Students at Eastbrook Elementary Get an Out-of-this-World Lesson!
Mrs. Smith’s 1st-grade class from Eastbrook Elementary had a special guest this week. Christopher Bonilha, a rocket design engineer from Blue Origins (Jeff Bezos’ aerospace company), discussed how they are problem-solving for future trips to space. He also shared what essentials are needed for space travel and the many jobs it takes to successfully launch rockets into the sky.
Afterward, the students decorated and wrote on postcards with their solutions and ideas for space travel. This postcard will be sent to space and the children will receive them back in a year - which means these students will have a real souvenir from space!

Annual SCPS Rube Goldberg Machine Competition Sparks Creativity
The annual SCPS Rube Goldberg Machine Competition was a huge success! Congratulations to all the student teams for their hard work and innovation!
Rube Goldberg was an American cartoonist whose cartoons often depicted devices that performed simple tasks in an overcomplicated, impractical chain of events! A Rube Goldberg machine is a deliberately over-engineered or overdone machine that performs a very simple task in a very complex fashion.
| |
|
For the contest, students in grades 4-8 were challenged to create a complex machine that can activate an EASY button. The creation of these machines incorporates elements of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math with Art (STEAM) to develop problem-solving skills through creativity. Learning critical science concepts such as Energy Transfer, Forces in Motion, and Engineering are reinforced through the creation of these machines. | |
Bentley Elementary School Builds the Ultimate Rube Goldberg Machine!
Congratulations to Bentley Elementary School's Rube Goldberg Team! They earned 1st place at the SCPS Competition. Their task was to ”Activate an Easy Button” and they did it with 16 Transfers of Energy and 17 Simple Machines with a creative design and story. We are so proud of you! Special thanks to our coaches Mrs. Regan and Mrs. Barch!

Student performers from Midway School of the Arts, Rainbow Elementary School, Red Bug Elementary School, Tuskawilla Middle School, Millennium Middle School, Lake Howell High School, and Seminole High School came together to perform Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture at the Strings Concert this past weekend.
Students were given the sheet music ahead of time, however, they only had one rehearsal all together before the big performance. Each grade level also had individual performances before the combined finale.
Amazing job to each and every one of our student performers!
