| | A Note From Executive Director, Sandi Winter | | Built to Last: Reflections on Independence, Community, and 50 Years of Senior Coastsiders | | |
This July, America turns 250. It's a milestone that invites reflection — not just on history, but on the values that have carried a nation forward across two and a half centuries. And as we look ahead to our own 50th anniversary next year, we find ourselves thinking about what we share with that original, enduring endeavor.
The founders who drafted the Constitution were trying to solve a hard problem: how do you build something that holds people together, protects the most vulnerable, and still leaves room for everyone to live freely? They weren't just writing law. They were making a promise — that the measure of a community is how it cares for all
its members.
Senior Coastsiders was founded on a version of that same promise.
When our doors opened in 1977, the Coastside was — and in many ways still is — a community that asks a lot of the people who call it home. The beauty is real, but so is the isolation. The cost of living is high. Services are far. For older adults especially, staying here, staying independent, staying connected requires more than good intentions. It requires infrastructure. It requires people who show up.
That's what we've done for nearly five decades.
The Preamble to the Constitution speaks of promoting the general welfare and securing the blessings of liberty and happiness. Liberty, for an 80-year-old in Montara without a car, looks like our driver Nabor bringing them to the center so they can get connected to programs and services. The general welfare, for a neighbor who lives alone, looks like a hot meal served in our dining room and someone who notices when you don't come in. The pursuit of happiness, for someone who never thought they'd take a dance class, looks like a Tuesday afternoon at
Pack Dance Studio.
These aren't small things. They are, we believe, exactly what both documents
had in mind. As America reflects on 250 years of working — imperfectly, persistently — toward its founding ideals, we're proud to be part of that work on this small and beautiful stretch of coast. And as we approach our own 50th year, we're grateful to every volunteer, donor, partner, and participant who has helped us keep the promise.
The work continues and our team of staff and volunteers are delighted to do it!
Sandi

Your Donations Make a Real Difference!
Monthly giving is one of the most impactful ways to support Senior Coastsiders. Consistent contributions allow us to plan ahead, respond to need, and sustain the programs our Coastside community depends on.
In the last 12 months we’ve received just over $10,000 from 23 generous monthly donors. We're so grateful for this ongoing commitment. If you’d like to make a monthly gift, you can visit our website at seniorcoastsiders.org and on the Donate page,

We Want Your Memories!
Senior Coastsiders turns 50 in 2027 — and we want to celebrate with the people who made us who we are.
Do you have a photo, a story, or a memory from your time with Senior Coastsiders? Maybe it's a meal shared with a friend you met at the dining room, a driver who became a familiar face, or a program that made a difference at just the right moment.
We're collecting memories from participants, volunteers, staff, and community members past and present to create a historical timeline of our first 50 years on the Coast.
We'd love to receive:
- Photos (any era — the older the better!)
- Short stories or memories in your own words
- Names of people or programs you remember
Please drop off photos at 925 Main Street or
email them to swinter@seniorcoastsiders.org.

Did you know that age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss, affecting an estimated 20 million people in the United States alone? This condition impacts the macula—the part of the eye responsible for sharp, central vision—making everyday activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces more difficult. Common symptoms include blurred or distorted vision, dark or empty areas in the center of sight, and difficulty seeing in low light. While AMD does not cause complete blindness, early detection and support can make a meaningful difference.
