What's Cool in Our Schools

Seminole High's Gardening Club Takes on Beautification Project

Seminole High's Gardening Club has adopted the two front planter areas for their school. The club decided that the front area of a school offers visitors their first impression, and they wanted to make it warm and welcoming.

Thank you to the students and educators for taking pride in your campus and providing a welcoming environment for all! Go Noles!

Millennium Middle's Tasty DNA Lesson

Ms. Sulzer, an innovative 7th-grade science teacher at Millennium Middle School, found a delicious way to make science fun. To teach her students about DNA, she asked her students to use marshmallows and Twizzlers to create DNA strands. This method kept students engaged and interested throughout the entire lesson.

Thank you, Ms. Sulzer, for bringing your creativity into the classroom! Go Falcons!

Lyman High's Hands-On Engineering Workshop

The Orlando Science Center brought an incredible hands-on workshop to Lyman High School’s Academy of Engineering Aerospace students. As part of their Office of Navy Research Grant, the Orlando Science Center visits schools to inspire the next generation of innovators. Students took on the role of engineers as they collected data on an active volcano. They initially flew drones over the site, then coded robots to navigate elevation data and locate key points.

SCPS would like to thank the Orlando Science Center ensuring that our students are able to visualize potential future careers! Go Greyhounds!

Seminole High AFROTC's Adopt-a-Road Cleanup Initiative

This year, the Air Force ROTC (AFROTC) cadets at Seminole High School were dedicated to maintaining the cleanliness of the areas surrounding their campus. Through the Sanford Adopt-a-Road program, these cadets have worked tirelessly to maintain a spotless community. They have officially completed their final cleanup of the school year.

Seminole High AFROTC's commitment to service and environmental stewardship is truly commendable, and they have set a shining example for all of us! Go Noles!

In the Spotlight

SCPS Teachers Participate in Prestigious UF Instructional Coaching Institute

The UF Instructional Coaching Institute, a program housed within the University of Florida's Lastinger Center for Learning, is dedicated to developing master educators through collaborative peer coaching. SCPS staff participated in this rigorous year-long program, working one-on-one with a mentee through two comprehensive coaching cycles. This year, we had 62 new UF Coach graduates!

Through this experience, participants received in-depth training in the principles of adult learning and the coaching frameworks essential for supporting and strengthening instructional practice. Their work not only empowers fellow educators but also contributes to improved student learning outcomes.

Bentley Elementary Dedicates Multipurpose Room to their First Principal

In honor of Mr. Ron Nathan, Bentley Elementary's very first principal, Bentley dedicated their Multipurpose room as the Ron Nathan Connection Center!

The celebration was filled with joy, student performances, and unforgettable music by the Seminole High Jazz Band. The highlight? Mr. Nathan himself gracing the stage with his saxophone, reminding everyone about the power of connection, community, and heart.

Thank you, Mr. Nathan, for helping build the foundation of Bentley and for continuing to inspire generations to come!

SCPS Hosts Inaugural Level Up Boys Summit

Many SCPS and community leaders supported the inaugural Level Up Boys Summit. This event was aimed at fifth graders from Pine Crest, Hamilton, Midway, Wicklow, Goldsboro, and Bentley Elementary. Students participated in amazing keynotes from motivating speakers and went on tours of the Seminole State College campus. Students learned how to LEVEL UP through resiliency, positive relationships, leadership, decision making, and goal setting.

At SCPS, we want to cultivate the excellence within our students, with the expectation that they carry it throughout life.

One summit down, more to come!

SCPS Principal Spotlight

At SCPS, we are dedicated to celebrating our schools and the exceptional leaders who guide them.

Principal Jason McDonald - Markham Woods Middle

This is Principal Jason McDonald's third year as a principal, currently serving at Markham Woods Middle School. When asked about his favorite part of being a principal, he replied, “My favorite part of being Principal is getting to interact with students from all sorts of backgrounds to help them become better versions of themselves. I love how funny they are and how they keep me young!"

A surprising fact about Principal McDonald, he's a live music fanatic who routinely mixes it up in the mosh pit!

Thank you Principal McDonald for "Rockin" with SCPS!

Scholarship Opportunities

Spring Has Sprung and So Have Scholarship Opportunities!

Now is the perfect time for students to explore postsecondary scholarships. SCPS offers a one-stop shop for finding local, state, and national scholarships.

Students have two helpful tools for their search:

  1. SCPS District Scholarship Page
  2. Visit the Scholarship Database for a list of scholarships available to all SCPS students, organized by deadline.
  3. Xello: Use Xello to search for local, state, and national scholarships customized to your interests.

Bright Futures & Florida Student Scholarships

The Bright Futures application also serves as the application for Florida Student Scholarship & Grant Programs. Students do not need to have met all eligibility requirements before applying. Once submitted, the state periodically reviews student information to determine eligibility. Please note: Eligibility requirements may change each year based on legislation. For the most up-to-date information, visit the Bright Futures website.

FAFSA

Don’t forget to complete the FAFSA—essential for many scholarships and financial aid opportunities!

Students, please see your school counselor for support with all your postsecondary planning.
