Black History Month

The Town of Georgina recognizes and celebrates the month of February as Black History Month. It is a time to recognize the legacy, history and contributions of Black Canadians and their impact on communities throughout the country. Join us for programs and opportunities to learn about African Canadian culture, including Black History Month programs hosted by Georgina Public Library and and the Stephen Leacock Theatre of Performing Arts. Learn more at georgina.ca/BlackHistoryMonth.

Pink Shirt Day

Unite against bullying on Wednesday, Feb. 25, by wearing a pink shirt for Pink Shirt Day. Together, we can show that our community stands against bullying everywhere, whether it's in schools, on the sports field or online. Remember that our diversity and respect for each other is what makes us strong. Learn more at pinkshirtday.ca.

2026 Waste and Recycling Calendar

A limited number of the 28-page booklet-style waste and recycling calendars will be arriving next week. They will be available at some Town facilities including Georgina Public Library locations, while supplies last. A digital version of the booklet-style calendar will also be available online soon. The one-page, two-sided calendar has already been delivered and can be viewed online. Learn more or view available digital calendars at georgina.ca/WasteandRecycling.

Call for local artists

Established Georgina artists are invited to submit proposals for a small-scale public art piece and interpretive display board to commemorate the Old Shiloh Road bridge, which is scheduled for replacement beginning in 2026. The selected artwork will reflect the bridge’s history, connections to the Udora community and local Indigenous peoples, and the surrounding natural environment. The artwork is anticipated to be unveiled in summer 2026. Submissions are due Feb. 17.Learn more or apply at georgina.ca/ArtEOI.

Winter operations are underway

As snow accumulates, snow lift operations may be required in intersections, school zones, narrow roads and downtown areas where snow storage is limited. When temporary no-parking restrictions are required, residents will receive 48 hours’ notice and signage will be posted. Vehicles must be removed from the street between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on scheduled snow lift streets. Where no parking restrictions are needed, snow lift work may proceed without advance notice. In some locations, snow removal can be completed while vehicles remain parked. A reminder, that during extended cold weather, snow may become hard-packed as salt is less effective, so crews use a sand and salt mix to improve traction and safety. Regular winter parking restrictions remain in effect on most streets between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. Learn more about winter operations and track snowplows at georgina.ca/snow.

Frozen pipes

With extreme cold temperatures, the Town is reminding residents to take steps to prevent frozen water pipes. Pipes in unheated or poorly insulated areas are most at risk during prolonged cold. Residents are encouraged to keep areas with plumbing warm and seal drafts where cold air may enter. Some residents may be directed by the Town to run a cold-water tap during extreme cold. Only the people instructed by the Town are eligible for compensation for increased water use. Learn more at georgina.ca/FrozenPipes.
