November 2024

Dear Sherwood,

November is a month of gratitude, and this month I want to take the opportunity to express my profound gratitude to each of you.

For five decades, Sherwood Autism Center has been honored to serve, support, and stand with our hundreds of autistic students, clients, and families in Kansas City.

  • To our students and clients — you are our mission. Every day, you remind us of the resilience and potential that exists in each of us. Your achievements — big and small — motivate us to continue expanding our resources and programs so that you can continue reaching your potential.
  • To our families — your commitment and strength light the way forward. Thank you for entrusting us with your loved ones and sharing your stories. We’re grateful to be a part of your journey.
  • To our dedicated staff — you are the heart of Sherwood. Your passion, care, and expertise create the supportive environment our students, clients, and families rely on every day. Thank you for going above and beyond in making a difference; your impact is deeply felt and truly transformative.
  • Finally, to our community supporters — because of your support, Sherwood Autism Center has been able to evolve and grow, meeting new challenges and reaching more individuals with autism in Kansas City. Your continued involvement makes our mission a reality.

As we celebrate 50 years, we look forward to our next chapter with excitement and dedication. To continue providing and expanding our programs, we ask you to consider a special anniversary gift.

A donation of $50 — one dollar for every year we've been in service — will help empower our mission, create new opportunities, and ensure that we can serve even more individuals and families in the years to come.

Our Adult Day Services clients are making the most of fall! We've been all around town exploring pumpkin patches, nature trails, and the zoo. And of course, we've been cheering on our hometown team, the Chiefs!

Special Education: Halloween School Spirit Week

Spirit Week and Halloween were a blast at school! Students and teachers went all out with costumes and decorations, making for a day full of fun and spooky school spirit. Other Spirit Week highlights included Fall Flannel Day and PJ Day.

Support neurodiversity! We'd love you to join us as a monthly giver! Just $5/month helps Sherwood create unforgettable experiences for our trailblazers. Thank you!

Meet Susan!

Meet Susan, Sherwood’s nurse! Susan is LPN School Nurse and Nurse for Adult Day Services as well. She provides care through immunizations, monitoring students and adults of illness, overseeing medical administrations, and collaborating with guardians, parents, and providers to ensure the best care for those at Sherwood. “The students and adults truly brighten each day!”

  • Her Sherwood connection: Susan has been a nurse for more than 30 years and during her careers she has worked as a psych nurse, in a nursing home, and the Jackson County Public administration office. “I have enjoyed every moment here at Sherwood!” she says.
  • Day in the life: “A typical day on both sides always varies. It can start as soon as they get off the bus or to the day program. Some days are very busy and all staff steps in to help,” she says. “I enjoy watching them on the playground and love interacting with them.”
  • Joy outside of work: Susan’s family brings her the most joy. “I love spending my weekends with my granddaughter and am expecting a new grandson in December which is very exciting. I love being outside and just enjoying life!”

Susan, we are grateful for your care and commitment to our students and adults. We’re truly a better place because of you — thank you!
