Pay-What-You-Can Night at Coastal Repertory Theater
Bright Star is a musical written and composed by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. It is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in 1945–46 with flashbacks to 1923. Inspired by a true story and featuring the Tony®-nominated score by Martin and Brickell, Broadway’s BRIGHT STAR tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ’40s. When literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past—and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives. With beautiful melodies and powerfully moving characters, the story unfolds as a rich tapestry of deep emotion. An uplifting theatrical journey that holds you tightly in its grasp, BRIGHT STAR is as refreshingly genuine as it is daringly hopeful.
Pay-What-You-Can Night is Thursday, August 3. No reservation required, donations appreciated! More information can be found at www.coastalrep.com

Senior Coastsiders
|
|
For those of you who shopped at Hassett Ace Hardware in Half Moon Bay in May you may have been asked by one of their friendly sales associates if you’d like to round up your purchase at check-out to benefit Senior Coastsiders. If you did – thank you! And thank you so much to Alejandro Alvarez, the store manager, for facilitating this fund-raising opportunity for us. Ale came to Senior Coastsiders the other day so that he could personally deliver a check of $871. We are most grateful for the support of our community.
Thank you also to the sponsors and contributors who supported our fantastically fun community BBQ held on July 14th – what a great time we all had! These included The Barn, Spanglers Market, Le Moon Zest, Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, Miramar Beach Restaurant, Brush Hog Tree Care, Sea Crest School, Sheppard Family Dentistry and the fabulous band The Back Pages. This event was organized by our wonderful lead volunteers Kathy Conroy and Barbie Hummel and made possible by our tireless kitchen staff and volunteers. Thank you one and all!

For my section this month I would like to share with you a beautiful poem written by Marshall Davis Jones, an author, speaker, and founder of MindBodySpeak. I read this poem recently in the daily “wisdom well” emails I get from Chip Conley, the founder of the Modern Elder Academy (MEA) and a
New York Times best-selling author. I encourage you to read it out loud!
What will you put in the ground?
What will you dig into the dirt and place there?
What will you paint deep inside of the earth?
What will you demand that rays of sun
and a soak of rain hold concert with the soil to nurture?
What will you grow here?
Will it be fear?
Will it be doubt?
A low hanging fruit of your shortcoming?
Or a high branch of your forthcoming?
You.
What will you put in the ground?
What will you dig into the deep of your core to place there?
What will you plant inside the belly of your soul?
Demand that a shine of sun and a fall of rain pay tribute..
Soak the soil in your subconscious and nurture.
What will you grow here?
Will it be ghosts and phantoms of your past?
Or the Fantasia of your future?
Is it your situation or your solution?
Will it be footprints of failure or the footwork of fearlessness?
What will you put in the ground?
What will you dig deep inside yourself?
Allow to flow forth from you?
Will it be your purpose and your passion?
Will it be poised to weed out that which weakens you?
The fruit of fruition is a harvest that which has been hard earned, but damn was well worth
What are your branches becoming?
Are you reaching skyward for the sun?
Skyward for the rain while you stand knee deep in the dirt?
Proud of how the sky strikes tall and monument?
Green and lush?
Tough and life?
Do you see what you can grow?
…Where…you can grow
Whatever you want to part the world beneath you with -
Say to the sun, lend me your power
Rain. Lend me your power.
Ground. Lend me your power.
To make this grow. Make me grow.
So what will you put here?
Seeds of chance?
Seeds of choice?
Because these will grow - if you would forget what you think you know
Choose
Choose to put in the ground
What you wish to become.

Community News You Can Use!
|
|
We take great pride in our community partnerships and view them as one more way to help provide resources for our community.
|
|
Senior Coastsiders is partnering with Peninsula Clean Energy to share information about important services and programs.
Who is Peninsula Clean Energy and what do they do?
Peninsula Clean Energy has been the community electricity provider for San Mateo County since 2016, providing clean electricity at lower rates. There’s nothing you have to do to reap the benefits, either- it’s an automatic benefit of living in San Mateo County. Peninsula Clean Energy works in collaboration with PG&E, buying electricity from clean sources but using PG&E's lines to deliver that clean electricity to your home. They provide clean energy from sources like the wind and sun, which helps protect the planet for our kids and future generations.
Say goodbye to gas with used EV rebates!
Electric vehicles (EVs) provide lasting benefits to individuals and the community at large. In addition to offering significantly lower operation and maintenance costs to drivers, EVs emit significantly less emissions than gasoline-powered cars.
That’s why Peninsula Clean Energy is helping San Mateo County and Los Banos residents go electric with rebates of up to $4,000 when they purchase a used EV. And income-qualified residents can save even more by combining additional offers from other state and local programs.

COVID-19 is still with us and it is important to remain vigilant about keeping yourself and others safe. Since the pandemic began, over 850,000 people aged 65 and over have died from COVID-19, representing 1 in 4 of deaths from the virus. COVID-19 vaccines are effective at protecting people from getting seriously ill, being hospitalized, and dying, but:
Only 43% of older adults have gotten the updated vaccine, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
People with disabilities report having difficulties in accessing the COVID-19 vaccine, such as not being able to get to vaccination sites, and those sites not being open at convenient times. As a result, only 39.7% of older adults with disabilities have received the latest COVID-19 vaccine.
Senior Coastsiders has received a grant from the National Council on Aging to provide 500 FREE Covid-19 and Flu shots to older adults living on the San Mateo County coast, and we will be hosting vaccination clinics in 2023 and early 2024. Stay tuned for information about our next clinic.
