If you need meals, a shopper, a face mask, or anything else, call us and we will see what we can do! Read below to learn about other resources available to keep you safe AND busy and entertained!

We are proud to be partnering with the City and County to provide ongoing COVID-19 testing at Senior Coastsiders. This testing is available to anyone 55 and over and their caregivers. Registration is easy and the test is quick and efficient with results coming in 48-72 hours. Widespread testing is extremely important for curbing the spread of Covid and ensuring early treatment if infected. To learn more about the importance of testing, go to the NIH website at https://www.nia.nih.gov/news/why-covid-19-testing-key-getting-back-normal and to register for a test, call 650-726-9056 or go to https://curative.com/sites/10044. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Best wishes for the holiday season
from the Executive Director
As the end of the year draws near, I find myself recalling the family traditions we have practiced during holiday seasons of the past. These were quite different for our family when we lived in the Southern Hemisphere – it was the start of summer with long days and hot weather and the children were enjoying their summer school vacation. Around the end of the year, one of our family traditions has been to reflect back on the year to determine the three best and three worst things that we each experienced. The year we arrived in the United States, my daughter, who was in elementary school at the time, listed as one or her best things “I’m learning to play the flute”. By the end of the following year, the requirement to practice her flute every day resulted in “I have to play the flute every day” appearing on her worst list! It’s funny how our perspective is affected by time.
I have discovered that there is a time perspective1 theory that recognizes five types of time perspectives:

  1. Past positive people focus on the “good old days.” They may keep scrapbooks, collect photos, and look forward to celebrating traditional holidays.
  2. Past negative people focus on all the things that went wrong in the past: “it doesn’t matter what I do, my life will never change.”
  3. Present hedonistic people live in the moment – seeking pleasure, novelty, and sensation, and avoiding pain.
  4. Present fatalistic people feel that decisions are moot because predetermined fate plays the guiding role in life: “What will be, will be.”
  5. Future-oriented people plan for the future and trust that their decision will work out.

Every individual has a unique combination of time perspectives which affect our judgments, decisions and actions. Having the mental ability to switch between these perspectives as appropriate to meet the demands of any given situation has been associated with increases in well-being, mindfulness, self-esteem, life satisfaction, optimism and positive functioning. Which time perspective resonates with you? How will your time perspective affect your judgments, decisions and actions this holiday season?

Since moving to the United States, our family has gained new family traditions like celebrating Thanksgiving, and retained some of the old, like reflecting on our best and worst things from the year. I hope that even if your holiday season is different to what you’ve experienced in the past, you will be able to find meaning, inspiration, hope and goodness.
