May is the month of the Older Adult. In Marin County, we proclaimed 2018, the Year of the Older Adult. With about 27% of our population over 60 years old and this number expected to grow to 33% by 2030, celebrating Marin’s Older Adults makes sense.
How are we celebrating our older adults? What are we doing about the growing number of our family members, friends and neighbors with memory loss?
Everyone I know knows someone with dementia. It is estimated that up to 8,000 adults in Marin County are currently diagnosed with memory loss.
Marin has two adult day programs, and Senior Access is Marin’s ONLY social adult day program for clients with memory loss and we NEED your help!
Senior Access began in 1973, when two nurses from UCSF started a program to provide respite to families with memory loss. We say “families with memory loss,” because this journey really is one in which the whole family, including friends and neighbors, is affected. In a recent survey, we asked how many people are affected by your loved one’s memory loss. One caregiver responded… 24. 24 people are directly affected by one person’s diagnosis and journey into memory loss!
As many of you know, this journey can be really challenging! There are lots of unknowns: daily ups and downs, plenty of stress, loss, but also plenty of laughs. At Senior Access, we support the caregivers, by providing daily respite and support groups and the clients, by creating a loving, fun, engaging, social and stimulating environment.
Senior Access’ two adult day programs – the Excursion Program and the Club - are fun, therapeutic and stimulate the mind, body and spirit. We have created a program and a culture, in which love, respect, compassion and fun are valued.
Senior Access’ day programs help loved ones age in place for as long as possible. Without Senior Access, families with memory loss are left with fewer options and many of those options are very costly.
Senior Access charges a daily fee for providing high quality programing. But,
the fee we charge does not nearly cover our costs. Providing our high quality, innovative programs for adults with memory loss is really expensive!
We cannot rely on a fee for service model. We really
NEED your help!
At this time, we cannot keep our programs going, let alone thrive, unless Marin residents, businesses and funders recognize this need and support Senior Access.
Without a great increase of funding, the ONE adult day program providing respite for families with memory loss in Marin County will cease to exist.
In the last few years, due to changes in funding priorities, support from the County of Marin, the Marin Community Foundation and various grantors has significantly diminished. That has left us in a really tough spot. We need to recognize this gap and do something about it!
We see a bright future for Senior Access. Next month, we will celebrate 45 years supporting families with memory loss in Marin County. Stay tuned for our Happy Birthday/Thank you video.
We know that we need to grow and increase our services, as the number of adults with memory loss in Marin continues to climb.
NEED your help to make this happen!
