NEW Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Line - 988 Similar to 911, this new, simplified tool will connect those in need with representatives specifically trained in the management of suicide risk and other mental health crises. One of the goals of the new number is to reduce the use of 911 for suicide and mental health crises, because calling 911 in such situations too often results in inadequate or inappropriate intervention by the police or unnecessary hospitalization or incarceration. This lifeline is critical for older adults and those living with a disability because such individuals are at greater risk for mental
health crises and suicide. If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health emergency, call 988.

Contemplative Practice for Resilience and Well-Being
|
|
Contemplative practice behaviors include activities such as meditation, prayer, breath awareness, gratitude, and compassion. There is substantial scientific evidence that contemplative practice behaviors provide physical and psychosocial health benefits. Contemplative practices have been shown to strengthen resilience, self-awareness, mindfulness, self-regulation and distress tolerance.
Translating this science into impact, Senior Coastsiders is pleased to offer a dynamic series delivered by content experts and designed to build contemplative practice behaviors and promote resilience. These free sessions occur monthly through May 2023 with some taking place via Zoom and others in person at Senior Coastsiders. A resource booklet will be developed to assist interested individuals in finding out more information about contemplative practices.
Session 7 Gratitude and Loving Kindness - Tuesday, February 28 from 4:00-5:00PM - via Zoom
As research shows, mindfulness and other meditative practices are supportive for health, stress reduction, and general well-being. Loving Kindness Meditation, derived from traditional Buddhist practices, has been shown to support people who are addressing pain, chronic disease, and other acute medical issues, by increasing their sense of emotional regulation, friendliness toward themselves, and an increase in positive emotions like awe, contentment, hope, love, and joy. During this class, you will learn the tenets of Loving Kindness practice, and how to apply it to the conditions of your life.
Nichole Proffitt, SEP, CMT-P, teaches Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness-based programs at the UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Health. Additionally, Nichole is a trained Somatic Experiencing and trauma therapy practitioner and works in private practice offering trauma-informed and mindfulness-based counseling to clients addressing a range of wellness issues, including acute anxiety and stress, addiction recovery, healing from trauma, chronic illness, and grief and loss. She also teaches workshops and retreats and offers mindfulness-based programs at various institutions and organizations throughout the Bay Area.
Please register HERE or call or stop by the Senior Coastsiders office.

- Session 10 Mind-Body Centering, Tuesday, May 9, 4:00-5:00PM (In-person)
In a study conducted among older adults right here on the Coast, individuals who reported high levels of resilience had long held behaviors of contemplative practices that helped them effectively adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, this study found a strong relationship between higher resilience and improved well-being. This study has just been published in an academic journal after having gone through a rigorous peer review process. If you would like to read the study, it can be accessed HERE.

A Note from the Executive Director, Sandi Winter
|
|
2023 has started very badly for the Coastside – first the storms and the terrible damage and disruption they caused, and then the tragic killing of seven farmworkers and the wounding of another at two separate sites. This tragedy also brought to light the deplorable living conditions of workers and their families on these two farms. National, state, and local leaders have pledged their commitment to address these conditions and community-based organizations have worked together to support the victims. This includes Senior Coastsiders. Our Mandarin and Cantonese Community Liaison was able to provide immediate and on-going assistance to the displaced Chinese farm workers who speak and understand almost no English, and our commercial kitchen has been used by our team and the Table of Plenty to prepare meals for the Chinese and Latino victims.
These events, added to the upheaval we’ve all experienced over the last couple of years due to the COVID pandemic, can feel overwhelming. At times like these it can be important to focus on what you can control. Are there actions you can take that might improve the situation for those affected by the shootings? This might include making a financial donation, volunteering your time, or donating goods and services. Are there actions you can take that might help you cope with your own feelings? This might include doing things that are meaningful to you and make you happy, staying active, spending time with supportive loved ones and trusted friends, or accessing professional mental health resources.
As usual, this month The Beacon is full of activities designed to promote the physical, mental, and social well-being of older Coastside adults. I encourage you to participate – stop by the office for more details.
Take care.
Sandi
PS. I will be out of the office for much of February as I will be going to New Zealand for a family vacation – six families will be represented on the trip with 17 people ranging in age from 15 months to 87 years coming from the USA, South Africa, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. It will be quite an adventure!
