A huge congratulations and thank you goes out to all of our 2020 Virtual Pumpkin Run participants. Way to get it done - and for a great cause! We had over 200 participants racing virtually - with 11 participants completing the Trifecta (5K, 10K, and half marathon) during the two week period. People participated from all over the country as well as Canada, and even as far away as Germany and New Zealand!
Events like this keep Senior Coastsiders running!

A Note from the Executive Director

Time Marches On
Hello everyone,
As I write this section for the November edition of The Beacon we are on the verge of turning our clocks back an hour. This marks the end of Daylight Savings Time for this year. Even more importantly, we are a few days away from the 2020 elections. By the time you read this, the election will be over. Time moves on inexorably and soon 2020 will be behind us.
|
|
For many, the myriad stressful events of this year - the COVID-19 pandemic, wildfires, poor air quality, struggles with structural racism and inequality, and anxiety about the elections - appear to have affected our sense of time. Research suggests that scary or stressful experiences tend to feel longer because they demand more of our mental resources. Another theory for why stressful periods may feel longer has to do with our innate biological clock that ticks at a regular pace. In calm moments our biological clock ticks at a slow pace but anxiety or fear makes that essential rhythm tick faster which makes time feel longer. The disruption of our usual routines and schedules could also impact our sense of time. [1] Of course, sheltering at home gives us so much more time to dwell on things.
There are a few things we can try to remedy this situation: keep busy, even with simple tasks such as calling a friend or family member or going for a walk; put some structure in our days, because regular habits can keep our sleep cycles functioning smoothly, and problem-solve small issues as that might help us cope with bigger uncertainties. It might help to keep in mind this saying by the visionary automaker for Ford and Chrysler, Lee Iacocca, “In times of great stress or adversity, it is always best to keep busy and to plow your anger and your energy into something positive.”
Keep well.
Sandi

Sometimes it can feel like nothing is going your way! Between the pandemic, politics, wild fires, and ash falling from the sky, it can be hard to keep your spirits up. But, there is always something to be thankful for- even if it's just the birds singing or a smile from a stranger.
Author, Debbie Gisonni wrote the book, "The Goddess of Happiness" to help anyone feel happier through their intentions, thoughts and actions. Combining actionable steps, affirmations and new perspectives, Gisonni explores 44 separate ways to bring more joy into your life, including "Stop the Noise," "Indulge," "Lighten up," and "Give up guilt." If you would like one of these books, Gisonni donated 30 to Senior Coastsiders and we would be happy to make one available, while supplies last!
