The game is a fun way to bring people together and talk about complex issues and learn some of the adaptation solutions that everyone can implement.

There will be an informational table outside of the lunchroom from 11:45AM to12:15PM on Tuesday, November 15, and the City will facilitate the Lotería game starting at 12:15PM. Let's all go to the movies! We'll provide the popcorn and the film, you just need to be entertained. Each month, we roll down the big screen in the dining room for a feature film (some old, some new). This month, join us to watch Planes, Trains and Automobiles on Wednesday, November 16 at 3:00PM

Easily excitable Neal Page (Steve Martin) is somewhat of a control freak. Trying to get home to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with his wife (Laila Robins) and kids, his flight is rerouted to a distant city in Kansas because of a freak snowstorm, and his sanity begins to fray. Worse yet, he is forced to bunk up with talkative Del Griffith (John Candy), whom he finds extremely annoying. Together they must overcome the insanity of holiday travel to reach their intended destination. (Rated R, running time 1h 32m).

If you have movie suggestions, please stop by the office and let us know!
Trivia for Seniors Interest List
We are hoping to add a monthly trivia contest following lunch and want to gauge interest of our participants. Our trivia master is 74 yr old Larry De Young, a long-time Coastside resident, who wants you to get those “Little Grey Cells” working. Speaking of grey cells, what fictional detective used that phrase often? What was his nationality? Who was the author? Wait, maybe you are one of the “usual suspects” who like geography and films. What famous film was set in a city in Morocco? Who played the lead? What actor in that film uttered the quote “Round up all the usual suspects”? Are the answers to these questions a “complete unknown"? Don’t worry, we will also do music trivia. Here is one: “How many roads must a man walk down”? Just kidding, but the author and singer of those lyrics is not a “complete unknown”. What is his name? What is his real name? If these questions have your synapses snapping and you're interested in participating, please let Hope know at hatmore@seniorcoastsiders.org. We will hold an initial meeting with participants and Larry so he can tailor the trivia to our community!
International Days in the Dining Room International cuisine AND special programming? What could be better!? One day each month will feature an international dish accompanied by trivia, games, music, or activities about the featured country. Join us Wednesday, November 9th to celebrate Italy with a delicious chicken risotto and some fun entertainment. Passports not required!

NEW Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Line - 988 Similar to 911, this new, simplified tool will connect those in need with representatives specifically trained in the management of suicide risk and other mental health crises. One of the goals of the new number is to reduce the use of 911 for suicide and mental health crises, because calling 911 in such situations too often results in inadequate or inappropriate intervention by the police or unnecessary hospitalization or incarceration. This lifeline is critical for older adults and those living with a disability because such individuals are at greater risk for mental
health crises and suicide. If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health emergency, call 988.
Beacon - Tidings Connection
AAUW HMB has a dynamic program for our November gathering, which is open to the public. At 6:30PM on Monday, November 7, at the Half Moon Bay Library, our featured speaker will be retired lawyer Barbara Creed. Last year, Ms. Creed gave her presentation on Zoom. This year, we are thrilled that she will be speaking to us in person. She will lead us in a discussion of upcoming SCOTUS cases. Through Ms. Creed's popular interactive discussion about cases pending before the Supreme Court, she will help us gain an understanding of how the court does its work and also gain an appreciation for the complexities of the cases it handles. Three cases will be chosen from those under consideration by the court this term. Creed will brief us on the facts and issues involved in each case and lead a discussion. Afterward, we’ll vote on how we believe the Court should decide each case.

Contemplative Practice for Resilience and Well-Being
Contemplative practice behaviors include activities such as meditation, prayer, breath awareness, gratitude, and compassion. There is substantial scientific evidence that contemplative practice behaviors provide physical and psychosocial health benefits. Contemplative practices have been shown to strengthen resilience, self-awareness, mindfulness, self-regulation and distress tolerance.

Translating this science into impact, Senior Coastsiders is pleased to offer a new series that will be delivered by content experts and is designed to build contemplative practice behaviors and promote resilience. These free sessions will occur monthly until April 2023 with some taking place via Zoom and others in person at Senior Coatsiders. A resource booklet will be developed to assist interested individuals in finding out more information about contemplative practices.

Session 4 Breathwork 101 - Tuesday, November 22 4:00-5:00PM

In this hands-on class, you will learn about the physiology of normal breathing, how stress and habit can disrupt this process, how to assess your own breathing, and the best breathwork practices for sleep, relaxation, mood, and high blood pressure. The presenter, Leena Pandya, ND BCB, is a Postdoctoral Scholar-Fellow at the Osher Center for Integrative Health at UCSF. She obtained her doctorate in naturopathic medicine and is a board-certified biofeedback practitioner, with over 5 years of experience working with patients. Dr. Pandya’s research interests primarily revolve around integrative solutions for common primary care complaints, with a focus on the utilization of mind-body interventions for disease treatment and management.

In a study conducted among older adults right here on the Coast, individuals who reported high levels of resilience had long held behaviors of contemplative practices that helped them effectively adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, this study found a strong relationship between higher resilience and improved well-being. This study has just been published in an academic journal after having gone through a rigorous peer review process. If you would like to read the study, it can be accessed HERE.

Supporting Senior Coastsiders
Just for Fun!

A Note from the Executive Director, Sandi Winter
The team at Senior Coastsiders has been gathering information from our community of participants, staff, board members, and key informants to inform our vision development and strategic planning. We’re projecting out to the year 2030. Why 2030? Well, according to the US Census, the year 2030 marks an important demographic turning point in U.S. history because by 2030, all baby boomers will be older than age 65. This will expand the size of the older population so that 1 in every 5 residents will be at retirement age. The aging of baby boomers means that within just a couple of decades, older people are projected to outnumber children for the first time in U.S. history.

The data that we’ve gathered so far has some great suggestions for future programming, for example, to increase intergenerational activities and partner with other organizations to provide more opportunities for active seniors such as tennis, pickleball, and swimming. The topic of technology use was frequently raised. During COVID there was a steep increase among older adults in the use of technology for web-based socialization and telehealth. While recognizing that there are numerous challenges to technology use by older adults (increased risk of scams/fraud, lack of access to hardware/the internet, inadequate skill proficiency), there are exciting new possibilities.

For example, the Valley Metro Regional Public Transportation Authority of Phoenix, Arizona conducted a demonstration pilot project study with about 50 people with mobility limitations (about 20% of whom were older adults) to explore the potential behavioral impacts of autonomous (self-driving) vehicles.[1] Key findings published in 2021 were that study participants felt safe; found the autonomous vehicle services more convenient than other typical transportation options; engaged in more out-of-home activities as a result of the autonomous vehicles option, and felt they would be comfortable riding alone, without a safety operator. I can totally imagine a future where older adults in our community will be taken to medical appointments “over the hill” in self-driving, autonomous cars!

Another promising development by researchers at the Stanford Biomechatronics Laboratory, is that of a boot-like exoskeleton that increases walking speed and reduces effort.[2] The aim is to help people with mobility impairments, particularly older people and those who are beginning to experience mobility decline due to disability, to move through the world with greater ease, improved balance and reduced joint pain.

These two technologies have the potential to improve our ability to get around - inside and outside our homes - and I’m excited by future possibilities that I can’t even imagine at present.
Take care.
Sandi
