A Note From Executive Director, Sandi Winter

The Economics of Aging:

Why Older Adults Matter to California

A new report from AARP, The Longevity Economy® Outlook 2026, puts a number on something Senior Coastsiders knows: older adults are a formidable economic engine.

Nationally, adults 50 and over generated $12.5 trillion in economic activity in 2024 - 43% of U.S. GDP. If that group were its own country, it would be the third-largest economy in the world, behind only the United States and China. They also supported 98 million jobs (46% of all U.S. employment) and paid nearly 60% of federal income taxes.

In California, the picture is just as striking. Older adults contributed $1.6 trillion to the state economy in 2024 - 39% of California's GDP - and that share is projected to grow to 43% by 2060. They supported 42% of the state's jobs and were responsible for 54 cents of every dollar spent statewide. By 2060, that will rise to 61 cents. Much of this contribution never shows up in a paycheck. In 2024, California's 50-plus population provided $21.2 billion in volunteer time and $83 billion in unpaid caregiving for adults - care that would otherwise fall to an already-stretched health and social services system.

AARP's researchers distilled the report's recommendations into six priority areas:

  • Make longer working lives productive, not precarious. Reduce age discrimination, expand access to training, and create structures that let people work on terms that work for them.
  • Treat age-ready housing as essential infrastructure. Accessible, adaptable housing must be part of every community's planning conversation.
  • Create products that help people live better as they age. Technology, healthcare tools, and consumer goods designed with older adults in mind represent enormous untapped market opportunity.
  • Invest more for an aging society. Both public and private capital must be directed toward the needs and opportunities this demographic shift creates.
  • Recognize unpaid and charitable contributions as essential economic drivers. Policy frameworks must account for and support the massive informal economy that older adults sustain.
  • Build a functioning care economy. The infrastructure of caregiving - paid and unpaid - is foundational to everything else, and it is currently underfunded and undervalued.

Senior Coastsiders already operates at the intersection

of these recommendations.

Our home repair program helps older adults stay safely in place rather than face costly relocation or institutional care. Our volunteer coordination and Pet Buddy program turn goodwill into organized, sustained support. Our care management, transportation, meal programs and classes and activities provide a coordinated system that improves physical, mental and social health and wellbeing. And our digital literacy program moves older adults toward the kind of technology adoption the report identifies as an untapped market opportunity.

The takeaway is simple. Older adults on the Coastside are contributors, taxpayers, volunteers and caregivers whose economic and social value is easy to overlook and expensive to lose. Investing in their independence makes good economic sense.

Did you know that age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss, affecting an estimated 20 million people in the United States alone? This condition impacts the macula—the part of the eye responsible for sharp, central vision—making everyday activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces more difficult. Common symptoms include blurred or distorted vision, dark or empty areas in the center of sight, and difficulty seeing in low light. While AMD does not cause complete blindness, early detection and support can make a meaningful difference.

Half Moon Bay Beach Safety Run: September 19, Pillar Point Harbor

2 Mile, 5K, and 10K courses

The Half Moon Bay Beach Safety Run benefits the Arunay Foundation, which is dedicated to preventing beach accidents and coastal drownings through education about sneaker waves, rip currents, and other hazardous ocean conditions. The foundation also works to equip local beaches with life rings and keep communities informed about dangerous weather.

Created to transform grief into purpose, the Arunay Foundation raises awareness of the often-overlooked dangers of sneaker waves, which claim more lives on the West Coast each year than all other weather-related hazards combined. Guided by Arunay’s light, the foundation’s mission is simple: to ensure every day at the beach ends with laughter—not loss.
