary bus riders on Monday, August 19th. Each elementary bus rider will begin using their card daily to tap on and off the bus starting the afternoon of August 19th.

Each year, inevitably, students perhaps miss the bus or get off at the wrong stop. These types of incidents cause alarm for parents and staff as we use radios, phone calls, and emails to learn if the student boarded the bus that morning and where they got off the bus.

The cards do not have any tracking capabilities themselves; they only serve to record who and where students board and disembark.

We are thankful for all of the ways that not only school safety and security are considered on our campuses but also during the student transition from home to school.

If you have any questions about this new safety initiative, please call our transportation division at 407-320-7555.
