Hello! My name is Darcy Soares, and I am the new Program Manager here at Senior Coastsiders.
I have worked in the hospitality industry for over 15 years and my passion for customer service and assisting people has led me to a career here at Coastsiders. I spent over 8 years at sea working for Disney Cruise Line where I attended their elite management and hospitality programs. Transitioning to land, I worked for The Golden State Warriors as part of the inaugural team at the beautiful new Chase Center in San Francisco. As the ADA Manager for Chase Center, I was able to assist guests with their special requests to ensure that everyone who entered Chase Center would have an unforgettable experience.
Hope and the team have been working behind the scenes to help ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible and I look forward to meeting you all.

The beds are shared and are meant not only to provide nourishment to community members but also serve as a place to relax and get one's hands a little dirty. Anyone is welcome to harvest from the garden, regardless of participation. If you are interested in helping plant, maintain, and oversee the new garden beds and help develop our composting system, please email Rose at rhernandez@seniorcoastsiders.org

Pay-What-You-Can Night at Coastal Repertory Theater
Bright Star is a musical written and composed by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. It is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in 1945–46 with flashbacks to 1923. Inspired by a true story and featuring the Tony®-nominated score by Martin and Brickell, Broadway’s BRIGHT STAR tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ’40s. When literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past—and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives. With beautiful melodies and powerfully moving characters, the story unfolds as a rich tapestry of deep emotion. An uplifting theatrical journey that holds you tightly in its grasp, BRIGHT STAR is as refreshingly genuine as it is daringly hopeful.
Pay-What-You-Can Night is Thursday, August 3. No reservation required, donations appreciated! More information can be found at www.coastalrep.com

Thank you for supporting
Senior Coastsiders
|
|
This month we are highlighting two groups of individuals that have supported us with the wonderful gifts of their time and enthusiasm. Firstly, June 3rd was our 32nd annual home repair day. This event is so meaningful – for both the participants and the volunteers. This year we worked on many homes carrying out tasks like replacing and reinforcing stair and deck railings, installing grab bars, removing vegetation to improve access to the front door, and replacing smoke detectors. These projects are always about increasing safety and accessibility so that older adults can remain independently in their homes for as long as possible.
Secondly, we had a wonderful group of volunteers from Commonwealth Financial who spent an afternoon painting our dining room. It looks amazing!
Thank you to all those involved – your dedication has made a real impact!

A note from Executive Director, Sandi Winter
|
|
Hello everyone!
What an exciting day it’s been today. We took delivery of our long-awaited van. It can carry 10 passengers and is fitted with a wheelchair lift.
Nabor Huerta, a local Half Moon Bay resident with many years of experience, will be our driver.
Reliable transportation is a social determinant of
health, in other words, a factor that significantly
influences people’s health, wellbeing, and quality of life. Transportation is a critical support for older
adults to access community services and visit family and friends. The absence of reliable transportation could result in poorer health and higher isolation rates.
Our van will bring participants to the center each weekday so they
can attend classes and activities and eat lunch. It will return them
to their homes at the end of the day. We will also use the van to
take participants to NewLeaf and Safeway on Fridays to go grocery shopping.

Community News You Can Use!

We take great pride in our community partnerships and view them as one more way to help provide resources for our community.

Senior Coastsiders is partnering with Peninsula Clean Energy to share information about important services and programs.
Who is Peninsula Clean Energy and what do they do?
Peninsula Clean Energy has been the community electricity provider for San Mateo County since 2016, providing clean electricity at lower rates. There’s nothing you have to do to reap the benefits, either- it’s an automatic benefit of living in San Mateo County. Peninsula Clean Energy works in collaboration with PG&E, buying electricity from clean sources but using PG&E's lines to deliver that clean electricity to your home. They provide clean energy from sources like the wind and sun, which helps protect the planet for our kids and future generations.
Solar + Battery Backup System + $500 Rebate!
Solar energy is clean and can lower the cost of energy. When backup batteries are included, they can keep the lights on even during power outages due to storms, fires, or other causes. Peninsula Clean Energy, the community electricity provider for San Mateo County and the City of Los Banos, is offering $500 for residents for solar + battery backup systems. They are working with Sunrun to implement the program. Sunrun will design, install, and maintain the solar electric system and backup batteries. The panels charge the batteries by day and provide you with power in the case of grid shutdown.
In addition to lower energy costs and more secure power during outages, you will be helping the environment. You will be part of a community electricity storage network that is helping us move toward 100% renewable energy.

The Community Assessment Survey for Older Adults Set for July 2023
The San Mateo County Area Agency on Aging (SMC AAA) and the California Department of Aging (CDA) needs input from the older adult community!
This summer, residents ages 55 and over will have the opportunity to complete The Community Assessment Survey for Older Adults (CASOA). Feedback provided on this survey will help the SMC AAA and the CDA better understand the contributions that adults 55 make to their communities, as well as the needs they have and challenges they experience. These survey results will help us ensure that
our policies and programs align with our residents’ values.
The survey will launch in July, with 3,200 randomly selected households receiving a postcard invitation to take the survey online. A week later, these same residents will receive a printed survey in the mail with a postage-paid return envelope. Please watch for these invitations in your mailbox and take a few minutes to respond!
Your feedback will directly influence the decisions and plans of local government, foundations, the SMC AAA, nonprofits serving the aging population, and other organizations serving our community. Eligible residents who are not randomly selected for this initial survey effort will be able to participate next month, when the survey opens to the entire community on August 14th. The SMC AAA and the CDA will share the link to access the survey later.
The survey results will help in the development of the SMC Area Agency on Aging Area Plan for Older Adults and Adults with Disabilities for 2024-2028 and help to direct the Older Americans Act funding priorities.
This survey is conducted in partnership with Polco, an online civic engagement platform that enables residents to provide direct input to local government decision-making processes. Participants’ responses are anonymous, and personal data or identifying information are never shared. Your privacy is important to us! Learn more about Polco here and see their Privacy Policy here. If you have any questions about the survey or Polco, please call 916-970-9948.
