Photo Tour of Zimbabwe If traveling a great distance is out of reach, come enjoy the adventure through story and photos! In 2011, Peter Master traveled to Zimbabwe, where he was hosted by his Zimbabwean friend Wilson, who lives with his wife and children in the city of Mutare. Wilson accompanied him to several different areas of the country, including the fortress of Great Zimbabwe, from which the country derives its name. You may know Peter from the dining room where he shares his piano talents - now you can enjoy his love of adventure as well! Join in on Tuesday, April 11 at 11:00AM.
Shoreway Environmental Center Tour This tour will provide an inside look at how recyclables are sorted in the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and how compost and garbage are consolidated at the Transfer Station. RethinkWaste staff will also review bin sorting, discuss reuse and reduction tips, and answer all your tricky questions about where items belong (or don’t belong!) when you no longer need them. Our tour will begin at 9:30AM on Friday, April 21 and last approximately 1h15m. We will carpool from Senior Coastsiders (departing between 8:30-8:45AM). Please sign up in advance with the office at 650-726-9056 and indicate if you can provide a ride to others.
Let's all go to the movies! We'll provide the popcorn and the film, you just need to be entertained. Each month, we roll down the big screen in the dining room for a feature film (some old, some new). This month, join us to watch Don't Look Up Tuesday, April 11 at 3:00PM.

Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), an astronomy grad student, and her professor Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) make an astounding discovery of a comet orbiting within the solar system. The problem - it's on a direct collision course with Earth. The other problem? No one really seems to care. Turns out warning mankind about a planet-killer the size of Mount Everest is an inconvenient fact to navigate. With the help of Dr. Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan), Kate and Randall embark on a media tour that takes them from the office of an indifferent President Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her sycophantic son and Chief of Staff, Jason (Jonah Hill), to the airwaves of The Daily Rip, an upbeat morning show hosted by Brie (Cate Blanchett) and Jack (Tyler Perry). With only six months until the comet makes impact, managing the 24-hour news cycle and gaining the attention of the social media obsessed public before it's too late proves shockingly comical - what will it take to get the world to just look up?

If you have movie suggestions, please stop by the office and let us know!
Celebrating Portugal with a live virtual tour and lunch International cuisine AND special programming, what could be better!? This month we will be taking a LIVE virtual tour to one of the oldest districts in Lisbon: Alfama. The name Alfama comes from Al Hammm, the root word for hammam, a bathing space during the Islamic occupation. We will find out why the neighborhood has received such name, and why and how the Islamic presence lasts for about 400 years in the city that is nowadays the capital of Portugal. We will visit the viewpoint of Portas do Sol (Doors of the Sun) and while walking down the narrow streets of Alfama, we will find out more about St. Vincent and his connection to the city's history, the Tagus river and its importance for the city’s development, and much much more! Suggested donation for the tour is $10.00 and you must sign up in advance with the office. This will be a live tour with our guide walking us through the streets of Lisbon.

Following our tour, you can enjoy a traditional Portuguese soup, Caldo Verde, served up in the dining room. Join in the fun, Monday, April 17. Tour starts promptly at 10:30AM and lunch at 12:00PM.

Good Grief: Living with Loss On Sunday, April 16th, Reb Moshe Heyn will present as part of UUCC's Gallery View Sundays over Zoom at 11am. Grief is a natural response to loss but the pain can often feel overwhelming. Whether we are struggling to cope with the death of a loved one, or with any number of other losses, we are often left feeling that life will never be the same again. Even if that is true, there are healthy ways of coping that can help us come to terms with death and loss, and find new meaning in life.

Rabbi Moshe Heyn has worked as a Hospice Chaplain for well over a decade. He has walked with hundreds of patients through the many stages of living and dying, and has counseled and supported many of their loved ones who were left behind. He will share stories about some of his most remarkable encounters and some of the most life-changing lessons he has gleaned from them. UUCC Gallery View Sunday, April 16th, 11am, Zoom link (zoom.us meeting link https://zoom.us/j/6617755196, passcode 416762). Contemplative Practice for Resilience and Well-Being
Contemplative practice behaviors include activities such as meditation, prayer, breath awareness, gratitude, and compassion. There is substantial scientific evidence that contemplative practice behaviors provide physical and psychosocial health benefits. Contemplative practices have been shown to strengthen resilience, self-awareness, mindfulness, self-regulation and distress tolerance.

