What's Cool in Our Schools

South Seminole Academy of Leadership, Law and Advanced Studies Gives Students the Courtroom Experience

At South Seminole Academy of Leadership, Law, and Advanced Studies, Ms. Walsh’s 5th period class participated in "Street Law's Mock Trial." Street Law conducted a Mock Trial that the class wrote in legal teams for the Plaintiff and Defendant in a Civil case.

The jury had to determine who was liable for the death of the farmer's bull, the farmer or a reckless driver. The jury found the driver/Defendant 70% liable for the damages to the Plaintiff for the loss of their bull.

Having a courtroom as a classroom setting in a middle school to provide opportunities for students interested in the study of law is another reason why SCPS is a premier national district.

Lawton Elementary Students Learn Dollars and Sense

Students in Mr. Bush and Mrs. Feroglia's 3rd grade classes welcomed Mrs. Dent from Charles Schwab who came to talk to students about Financial Literacy for Kids.

The students were excited to make a budget and learned about supply and demand. They even explored how to earn interest at a bank. It was a great way to wrap up to their economics unit!

SCPS Elementary and Middle School Math Festival

The SCPS Department of Teaching and Learning and Millennium Middle School hosted nearly 500 elementary and middle school students from 22 elementary and 10 middle schools as they participated in the second annual SCPS Elementary and Middle School Math Festival. Students competed in both individual and team test rounds to flex their math muscles and win awards for themselves and their schools. The energy was high at the awards ceremony! Congratulations to our top scoring elementary and middle schools, Carillon and Sanford, and to all the other STEMinole Mathletes who gave their all.

Student participants prepared for the event thanks to teacher volunteers who coach students before and during the event. Nearly 100 SCPS teachers, administrators, staff, and parents helped make the day a success. The dedication of our staff, students, and families is just one piece of why Seminole is the #1 STEM district in Florida!

Oviedo High School Student Named Among Top Ten Young Scientists in the Nation

Oviedo High School senior, Ella Pilacek, was named among the top ten young scientists nationwide in the prestigious Regeneron Science Talent Search. This competition is the oldest and most prestigious in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields for high school seniors.

Ella’s accomplishment in reaching the top ten among thousands of participants across the United States underscores her innovative thinking and passion for scientific exploration. Her project involved researching ways to teach non-native honeybees how to pollinate an endangered native species of orchid. By mixing the compounds of the flower’s scent with a sugar solution that bees naturally love, Ella was successfully able to train the bees to be attracted to the scent, potentially making increased pollination and species survival more likely.

This project not only demonstrated a deep understanding of complex scientific concepts but also showcased Ella’s ability to creatively apply these concepts to a real-world challenge, making her stand out among her peers, and providing a $70,000 prize.
