What's Cool in Our Schools

Winter Springs High School Students Take One of a Kind Trip in Silence

Winter Springs High School American Sign Language (ASL) level 3 and 4 students, consisting of 8 seniors and 1 junior, flew to Washington DC for a fully immersive trip to the world's only university for Deaf and hard of hearing people.

They toured the school, the city, and were voice-off for 4 days, only using American Sign Language to communicate. This trip is taken every two years to give advanced ASL students a chance to use what they've learned and also, so they know the opportunities for jobs that use ASL.

SCPS Hosts 9th Annual Strings Festival

SCPS presented its 9th String Day featuring students from our two high school string programs, Lake Howell and Seminole, two middle school programs, Millennium and Tuskawilla, and our five elementary programs, Bentley, Midway, Red Bug, Rainbow, and Sterling Park. Students were selected by their instructors to participate as a part of this special performance.

The standing-room-only crowd listened to a 70-minute concert that featured four ensembles organized by skill level, Elementary (grades 3-5), Novice (grades 6-7), Intermediate (grades 6-10), and Advanced (grades 8-12), and concluded with a “Grand Finale” with a rendition of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” with all 312 string students and support from 13 winds and percussion musicians including students from Lake Howell and SCPS faculty.

It was truly a magical performance enjoyed by all, and parents were thrilled at the number of strings programs available for our students.

Young Men and Women of Excellence Program Participants Experience College Life

Young Men and Women of Excellence from Seminole High, Lake Brantley High, Lake Mary High, and Lyman High recently went on a college tour to gain experience in college life.

This experience allowed our students to meet face-to-face with college admission representatives from universities/colleges and tour the campuses.

Students learned about financial aid, scholarships, Student Aid Reports, college essays, letters of recommendation, setting educational goals, transcripts, and exposure to college campus life.

Eastbrook Elementary School Resource Deputy Swears in "Junior Deputies"

School Resource Deputies and Officers not only help create safer campuses, but they also create powerful relationships and serve as role models and mentors for many students.

Deputy Anthony Fiore at Eastbrook Elementary is a shining example of building relationships and helping students become role models for their peers. We are so thankful for our partnership with law enforcement and all of the ways they serve our schools and communities.
