Louisiana Senate Votes Against 1972 ERA
BATON ROUGE – Today, the Louisiana Senate voted down SCR 2, the ratification of the 1972 Equal Rights Amendment, by a margin of 9-26.

Benjamin Clapper, Executive Director of Louisiana Right to Life, said the following after the vote, “Louisiana Right to Life commends the Louisiana Senate for voting against the ratification of the 1972 Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Leading pro-abortion groups have acknowledged that the ERA would codify abortion rights in America, requiring judges to strike down all pro-life state laws. Because of this pro-abortion impact, we opposed the ratification, and applaud the Senate for showing their commitment to protecting life."

Clapper continued, "Louisiana Right to Life particularly applauds the leadership of Senator Beth Mizell (R-Franklinton) who presented the pro-abortion ramifications of the 1972 ERA before the entire Senate. Senator Mizell’s clarifications amidst an often misunderstood issue was essential to defending life today. Senator Mizell is a model of a successful pro-life woman leader for Louisiana."
