Buddy was a baby in an orphanage who stowed away in Santa's sack and ended up at the North Pole. Later, as an adult who happened to be raised by elves, Santa allows him to go to New York City to find his birth father, Walter Hobbs. He, who is on Santa's naughty list for being a heartless jerk, had no idea that Buddy was even born. Buddy, meanwhile, experiences the delights of New York City (and human culture) as only an elf can. When Walter's relationship with him interferes with his job, he is forced to reevaluate his priorities. (Rated PG Running Time - 1h 37m)

NEW Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Line - 988 Similar to 911, this new, simplified tool will connect those in need with representatives specifically trained in the management of suicide risk and other mental health crises. One of the goals of the new number is to reduce the use of 911 for suicide and mental health crises, because calling 911 in such situations too often results in inadequate or inappropriate intervention by the police or unnecessary hospitalization or incarceration. This lifeline is critical for older adults and those living with a disability because such individuals are at greater risk for mental
health crises and suicide. If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health emergency, call 988.

Contemplative Practice for Resilience and Well-Being
|
|
Contemplative practice behaviors include activities such as meditation, prayer, breath awareness, gratitude, and compassion. There is substantial scientific evidence that contemplative practice behaviors provide physical and psychosocial health benefits. Contemplative practices have been shown to strengthen resilience, self-awareness, mindfulness, self-regulation and distress tolerance.
Translating this science into impact, Senior Coastsiders is pleased to offer a new series that will be delivered by content experts and is designed to build contemplative practice behaviors and promote resilience. These free sessions will occur monthly until April 2023 with some taking place via Zoom and others in person at Senior Coastsiders. A resource booklet will be developed to assist interested individuals in finding out more information about contemplative practices.

In addition, this study found a strong relationship between higher resilience and improved well-being. This study has just been published in an academic journal after having gone through a rigorous peer review process. If you would like to read the study, it can be accessed HERE.

A Note from the Executive Director, Sandi Winter
|
|
The holiday season is a time to be merry and bright – right? But what if the circumstances in which you find yourself make you feel anything but that? Here at Senior Coastsiders we are greatly saddened by the unexpected passing of Cara Schmaljohn who was the Executive Director of Senior Coastsiders for over 30 years between 1988 and 2019. Under Cara's leadership, the services and programs at Senior Coastsiders expanded from meal provision, transportation, and a few classes and activities, to include home repair, care management, and a growing volunteer program. One of Cara's greatest achievements was the capital campaign conducted in partnership with the Coastside Adult Day Health Center. This resulted in the construction of the Coastside Community Center in which both our organizations are now located and that also includes affordable housing for over 40 older adults. Other examples of partnerships that were forged under Cara’s leadership and that continue to have a tremendous impact on our community are those with No Strings Attached Breakfast and Table of Plenty – organizations that use our commercial kitchen to provide additional meals to our community. So much of what Cara accomplished was due to her approach of saying “yes” to new opportunities and partnerships. We are in the planning phase of a Celebration of Life for Cara that will be held at Senior Coastsiders in January.
Reasons why we may not be feeling jolly this holiday season could include stresses due to family commitments, financial worries, the loss of a loved one, loneliness or social isolation, and poor health, to name a few. If you feel sad you are not alone! Doctors and mental health professionals have been documenting patterns of increased rates of depression during the holidays for years. Some tips to prevent holiday stress and depression from the Mayo Clinic[1] include:
Acknowledge your feelings - if you can't be with loved ones, realize that it's normal to feel sadness and grief.
Reach out - if you feel lonely or isolated, try seeking out community for support and companionship. This edition of The Beacon has a variety of in person and on-line opportunities that can help boost your physical, mental, and social well-being.
Volunteer - doing something that helps others is a good way to lift your spirits and broaden your friendships. At Senior Coastsiders we depend on over 200 volunteers who participate in a variety of activities – contact the office for more information.
Be realistic - the holidays don't have to be perfect or just like last year. To celebrate, hold on to a few traditions and rituals from the past and be open to creating new ones.
Set aside differences - try to accept family members and friends as they are and be understanding if they get upset or distressed when something goes awry – they too may be feeling the effects of holiday stress and depression.
Stick to a budget- before you do your gift and food shopping, decide how much you can afford to spend and stick to your budget.
Plan ahead – during the weeks ahead you could have too many obligations and social engagements that leave you feeling exhausted or have nothing on your calendar which could leave you feeling isolated and lonely. Planning ahead can help you respond appropriately.
Maintain healthy habits – make one healthy choice each meal; get plenty of sleep; be active; practice contemplative behaviors, and avoid excessive tobacco, alcohol, and drug use.
Take a breather – make some time for yourself. Find an activity you enjoy. Take a break by yourself. Spending just 15 minutes alone, without distractions, may refresh you enough to handle everything you need to do.
Seek professional help if you need it – if you find yourself feeling persistently sad or anxious, plagued by physical complaints, unable to sleep, irritable and hopeless, and unable to face routine chores then talk to your doctor or a mental health professional.
As for me, when sadness and anxiety threaten to overwhelm me I’m going to draw on a lifetime of happy memories and consciously practice gratitude – for a meaningful job that improves the quality of life of others; the amazing people I work with; my family – particularly the wonder I see in my granddaughter’s eyes as she experiences this holiday season as a 1-year old; for my health, and for close friends. And this year, also for Cara and the legacy she left us.
Take care and remember that we’re here for you if you need us.
Sandi

In a society where aging is oftentimes equated with ill health and vulnerability, it is important to remember that societal preconceptions cannot define us, and each one of us can write our own story of aging. The world is full of people who had some of their finest moments only after they became seniors. Here is a story of another Unstoppable Senior, Mildred Lisette Norman, also known as Peace Pilgrim.
Born in 1908, Mildred grew up among a close-knit extended family on a poultry farm in Egg City, NJ. Following an unhappy marriage, she embarked on a personal transition that culminated with her hiking the entire length of the Appalachian Trail (2050 miles!), becoming the first woman to do so. During this time, Mildred had a spiritual awakening that guided the rest of her life. Relinquishing her name and possessions, she changed her name to Peace Pilgrim and on January 1, 1953 wearing a blue tunic with her new name printed across the front, she began a journey for peace that touched the lives of many thousands of people.
Although she wasn’t technically a “senior” in 1953, what made Peace Pilgrim an Unstoppable Senior is that for the next 28 years, until her accidental death at age 72, she crisscrossed North America on foot, walking joyfully for more than 25,000 miles on her pilgrimage for peace. Wearing a blue tunic and carrying just a few possessions in her pockets, she shared her simple but profound message in thousands of communities. She belonged to no organization, and walked until given shelter and fasted until given food, “I can truthfully tell you that without ever asking I have been supplied with everything needed for my journey, which shows you just how good people are.”
“All of us can work for peace. We can work right where we are, right within ourselves, because the more peace we have within our own lives, the more we can reflect into the outer situation.”
