A Note from the Executive Director
Hello everyone

Our community is dealing with a range of adversities that can seem overwhelming. The American Psychological Association[1] recommends the following healthy ways to manage your stress.

  • Take care of yourself - eat right, get enough sleep, drink plenty of water and engage in regular physical activity
  • Ensure you have a healthy mind and body through activities like yoga or taking a short walk that will enhance both your physical and mental health
  • Make time for yourself - even if it's just simple things like reading a good book or listening to your favorite music
  • Accept help from supportive friends and family - this can improve your ability to manage stress

And it may also be helpful to take things one day at a time. If we obsess about either the past or the future, then we may miss the possibilities of the present.

On a more positive note, welcome to September! What an interesting month. It’s the first month of Autumn and includes a number of official observance days such as Labor Day (9/7), Patriot Day (9/11), Grandparents Day (9/13) and International Day of Peace (9/21). How will you celebrate these special days? We would love to hear your stories.

September is also National Happy Cat Month and includes National Hug Your Hound Day (9/8), Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day (9/13), International Talk Like a Pirate Day (9/19) and National Punctuation Day (9/24). This year’s Autumnal Equinox falls on September 22 at 6:31 am, PDT. At this time, there are approximately equal hours of daylight and darkness. And do you know what happened on September 17, 1787?[2] (See below for the answer).

If there is anything we can help you with at this time or if you have stories to share, please give us a call at 650-726-9056, email us at swinter@seniorcoastsiders.org or drop us a line at 925 Main St, Half Moon Bay, CA, 94019. We look forward to hearing from you.

With very best wishes

Sandi

Our young friends at Sea Crest School have formed a group called Roots and Shoots that they hope will be a virtual meeting space for students and older Coastside adults. It is a place for students to practice reading aloud, share creative ideas and crafts, or just spread some news with our Coastside seniors. Their hope is that seniors will also share with them and that is where you come in! Do you have a story to share? It can be written and submitted by email to ashandley@seacrestschool.org, or if you prefer to do a recorded video via Zoom, that can be arranged with Hope at Senior Coastsiders, hatmore@seniorcoastsiders.org or call 650-726-9056 for more details. Check out their student designed website at Roots and Shoots and learn more about the students who are eager to share with Coastside seniors!
Zoom Tutorials If you are still wondering what the heck Zoom is and thinking it is time you find out, here are a few great tutorials from the Institute for Successful Longevity:

Using Zoom To Stay Connected Speaking of Zoom, did you know that you can join a Zoom meeting from your smart phone in addition to a computer, laptop, or tablet? And did you know that Zoom isn't just for classes and presentations but is used by friends to stay in touch? And honestly, you don't event need to have an account, it can be as simple as clicking on the link sent by the host! We know that a lot of people are missing the interactions that they normally get during lunch in our dining room and so we would like to help bring our friends back together - at least digitally. Our plan is to create some virtual lunch tables (and yes, you can save seats) so that you can see and chat with your friends as we continue to shelter in place. If you are interested in participating, please contact our office at 650-726-9056 or by emailing hatmore@seniorcoastsiders.org