Translating this science into impact, Senior Coastsiders is pleased to offer a dynamic series delivered by content experts and designed to build contemplative practice behaviors and promote resilience. These free sessions occur monthly through May 2023 with some taking place via Zoom and others in person at Senior Coastsiders. A resource booklet will be developed to assist interested individuals in finding out more information about contemplative practices.

  • Session 10 Mind-Body Centering, Tuesday, May 9, 4:00-5:00PM (In-person)

In a study conducted among older adults right here on the Coast, individuals who reported high levels of resilience had long held behaviors of contemplative practices that helped them effectively adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, this study found a strong relationship between higher resilience and improved well-being. This study has just been published in an academic journal after having gone through a rigorous peer review process. If you would like to read the study, it can be accessed HERE.

Senior Coastsiders
May 4th is Coastside Gives Day. This year there are 62 worthy nonprofits for you to support that include organizations focused on education, the environment, art and culture, and human services. Senior Coastsiders is very grateful for $20,000 of matching donations that we’ve received from The Robert G Kirby Foundation Fund and $13,500 of matching donations that we’ve received from our Board members – all of whom have given for this special campaign. This year money raised will be used to offer more opportunities that promote the physical, mental and social well-being of ALL Coastside older adults. We hope Senior Coastsiders will be included in your 2023 Coastside Gives donations.
A note from Executive Director, Sandi Winter
Exciting news – Senior Coastsiders will be removing part of our dining room floor to make way for an Olympic sized lap pool!!

If you believed the above statement, then you fell for my April Fools joke!! April Fools' Day is an annual custom of practical jokes and hoaxes that is celebrated on 1 April. Its origins aren’t clear. Some historians have speculated that it dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, resulting in the start of the new year being moved to January 1 instead of April 1. Those who continued to celebrate the new year during the last week of March through April 1 were called “April fools.” Another origin theory is that in ancient Rome followers of the cult of Cybele celebrated Hilaria (Latin for joyful) at the end of March by dressing up in disguises and mocking fellow citizens. There’s also speculation that April Fools’ Day was tied to the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, when Mother Nature fooled people with changing, unpredictable weather.

Some of the more notable pranks have included an invitation to London residents to view the annual ceremony of washing the lions on April 1, 1856; a BBC documentary featuring a Swiss farming family harvesting long strands of pasta from their spaghetti trees on April 1, 1957; and a Swedish technical breakthrough that involved stretching a pair of nylon stockings in front of black-and-white TV screens to transform the picture into stunning color on April 1, 1962. Perhaps my favorite was a BBC prank in 1972 in which astronomer Sir Patrick Moore told listeners that at 9:47 a.m. that day, the temporary alignment of Pluto and Jupiter would cause a reduction in Earth’s gravity, allowing people to briefly levitate. At 9:48, the BBC received hundreds of phone calls from people reporting they had floated in the air! In the US on April 1, 1998, Burger King ran a full-page ad in USA Today to unveil a new menu item – a burger specifically engineered for left-handed people. Thousands of customers requested the new burger!! In 2000, Google played its first April Fools’ Day prank by announcing their new feature - “MentalPlex” technology that supposedly read people’s minds, thereby bypassing the need to type in a query.

The first quarter of 2023 has been particularly tough for our Coastside community. I hope some of the silly pranks described here made you smile. I’m heartened at the early signs of spring - sunny blue skies appearing intermittently between the storms, more hours of sunlight each day, trees in bud and bloom, and baby rabbits on the coastal trail.

Wishing you a happy Spring. Take care.
Sandi

BTW – a passionate group of individuals on the Coast is advocating for an outdoor community pool. If you’re interested, let me know and I can provide more information.
