Native American Lifeways of the Half Moon Bay Area and San Francisco Peninsula with speaker Mark Hylkema, presented by the Half Moon Bay History Association. This presentation will review ancestral indigenous lifeways and their historic persistence through the early Spanish colonial period to today. Speaker Mark Hylkema is the Santa Cruz District Cultural Resources Program Manager for California State Parks. He has 42 years experience in California archaeology, Native American culture, and history of the Spanish Colonial period. Tuesday, October 18, doors open at 5:30PM and program begins at 6:00PM. NEW Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Line - 988 Similar to 911, this new, simplified tool will connect those in need with representatives specifically trained in the management of suicide risk and other mental health crises. One of the goals of the new number is to reduce the use of 911 for suicide and mental health crises, because calling 911 in such situations too often results in inadequate or inappropriate intervention by the police or unnecessary hospitalization or incarceration. This lifeline is critical for older adults and those living with a disability because such individuals are at greater risk for mental
health crises and suicide. If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health emergency, call 988.

Beacon - Tidings Connection
Join with AAUW Half Moon Bay Branch, at the HMB Library, on Monday, October 17, 6:30PM. to hear guest speaker, Katie Moore, share her personal insights on the implementation of Title IX. June 23, 2022 was the 50th anniversary of the enactment of Title IX. Title IX protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance. Probably most widely known for its impact in athletics, it also includes STEM education. Ms. Moore is the Athletic Director and Upper School PE teacher at Sea Crest School. Katie, a lifelong athlete, started playing soccer at age seven. She has participated in both track and badminton events through the years
but soccer remains her constant. She currently coaches seven different
teams at Sea Crest - both boys and girls. Ms. Moore is well acquainted with the disparities that still exist in athletics and will share these findings.
For your comfort, we suggest you wear a mask and bring a water bottle.
Note: All AAUW meetings held at the library are open to the public.
Welcome!

Contemplative Practice for Resilience and Well-Being
Contemplative practice behaviors include activities such as meditation, prayer, breath awareness, gratitude, and compassion. There is substantial scientific evidence that contemplative practice behaviors provide physical and psychosocial health benefits. Contemplative practices have been shown to strengthen resilience, self-awareness, mindfulness, self-regulation and distress tolerance.
Translating this science into impact, Senior Coastsiders is pleased to offer a new series that will be delivered by content experts and is designed to build contemplative practice behaviors and promote resilience. These free sessions will occur monthly until April 2023 with some taking place via Zoom and others in person at Senior Coatsiders. A resource booklet will be developed to assist interested individuals in finding out more information about contemplative practices.
Session 3 - Tuesday, October 25 4:00-5:00PM (in person)
Tai chi is a practice that involves a series of slow gentle movements and physical postures, a meditative state of mind, and controlled breathing. During this session, you will learn about and practice Sun Style Tai chi. This session will be led by Maria Lara, MS, RSMT. She has been using somatic practices for more than 20 years and is certified in Body-Mind Centering. She teaches a two-part body dynamics and aging course at the Institute of Aging and has Yoga Teacher certification. Please register HERE or call or stop by the Senior Coastsiders office.

In a study conducted among older adults right here on the Coast, individuals who reported high levels of resilience had long held behaviors of contemplative practices that helped them effectively adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, this study found a strong relationship between higher resilience and improved well-being. This study has just been published in an academic journal after having gone through a rigorous peer review process. If you would like to read the study, it can be accessed HERE.

Supporting Senior Coastsiders
|
|
Two events that take place over Pumpkin Festival weekend (Saturday October 15th and Sunday October 16th this year) are critical fundraisers for Senior Coastsiders that provide financial support for our programs and services.
One activity is to "sell" parking spaces at Shoreline Station. We are grateful to the owners and tenants at Shoreline Station for allowing us to do this. The other activity is the 44th Annual Pumpkin Run that will take place on October 16th. We are very grateful to those who have sponsored this event - New Leaf, Fog Town Toys, Haynes, Beffel & Wolfeld LLP, Cozzolino Christmas Trees, Sports Basement, and Goldworks. Please support these organizations!
The revenue we receive over this weekend helps us carry out our mission of promoting successful aging for older adults on the Coast.

A Note from the Executive Director, Sandi Winter
|
|
I am on the leadership team of the Age Forward Coalition which is a broad consortium of San Mateo County nonprofit and community organizations and advocates that serve older adults, adults with disabilities and their caregivers. The Coalition engages in advocacy and acts as a catalyst for community partners to find funding to maintain, protect, promote, and enhance equitable services and support for the populations we serve. The Age Forward Coalition has joined with other nonprofits – Choose Children, Puente de la Costa Sur, Caminar, Coastside Hope, and the Youth Leadership Institute – in a forum to pose questions to the two candidates running to fill the District 3 seat on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. This event was organized by Thrive Alliance which is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting and supporting the nonprofit sector in San Mateo County. Because nonprofits are nonpartisan and rooted in local communities, we are well positioned to participate in forums and increase public understanding of the candidates running. A candidate forum is also a powerful tool to increase recognition for our organization and the community we serve. I asked the candidates how they plan to 1) champion improved healthcare access for older adults living on the Coast, or transportation for medical appointments “over the hill”; 2) spend Measure K and district funds under their control to align with the unique needs of San Mateo County older adults and people with disabilities and 3) address the issue of housing shortages to ensure middle income older Coastside adults have a variety of housing options available to them so that they can continue to live in this community.
Why is it important who gets elected to the Board of Supervisors? Well, a major task of the Board of Supervisors is to manage the public money which comes to the county from property tax, sales tax, fees, and federal and state income grants. Did you know that in July this year, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved a recommended San Mateo County budget of $3.4 billion for FY 2022-23. That’s a lot of money! While a lot of these funds are already ear marked for specific programs and projects, the Board of Supervisors has a particular pot of money under their control called Measure K funds. Measure K is a countywide half-cent sales tax extension passed by local voters in November 2016 to support essential County services and to maintain or replace critical facilities. Since its inception, Measure K has resulted in total revenue of $694,532,669. In 2021 the Measure K revenue was $88,750,803. Raising the awareness of members of the Board of Supervisors about the important issues and needs of older adults on the Coast is needed to ensure we are considered in future allocations of Measure K and other discretionary funds.
Another reason why it’s important who gets elected to represent our District on the Board of Supervisors is that a large part of our District is unincorporated, including Montara, Moss Beach, El Granada, La Honda, Loma Mar, and Pescadero. What difference does it make if you live in an unincorporated area compared to a city or town? City residents receive public services – such as police, fire and park and recreation services – from their city, which is overseen by a City Manager and governed by a City Council. Residents of unincorporated areas receive services, such as road maintenance, police and planning and building review, from the County. Some services, such as streetlight and sewer maintenance are provided by special districts, many of which are supported by the County.
The County Board of Supervisors serves as the local governing body for the unincorporated area. I encourage you to visit the Thrive Alliance website to listen to the recording of the Candidate Forum so that you can make an informed decision about who you want to represent you as the District 3 Supervisor.
Take care.
Sandi
