Highlight of the
October 27th
CRAAG Meeting
Legislative Issues/Systemic Concerns: A Conversation with Senator Deeds,
DBHDS and Region Ten

What to Expect

  • Senator Creigh Deeds, a tireless advocate for mental health issues in Virginia, wanted to hear from CRAAG families to learn about the needs of adults with autism. CRAAG hosted a meeting on October 5th for the Senator. The meeting began with Bob Kreps, CRAAG Chairperson, introducing the issues that most concern CRAAG now. He was followed by Heather Norton, DBHDS Assistant Commissioner. Region Ten's Lisa Beitz and Heather Hines, Executive Director and Senior Director of Adult Developmental Services respectively, spoke next. The lengthy Q & A discussion offered many opportunities for family members to express their concerns to the invited leaders of DBHDS, Region Ten, Faison Center, and VIA. It was a positive exchange of ideas and suggestions. Senator Deeds was a good listener and very engaged throughout all aspects of the discussion. Senator Deeds' time was very much appreciated by all.

  • At the upcoming October 27th CRAAG meeting, Bob Kreps will present his introductory slides from the Deeds' meeting. Family members and others who attended the October 5th are welcome to share their observations.

  • You won't want to miss this discussion and Q & A!

Charlottesville Region Autism Action Group or CRAAG began in 2010 in collaboration with CA Human Services (formerly Commonwealth Autism). Since 2010, CA Human Services has supported CRAAG as our fiscal agent, advisors, collaborators, and boosters. We value and thank CA for the ongoing support!

When people were complaining that they couldn't find us online, CA Human Services helped CRAAG establish a more visible social media presence. With this issue of the newsletter, we are excited to share our new webpage. Click here to check it out. The resources and information posted on our webpage will continue to expand month by month. If you have any feedback for us, please email CRAAG! If you're on Facebook, please like our Facebook page.

While you're on our webpage, be sure to check out CRAAG's 2021 Housing Report. Published last month, this report initiated a multi-year effort to expand the number of housing options, supports and services available to meet the needs of adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. About CRAAG
CRAAG began in 2010 in collaboration with CA Human Services (formerly Commonwealth Autism). CRAAG’s mission is to raise awareness and enhance the quality of life for people with autism, developmental disabilities, and their families in Charlottesville City, Albemarle, Greene, Fluvanna, Louisa and Nelson counties. We are a volunteer action group for families, self-advocates, and professionals who are interested in all age groups and levels of need. The daily concerns of CRAAG's active volunteers inform our focus on the needs of students transitioning out of high school, adults throughout the lifespan, and their families. Our advocacy is person-centered aimed at maximizing independent living with supports; meaningful employment; social connectivity; and community engagement. CRAAG's 2021 Housing survey initiated a years-long initiative in our region to expand the number of housing options, supports and services available to meet the needs of adults with developmental disabilities.
