We are currently accepting applications for our 2022 Spring iCan! Work class. This program is designed to help transition individuals with Down syndrome into the workplace. The program will begin mid-February and run for approximately 16 weeks.
To participate in the iCan! Work Program, an individual must:
- have Down syndrome
- be registered with Vocational Rehabilitation (we can help with this!)
- have reliable transportation to their assigned worksite
- have completed high school and transition programs
The program will include on the job training (OJT) with our community partners: Levy Restaurants (Magic games), Quality One Wireless, and Orlando Health. Additionally, there is a weekly Lunch & Learn program to go over the soft skills needed to succeed in the workplace.
The goal for every participant is long-term, meaningful employment at a location that is convenient for the employee and the family. Participants are paid when they work, and it is free for members to participate in the program. This program requires an interview and acceptance into the program.
There will be evening and weekend shifts with the Orlando Magic games, but most shifts are between 8am and 6pm.
If you have questions about the program, please contact info@dsfflorida.org or 407.538.3537.

World Down Syndrome Day 2022
|
|
Why Do People Wear Colored Socks on World Down Syndrome Day?
To raise awareness and give people a reason to talk about the myths and misconceptions of Down syndrome. Chromosomes are shaped like socks, so the idea was born. The socks on WDSD are worn by people all over the world to get noticed, and they are colorful, attractive, and utterly unique!
Did you know that wearing CRAZY socks is also a sign of a leader?
Some people just love to wear fun and bright socks, whether they are hidden underneath a serious suit or out in full view for the world to see. If you are one of those people and are prone to wearing outlandish socks, then it's good news...
A study by Harvard University has revealed that people who wear crazy, eccentric socks tend to be more successful. But why is this?
The theory is that people who choose to wear bold, unusual patterns and colors are nonconformists who live life their own way. They are thought to be more ambitious, able and successful, without a need to follow the norm.
Bright socks are also the sign of a leader and "a brilliant mind", Business Insider reports. The research, undertaken at Harvard Business School, found that nonconformist behavior signified by the flamboyant socks can encourage others to view us as more successful and in a more positive light.
The study also found that socks don't just affect how other people perceive us, they also impact on how you feel about yourself. Ultimately, they will make you feel more confident.
So...forget dull socks and don your brightest and boldest pair!
You may be more successful for it.
Do you own your own pair of CRAZY socks? If not, you can buy them and 10% of your proceeds will benefit The FOUNDATION. FG-DSFFL22 is the DSFF code, it is not a discount code - it's our FUN(d)raising code. You enter the code when prompted at the beginning of the checkout, not at the end of the process. We earn 10% and you will get a free gift [mystery sock] added to the cart automatically!
We will also be auctioning off a pair of John's CRAZY Socks each month for a year during the auction!
