What's Cool in Our Schools

Highlands Elementary's Pizza with the Principal Event

Highlands Elementary celebrated its final “Pizza with the Principal” event of the school year, capping off a year of positive referrals with one last joyful gathering.

This exciting tradition brings a select group of students together each month to share lunch and celebrate their exceptional effort, kindness, and growth over the past month with their principal.

What a great way to end the school year. We couldn't be prouder of these students, go Huskies!

Forest City Elementary's Final Theatre Performance

The curtains have closed on Forest City Elementary’s production of Matilda the Musical, marking the end of an unforgettable theatre season. Each performance displayed a culmination of energy, creativity, and heart. It was a celebration not only of the arts, but of their growth, teamwork, and confidence.

We are so proud of the performers and crew in making this production a joy to watch!

Oviedo High's Football Team Visits Lawton Elementary

The Oviedo High School football team traded their helmets in for books during a special visit to Lawton Elementary. The student-athletes spent time reading to elementary students, inspiring them to continue their education and build powerful connections across grade levels.

This visit gave them a chance to give back, encourage young readers, and show that reading and academics are the building blocks of a great education. Go Panthers and Go Lions!

In the Spotlight

Crooms Academy's Class of 1970 Hosts 55th Reunion and Tree Planting Ceremony

Crooms Academy of Information Technology was founded in 1926 and was formerly known as "Crooms High School," and served as the educational option for black students during segregation. The Class of 1970 is historic as they were the last class to officially graduate before desegregation. This incredible group of individuals recognizes their historical significance and hosted a tree planting ceremony at Crooms to remind us of the past and as a symbol of how this class served as a bridge between what was and the uncharted future. It was an emotional celebration as class members toured the school and reminisced about the lessons they learned and carry with them.

Wesh 2 News Anchor Surprises Oviedo High School Teacher

It was a full-circle moment at Oviedo High School as Wesh 2 news anchor Christina Watkins returned to her old stomping grounds to celebrate one of her beloved teachers, Ms. Kathy Savage, who helped shape her path. Ms. Savage will be concluding her 30+ year career, as she is retiring at the end of this school year.

"We love you! We thank you for everything you've done for so many of us, including me," said Watkins, expressing gratitude for Savage's impact.

Thank you, Ms. Savage for you dedicated service to our district. You have truly left your mark and made a lasting impact. Congratulations on your retirement, we wish you the very best!

Lawton Chiles Middle School Students Inducted into International Thespian Society

Congratulations are in order for 26 student performers at Lawton Chiles Middle School, who were officially inducted into the International Thespian Society after earning qualifying points throughout the school year. These points reflect their hours of rehearsal, stage time, behind-the-scenes work, and contributions to the overall success of the drama program.

Amazing work, and congratulations to these students for this outstanding accomplishment!

Markham Woods Middle's Biomechatronics Team Receives Prestigious Moonshot Award

Markham Woods Middle School's Biomechatronics team recently traveled to San Diego, CA to present at Project Invent's "Demo Day" event.

Following their outstanding and innovative presentation, the team has been recognized with the "Moonshot" award from Project Invent for their presentation and prototype. They received a $500 award, and this qualifies them to compete virtually at National Innovation Day this summer. Here, their prototype could earn a provisional patent!

Congratulations to these outstanding Mustangs and their teachers for this prestigious accomplishment!

SCPS Principal Spotlight

At SCPS, we are dedicated to celebrating our schools and the exceptional leaders who guide them.

Principal Martin Dunlop - Rock Lake Middle

Principal Martin Dunlop has been an SCPS principal for six years, currently serving at Rock Lake Middle School. When asked about his favorite part of being a principal, he replied, “My favorite part of being a principal is experiencing and witnessing our students mature and all the great things they do at school. The amount of growth middle schoolers display in only three years is amazing and rewarding."

A surprising fact about Principal Dunlop, he played baseball as a child and through high school.

Thank you, Principal Dunlop, for your exceptional leadership and dedication to student success!

Scholarship Opportunities

It's not too late for students to explore postsecondary scholarships. SCPS offers a one-stop shop for finding local, state, and national scholarships.

Students have two helpful tools for their search:

  1. SCPS District Scholarship Page
  2. Visit the Scholarship Database for a list of scholarships available to all SCPS students, organized by deadline.
  3. Xello: Use Xello to search for local, state, and national scholarships customized to your interests.

Bright Futures & Florida Student Scholarships

The Bright Futures application also serves as the application for Florida Student Scholarship & Grant Programs. Students do not need to have met all eligibility requirements before applying. Once submitted, the state periodically reviews student information to determine eligibility. Please note: Eligibility requirements may change each year based on legislation. For the most up-to-date information, visit the Bright Futures website.

FAFSA

Don’t forget to complete the FAFSA—essential for many scholarships and financial aid opportunities!

Students, please see your school counselor for support with all your postsecondary planning.
