Power Walking into 80: How One Woman Celebrated Her Milestone Birthday by Completing the Senior Coastsiders
Half Moon Bay Half Marathon
When most people think about how they’d like to celebrate their 80th birthday, a quiet dinner or a trip with family might come to mind. But for Pam Dunnett (pictured right with her daughter Kate and husband Rob), who has been power walking for decades, the perfect way to mark the occasion was to take on a challenge: completing the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Run Half Marathon—on her 80th birthday.
Her journey to the starting line began long before that October morning. She has always been active—playing tennis in her younger years before transitioning to power walking. Over the years, she’s walked three Avon 60-mile fundraising walks from Santa Barbara to Malibu, each covering 20 miles a day over three days. “It takes a lot of practice,” she said. “But I love it. And the fundraising part makes it even more meaningful.” She’s also no stranger to distance events, having completed five full marathons and six half marathons. “I love being out on beautiful coastal trails,” she said. “It’s even better when I’m walking with my youngest daughter.” These days, she also keeps up with Zumba three times a week, a routine that keeps her strong, balanced, and energized.
A Milestone Run
This wasn’t her first Pumpkin Run—she participated last year alongside a friend who raises funds for pediatric cancer. “It’s just such a wonderful community on the coast,” she said. “The scenery, the people—it’s all so uplifting.”
But this year was special. As she turned 80, she wanted to celebrate not with cake, but with a finish line. “I didn’t know what to expect when I came around that final corner,” she said. “I thought maybe no one would be there—but then I saw my husband waiting for me and the staff and volunteers of Senior Coastsiders there to cheer me over the finish line. It was very special.
Her family was fully behind her plan from the start. “They told me, ‘Go for it!’” she said. “Only my youngest daughter joined me this time, but everyone was cheering me on.”
Training and Tenacity
Even for someone who walks every day, preparing for a half marathon takes dedication. “I walk four to five miles a day, but I had to build that up to get strong for this event,” she said. “It had been a while since my last big race.”
There were setbacks along the way, including a knee injury from pickleball, but she took it in stride—adjusting her training, listening to her body, and staying focused. “You just keep moving,” she said. “That’s what matters.”
Race Day Reflections
Race day dawned cool and foggy—a blessing for endurance walkers, even if it meant her daughter couldn’t see the ocean. The atmosphere, though, was bright with energy. “The volunteers were amazing, cheering us on,” she said. “And the other participants—everyone was inspiring each other. It really felt like a community effort.”
By the time she crossed the finish line, she felt not just proud but grateful—to her family, to her training, and to the community that made the event possible.
Living Well at Every Age
Staying active isn’t just a hobby for her—it’s a way of life. “It plays a big role in my well-being,” she said. “And volunteering is just as important. Staying connected to people keeps you healthy.”
Her advice for others who want to stay active as they age? “Stay involved—physically, socially, and in your community. Do things with friends or family. It gets you out of bed in the morning,” she said with a laugh.
And she’s not done yet. “I’m already thinking about another half marathon,” she admitted. “Having a goal and achieving it—it’s good for people, no matter how old you are.”
Celebrating the Journey
After the race, she celebrated with a well-earned margarita and plenty of smiles. If she could give her younger self one piece of advice about aging, it would be simple: “Take care of yourself. Eat properly, sleep well, exercise, and stay involved in different things. And don’t forget to enjoy life—go to the farmers market, listen to music, have fun.”
As for the soundtrack to her 80th birthday half marathon? Without hesitation, she answered: “Old Time Rock and Roll.”
And really, that says it all—a classic tune for someone proving that age is just a number, and joy, movement, and community never go out of style.
Take care.
Sandi
