SENATOR DEVIERE STATEMENT ON COURT DIRECTED DISTRICT MAPS
The court ordered that unconstitutional partisan gerrymandered maps be redrawn by the legislature in certain senate districts.  The court order directed legislators to redraw these maps  in 14 days .  Senator deViere voted to support Senate Bill 692(2019 Senate Consensus Nonpartisan Map) because he believed it complies with the court’s order as did 37 other Senators including 13 Democratic members.

He feels that this process was not perfect but it was bi-partisan and transparent as it could be given the time and resource constraint. It didn't fully take politicians out of the redistricting process which Senator deViere strongly believes must be corrected through legislation or constitutional amendment.  He has asked his Senate colleagues to bring Senate Bill 673 (NC Citizens Redistricting Commission), a bill he co-sponsored, to committee so that they can have a discussion about a better and fairer way to protect the voices of the voters.

Additionally, Senator deViere voted against House Bill 1020 (2019 House Remedial Map) as did all other 20 democratic senators. In this situation, he believed that the House Legislative maps were not drawn in compliance with the court directions.
GOVERNOR COOPER'S SCHOOL SUPPLY DROP OFF IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY
Last week, Senator Kirk deViere joined The North Carolina Department of Public Safety Secretary, Erik Hooks, and other Cumberland County leaders as they helped drop off school supplies to students and teachers at Pine Forest High School in partnership with Governor Cooper's Office and his Annual School Supply Donation Drive. ‪The average NC Teacher spends $400 out of pocket on school supplies for their students and Senator deViere agrees with Governor Cooper that our teachers deserve legislators that are committed to them & their students.

Governor Cooper’s School Supply Drive is offered in partnership between the North Carolina Governor’s Office, the North Carolina Business Committee on Education and its partners, VolunteerNC, State Employees Credit Union, and Communities In Schools of North Carolina.
