Sixty Seconds with the Superintendent

Each week, we receive questions for the Superintendent from students in pre-K through 12th grade. In this video series, Ms. Beamon will answer these questions and help our families and the community we serve get to know the leader of our public schools.

Seminole High Students Make History with Scrub Jay Project

Kris Cole, a teacher at Seminole High, along with his students invited Seminole County Commissioner Amy Lockhart to the classroom to discuss the Board of Seminole County Commissioners to endorse the Florida Scrub-jay for state bird. The students convinced Commissioner Lockhart to let them share their opinions about the issue with the Board at a Seminole County Board of Commissioners Meeting. When the students presented to the Board, they asked if Seminole County might be willing to not only endorse the Florida Scrub-jay as state bird, but also name it Seminole County's "official bird". The Commission passed the idea unanimously - pending the verbiage of the resolution was acceptable to everyone. The students spent Winter Break working out the verbiage. This week, pen was put to paper and the students accomplished something historic!

Teddy Gram Direct Provides Job Training to Young People with Disabilities

This story provided courtesy of WESH 2 news

A new student enterprise in the Seminole County Public School district called Teddy Gram Direct is providing young people with disabilities the opportunity to work alongside their non-disabled peers and staff to create stuffed animals for sale around the county. The program was founded by educator Felicia Naidu in the fall of 2021 with the aim of teaching life skills and providing job training to young people with special needs.

The program works by fulfilling orders that come through the Teddy Gram Direct website. Students go through a checklist to ensure accuracy, collect a bear or other stuffed animal from the supply room, make sure it has a heart, and fill it with fluff. Then, they write or type out a thank-you message, pack up each order, and send it out to families in the community. The program accommodates and modifies its activities to best serve the needs of its students.

One of the program's key goals is to help students develop skills that will help them enter the workforce. "All of our kids are going to go places; it just looks different for each of them," Naidu said.

Bear Lake 5th Graders Visit Channel 6 News Studio

Bear Lake Elementary School's 5th grade News Crew students took a field trip to Channel 6's news studios this week. They had an amazing time learning all about the behind-the-scenes work that goes into daily broadcasts. Students were able to interact with on-air anchors and meteorologists. It was a great opportunity for them to see the similarities and differences between our school news program and the local news channels broadcast.

Seminole County Public Schools Recognized at Local Event

At this year's Interfaith Iftar event, the theme was "acquiring knowledge." The organization wanted to recognize the contribution of educators and those in public schools so they invited Superintendent Serita Beamon to accept the award on behalf of the district. Ms. Beamon was joined by school board Vice Chair Abby Sanchez, member Amy Pennock, and members of the district leadership team.

It was a wonderful evening with people from every background coming together to acknowledge and celebrate the impact of education in our lives.
