I say goodbye...and they say hello!
After seven amazing years as program manager at Senior Coastsiders, I will be pursuing a new professional opportunity in El Granada as the assistant general manager with the Granada Community Services District (GCSD). I will transition to part-time the week of 6/12 with my final day at Senior Coastsiders on 6/23. My time at Senior Coastsiders has been fulfilling both professionally and personally and I value the relationships and friendships I have made along the way. Thank you all for making my time at Senior Coastsiders so very special.

As I prepare to leave, I'm thrilled to introduce you to Rose Hernandez, and Mary Jane and Scott Hamilton. Rose will serve as our new Activities Coordinator as we increase our offerings into the afternoons and evenings. Mary Jane and Scott are a dynamic duo who are re-envisioning our Home Repair Program.
Here's a note from Rose: Hello, my name is Rose and I am the newest member of Senior Coastsiders! I was recently laid off from a job I held for 35 years and found myself searching for a new career. I am blessed to have found a home at Senior Coastsiders as the new Activities Coordinator. I look forward to meeting you all!
Mary Jane and Scott Hamilton are lifelong Coastside residents who love being involved in their community. Mary Jane's administrative prowess and Scott's career as a licensed contractor make them the perfect pair to move Senior Coastsiders' home repair program in a new direction. The focus will be on year-round work and more immediate assistance for older adults seeking help to remain safely in their homes.

We are currently seeking a new program manager - please spread the word and steer candidates toward our website!

New and Upcoming!
Trivia Hour - NEW DAYS!
Test your brain and meet up with friends for Trivia Day at Senior Coastsiders. Our trivia master is Larry De Young, a long-time Coastside resident, who wants you to get those “Little Grey Cells” working. Larry formulates excellent questions with the support of fantastic slides, a timer, and score sheet. His questions will have your synapses snapping! Grab a smart friend or two to form a team - or join a team when you arrive. If you win, you'll enjoy...bragging rights! NEW SCHEDULE - first Monday (in the Dining Room) and third Wednesday (in the Media Room) of each month at 1:00PM (June 5 and 21 this month).
Improvements at the center We are very grateful to Commonwealth Financial Network who have chosen Senior Coastsiders for their service project this year. Volunteers will be at our center on Wednesday June 14th putting up a much needed fresh coat of paint in the dining room and sunroom. Because of this, regular programming in those rooms is cancelled for the day. We will, however, be providing a bagged lunch that can be picked up at the center. Diners will come through the lobby and grab their lunch in the Media Room and exit to the patio.

Community Garden Meeting If you haven't yet seen the new garden beds at the south end of the building, be sure to check them out! Through a grant from the San Mateo County Office of Sustainability, Senior Coastsiders has installed raised planter beds, a new walkway, and multiple plants for our very own community garden! Interested gardeners are invited to our first community garden meeting to be held on Tuesday, June 6 at 3:00PM in the dining room and garden area. We are looking for individuals who are interested in helping plant, maintain, and oversee the new garden beds and help develop our composting system at the south end of the building. We will discuss plans and create a committee and watering schedule. The beds are shared and are meant not only to provide nourishment to community members but also serve as a place to relax and get one's hands a little dirty. If you can't attend the meeting but are interested in helping with the garden, please email [email protected].
Speaking of the garden Do you have extra pots? The garden could really use some large terracotta pots for tomatoes and vining green beans. If you would like to donate, please contact Rose at [email protected]

Let's all go to the movies! This month we are taking on a more serious topic with a special evening screening of The Quiet Epidemic, As Close as Your Backyard. We will be joined by local Lyme Disease advocate, Steve Diers, for a pre-screening presentation. Steve is a Retired Ranger/Naturalist of 39 years and will focus his talk on protecting yourself from tick bite(s) and the challenges of getting an accurate
diagnosis and competent care if you should contract Lyme disease. Following the presentation, we will screen the award winning documentary, The Quiet Epidemic, As Close as Your Backyard. "After years of living with mysterious symptoms, a young girl from Brooklyn and a Duke University scientist are diagnosed with a disease said to not exist: Chronic Lyme disease. The Quiet Epidemic follows their search for answers, which lands them in the middle of a vicious medical debate. What begins as a patient story evolves into an investigation into the history of Lyme disease, dating back to its discovery in 1975. A paper trail of suppressed scientific research, and buried documents reveals why ticks-and the diseases they carry-have been allowed to quietly spread around the globe." (imdb) Presentation and screening - Tuesday, June 13.

  • 6:00PM Doors open
  • 6:15PM Presentation by Steve Diers
  • 7:00PM Break

Senior Preview Night This is the enduring tale of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. In the rigid theocracy of Salem, rumors that women are practicing witchcraft galvanize the town's most basic fears and suspicions; and when a young girl accuses Elizabeth Proctor of being a witch, self-righteous church leaders and townspeople insist that Elizabeth be brought to trial. The ruthlessness of the prosecutors and the eagerness of neighbor to testify against neighbors brilliantly illuminates the destructive power of socially sanctioned violence. Senior Preview night is Thursday, June 15. Doors open at 7:00PM, show starts at 7:30PM. No reservation required, donations appreciated! Coastal Repertory Theater, 1167 Main Street.

Thank you for joining with us to support successful aging.
A note from Executive Director, Sandi Winter
To quote Benjamin Franklin “Change is the only constant in life. One’s ability to adapt to those changes will determine your success in life.” We have some changes coming to Senior Coastsiders!

As I’m sure most of you will know by now, our wonderful program manager and volunteer coordinator, Hope Atmore, is leaving us to take another professional position. Hope has given Senior Coastsiders seven years of incredible service. Although we are sad to see her go, we wish her everything of the best in her future. Senior Coastsiders is undoubtedly a better place because of Hope – as I’m sure all our class participants and volunteers will attest! I hope you will join us to say farewell at a reception we will be having in the dining room on her last day, Friday June 23rd, starting at 1 pm.

Change is unsettling but I firmly believe it creates opportunities and I’m excited to see what the future holds for us. We have a great team here at Senior Coastsiders and we have strategically positioned ourselves to manage this type of change by cross training existing staff members; outsourcing specialized tasks such as special events and key components of Hope’s job to professionals; and ensuring that our systems and processes are well documented and shared between team members. In addition, Hope has generously agreed to an extended notice period to allow for the transfer of organizational information.

In addition to hiring for Hope’s position we are hiring a bus driver because - after a long delay - our new wheelchair accessible van will be arriving soon – example photo shown below. The van will be used to transport participants to and from our center, to local grocery stores and on special trips and outings. This is something our participants have requested since the first day I began working at Senior Coastsiders and I’m very happy to finally make this a reality.

If you have ideas of changes we can make at Senior Coastsiders to improve our programs and services, please let me know.

Sending you best wishes.
Sandi
