Through a grant provided by the County of San Mateo Office of Sustainability (OOS), we will soon have raised (ADA accessible) planter beds, fruit trees and edible shrubs, and an area for compost. And to get us started, staff from the OOS will be on site on Saturday, May 20 from 12:30-2:30 for a composting workshop! Come learn how easy and fun it is to recycle your fruit and vegetable scraps, leaves, and plant cuttings into compost in this free workshop! Workshop will teach composting options suitable for those with or without a backyard. Apartment dwellers welcome! Contemplative Practice for Resilience and Well-Being
|
|
Contemplative practice behaviors include activities such as meditation, prayer, breath awareness, gratitude, and compassion. There is substantial scientific evidence that contemplative practice behaviors provide physical and psychosocial health benefits. Contemplative practices have been shown to strengthen resilience, self-awareness, mindfulness, self-regulation and distress tolerance.
Translating this science into impact, Senior Coastsiders is pleased to offer a dynamic series delivered by content experts and designed to build contemplative practice behaviors and promote resilience. These free sessions occur monthly through May 2023 with some taking place via Zoom and others in person at Senior Coastsiders. A resource booklet will be developed to assist interested individuals in finding out more information about contemplative practices.
Session 10 (LAST SESSION OF THE SERIES) Mind Body Centering, Tuesday, May 9, 4:00-5:00PM - via ZOOM
Body Mind Centering® is a somatic movement technique that uses gentle movements, anatomy, metaphorical images, breath, and touch to create body awareness. During this session, you will learn and practice exercises and explorations to improve body awareness, spine mobility, and posture. This session will be led by Diana Lara, MS, RSMT. She has been using somatic practices for more than 20 years and is certified in developmental movement and yoga from the School of Body-Mind Centering®. She teaches Tai Chi for arthritis and a 10-week program on spine mobility and posture at On Lok 30th Street Senior Center (www.dianalara-somatics.com).
Instructions for participants:
If you can, please arrange for the following prior to the start of the session:
-
Access to a chair (without arms) and a small inflatable "Gertie" ball (approximately 8 inches in diameter) like the one here: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Original-Gertie-Ball-Pack-of-3/547364738 . A small pillow will also work.
- Make sure you have enough space to move your arms in all directions. Have a small area (5x4 feet) clear of clutter where you can walk.
- Wear comfortable clothes. You can practice the exercises barefoot or with shoes.
You must pre-register HERE to ensure you get the Zoom link. If you are unable to access Zoom at home, you can come to the center to connect on our large screen TV.
In a study conducted among older adults right here on the Coast, individuals who reported high levels of resilience had long held behaviors of contemplative practices that helped them effectively adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, this study found a strong relationship between higher resilience and improved well-being. This study has just been published in an academic journal after having gone through a rigorous peer review process. If you would like to read the study, it can be accessed HERE.

A note from Executive Director, Sandi Winter
|
|
I’m writing this article while at the Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM) annual conference which this year is being held in Phoenix, Arizona – it’s hot here!! Behavioral medicine is an interdisciplinary field concerned with the development and integration of behavioral, psychosocial, and biomedical knowledge and techniques that are used to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases. I presented information about our Age Friendly Half Moon Bay Coastside (AF HMBC) work. Numerous studies have found that age-friendly community interventions contribute to positive health outcomes, especially with regards to older adults’ functional abilities and cognitive functioning.
Members of the AF HMBC Coalition are tackling several unmet needs that have been identified by older adults in our community in the domains of health services, housing, social inclusion, and outdoor spaces. For example,
- substantial progress has been made in bringing together a group of influencers and decision makers who are exploring how to improve access to healthcare for all Coastsiders.
-
the Coalition is hosting a Senior Housing Resource Fair at Senior Coastsidders on May 22nd during which experts will answer questions and share housing related information and resources.
- Senior Coastsiders has partnered with La Costa Adult School to provide English as a Second Language classes for our older Chinese adults.
- Senior Coastsiders is in the process of constructing a community garden at the south end of our facility that will be wheelchair/walker accessible and have raised vegetable beds.
One of the sessions I attended at the SBM conference was about promoting physical activity among older adults. The speakers noted that only 15% of men and 10% of women aged 65 and older meet the recommended physical activity guidelines. This is despite all the physical and mental health benefits that are known to be associated with being active. For substantial health benefits the recommendations are that older adults do
- 150 to 300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity, or 75 to 100 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, preferably spread throughout the week.
- muscle-strengthening activities of moderate or greater intensity and that involve all major muscle groups on 2 or more days a week.
- balance training
- stretching activities that help maintain flexibility.
More simply put, we should all move more and sit less throughout the day. Some physical activity is better than none. Senior Coastsiders offers a wonderful variety of physical activity opportunities of differing types and intensity levels that I encourage you to try out.
Sending you best wishes.
Sandi

Community News You Can Use!
|
|
We take great pride in our community partnerships and view them as one more way to help provide resources for our community.
|
|
Senior Coastsiders is partnering with Peninsula Clean Energy to share information about important services and programs.
Who is Peninsula Clean Energy and what do they do?
Peninsula Clean Energy has been the community electricity provider for San Mateo County since 2016, providing clean electricity at lower rates. There’s nothing you have to do to reap the benefits, either- it’s an automatic benefit of living in San Mateo County. Peninsula Clean Energy works in collaboration with PG&E, buying electricity from clean sources but using PG&E's lines to deliver that clean electricity to your home. They provide clean energy from sources like the wind and sun, which helps protect the planet for our kids and future generations.
Say goodbye to gas with used EV rebates!
Electric vehicles (EVs) provide lasting benefits to individuals and the community at large. In addition to offering significantly lower operation and maintenance costs to drivers, EVs emit significantly less emissions than gasoline-powered cars. That’s why Peninsula Clean Energy is helping San Mateo County and Los Banos residents go electric with rebates of up to $4,000 when they purchase a used EV. And income-qualified residents can save even more by combining additional offers from other state and local programs.
