A Note for Our Community

Dear SCPS Family and Community Members,

On December 8th, it was announced that the Giving Tree project had only received donations and funding for about 500 of the 2,000 requested gifts for our homeless and economically disadvantaged students. You could hear the disappointment in the room, but in typical family fashion, SCPS was not going to let that happen.

Staff and community members dug deep and brought in more toys and contributed more money. Friends and businesses were asked to help, and they willingly and graciously responded. As of December 14th, each and every child whose name was part of the Giving Tree will have gifts to open.

Your spirit and generosity are overwhelming, and from a mother's perspective, I can't thank you enough for making sure the magic of the holiday season will be available for each of our students. Thank you once again for demonstrating why SCPS is truly a family.

Best wishes for safe and happy holidays,

Serita D. Beamon, Superintendent

Layer Elementary Students Walk on the Wild Side

Students from Layer Elementary were excited to visit the Ed Yarborough Nature Center for an outdoor field trip.

They got to touch and interact with animals and explore nature and the environment. They had a wonderful time and some of them even decided that snakes weren't scary at all!

Bentley Elementary Students Take a Ride on the Polar Express

Kindergarten and first grade students at Bentley Elementary School enjoyed their ride on the Polar Express. This tradition has been in place for the past ten years.

A local group of grandmothers in the Villages hand crochet hundreds of colorful hats and students get to choose which they would like for themselves.

There was even an appearance from the Grinch, but we're happy to report that no gifts were taken and even the Grinch seemed to be in the spirit of the holidays!

Lake Howell High School Teacher Wins Emmy

Nick Joiner of Lake Howell High School used his talents to work on a project last year with Adrenaline films in Orlando. Nadiya Ukraine: National Ballet Live from Steinmetz Hall, featured video event coverage for the National Ukrainian Ballet, a benefit concert that was held at the Dr. Phillips center, after the war in Ukraine broke out. Mr. Joiner was a camera operator on the project and it is currently airing Nationally on PBS at the link posted here: https://www.pbs.org/show/nadiya-ukraine-the-national-ballet-live-from-steinmetz-hall/

This production won a Suncoast Emmy Award. Congratulations to Mr. Joiner!

Casselberry Elementary Named National Unified Champion School

Casselberry Elementary celebrated a huge honor when they were identified as a National Unified Champion School. There were only 16 schools in the state of Florida, and 200 schools nationally receiving this distinction. We want to say thank you to the Special Olympics and Coaches Laurel Robinson and Karen Owens from the SCPS district exceptional student education PE Team, as well as the Casselberry administration, faculty, staff, students, and their families.

Goldsboro Elementary Magnet Teacher Named PBS NewsHour Classroom Invention Education Fellow

We are excited to share that Mary Lynn Hess, a teacher at Goldsboro Elementary Magnet School has been selected as a PBS NewsHour Classroom Invention Education Fellow for the 2023-2024 school year.

Invention Education is a standards-based learning approach that teaches all students how to be inventors. For years now we’ve seen young people’s entrepreneurial spirits bring about positive change in their local communities and that they are truly engaged when they are “doing invention” in school.

Each month, 22 Fellows from across the U.S. will meet virtually in the evenings, and they will also spend a few hours of class time exploring invention this school year. The group includes upper-elementary, middle and high school teachers in both STEM, social studies, English and journalism classes — some folks who may never have heard the term “Invention Education” before but know that brainstorming, working together and producing new tools to help others and improve society are what America is all about.

Congratulations to Ms. Hess and all of the Goldsboro Elementary Magnet team!
