July 2020

Taste of the Coast has always been an event where folks gather to sample unique offerings from our local restaurants, farms, distilleries and wineries. This year, we'll be sending our guests directly to our local businesses! Tickets will be sold on our website and ticket holders will be able to go to participating businesses to claim their "taste of the Coast" directly. This is a real win-win; we'll raise funds to support our programs while driving critically needed traffic to our partners. We'll even have a specially priced ticket for seniors! Stay tuned!
Due to COVID-19, the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival has been cancelled BUT the 42nd ANNUAL PUMPKIN RUN WILL GO ON! We are excited to announce our first ever
VIRTUAL RACE!

Please join us in running or walking this year’s races as part of our virtual race family! Sign up to run, or walk, the 5K, 10K or Half-Marathon. All distances can be run or walked during the event period, Monday, October 12 through Sunday, October 25 from wherever you are at whatever time is convenient!

Go to www.seniorcoastsiders.org to register!
With the recent changes to the county shelter-in-place rules, Senior Coastsiders is examining how we will re-open our dining facility when the time comes. We know many in our community are ready to venture out, while others will want to stay in and we hope to accommodate the wishes of both groups. Please complete this short survey . This will help inform our decisions for re-opening our dining room. Feel free to call our office to discuss these issues with us at any time. (650) 726-9056.

Join Denise Krauss on Thursday July 9 and/or Tuesday July 21 at 3:00 pm for an exploration into Our New Normal : wearing masks, wiping down groceries, staying home, flattening the virus curve. What is it that we DO NOT like about our New Normal? Why, as human beings, are we resistant to our New Normal? Why not accept it as our Current Normal and work with it? What would a New Normal for the Future look like? Let’s talk about our New Normal and what we want to see as our Future Normal. Contact Denise at denise@extraordinaryyou.us for your Zoom invitation. See you there!

Creativity Corner - Have you discovered new creative juices flowing since the Shelter-In-Place? What have you been doing to keep busy? We'd love to hear about it and possibly do a story about it! This might be gardening, writing, drawing, painting, singing - whatever new or re-discovered hobby that you've really jumped into! Call 650-726-9056 or email hatmore@seniorcoastsiders.org.

AARP Tax Appointments - AARP Foundation Tax-Aide and our community partners are assessing coronavirus (COVID-19) developments on a daily basis to ensure that all CDC guidelines for health and safety are being followed to protect volunteers, staff and you – the people we serve.

Although AARP Foundation Tax-Aide in-person service continues to be suspended, they are now able to offer options that allow you to file your tax returns at no cost with assistance from IRS-certified volunteers if needed. These options eliminate physical contact and document exchange while maintaining the security of your personal information. You will need access to a computer to use these options.
  • Online self-preparation using Free File Alliance software from TurboTax or OnLine Taxes. Eligibility requirements differ for each package – click this website for details and links to the software.
  • Or, if you have not decided which online software package to use, AARP recommends this tax software – essentially the same software used at their sites. Their normal IRS-specified scope limits do apply to the use of this software.

If you need support as you prepare your return, either option includes free access to volunteer assistance through the Tax-Aide “Help Desk”. A link to the help request is included in the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide website in the above link labeled “website”. Please note that AARP cannot enter information into the software – you must self-prepare your return.

Our young friends at Sea Crest School have formed a group called Roots and Shoots that they hope will be a virtual meeting space for students and older Coastside adults. It is a place for students to practice reading aloud, share creative ideas and crafts, or just spread some news with our Coastside seniors. Their hope is that seniors will also share with them and that is where you come in! Do you have a story to share? It can be written and submitted by email to ashandley@seacrestschool.org , or if you prefer to do a recorded video via Zoom, that can be arranged with Hope at Senior Coastsiders, hatmore@seniorcoastsiders.org or call 650-726-9056 for more details. Check out their student designed website at Roots and Shoots and learn more about the students who are eager to share with Coastside seniors!

Zoom If you are still wondering what the heck Zoom is and thinking it is time you find out, here are a few great tutorials from the Institute for Successful Longevity:

Speaking of Zoom, did you know that you can join a Zoom meeting from your smart phone in addition to a computer, laptop, or tablet? And did you know that Zoom isn't just for classes and presentations but is used by friends to stay in touch? And honestly, you don't event need to have an account, it can be as simple as clicking on the link sent by the host! We know that a lot of people are missing the interactions that they normally get during lunch in our dining room and so we would like to help bring our friends back together - at least digitally. Our plan is to create some virtual lunch tables (and yes, you can save seats) so that you can see and chat with your friends as we continue to shelter in place. If you are interested in participating, please contact our office at 650-726-9056 or by emailing hatmore@seniorcoastsiders.org
