A Note from the Executive Director
Hello everyone,

I was born in Zimbabwe, a small country to the north of South Africa and lived there until my early twenties. During that time, I was eligible to vote only once – and did so. From Zimbabwe I moved to South Africa where I lived as a permanent resident for 17 years. During this time, I was eligible to vote only once at the very historic general elections held in April 1994 that resulted in the election of the great statesman Nelson Mandela as the first truly democratically elected leader of South Africa. The elections were the first in which citizens of all races were allowed to take part and were therefore also the first held with universal adult suffrage. The election marked the culmination of the four-year process that ended apartheid. April 27 is now a public holiday in South Africa, aptly called Freedom Day. In both Zimbabwe and South Africa thousands of people died for the right to vote during civil wars that lasted for decades. I lived through these civil wars so I am acutely aware of the sacrifices made by so many to ensure that all citizens can have their votes counted and their voices heard. Although I moved to the United States in 2003, it wasn’t until ten years later in 2013 that I became eligible to vote as a naturalized US Citizen, and I make sure to exercise this right at every opportunity.
This year – 2020 - marks the 100th anniversary of when the federal government of the United States certified states’ ratification of the 19th amendment pertaining to voting rights for women. The federal amendment mandates “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” Voting is the basic building block that gives people the power to control their government and to shape the policies they want and the future direction of their town, state, and country. The right to vote is precious and if you have it, you should use it.

For the convenience of older adults in our community, Senior Coastsiders will have a ballot drop box located in the lobby of our building at 925 Main St., Half Moon Bay from October 1st until November 3rd. This box will be accessible Mondays to Fridays between 8:00am-5:00pm and I strongly encourage you to use it to drop off your signed ballot.

With very best wishes,
Sandi
