Deschutes Public Library and Bend Park and Rec Partner to Offer Senior Tech Classes

Deschutes Public Library is excited to partner with Bend Park and Recreation District to bring Senior Planet tech classes to our community. This new offering is a natural extension of our popular Technology Troubleshooting service, where we’ve supported individuals with one-on-one help for devices and digital questions. Senior Planet classes build on that foundation by providing engaging, structured learning opportunities on topics like smartphone basics, online safety, and staying connected. Together, these services create a supportive pathway—from quick fixes to deeper learning—helping older adults build confidence and independence with technology in a welcoming, community-centered environment.

Community Spotlight: Fire Safety Resources

Prescribed burning starts in Spring and can bring smoky air to us in Central Oregon. While these burns help protect our forests and communities, they also create smoke, which can be harmful to your health. Whether it’s from wildfires, prescribed burns, or even campfires—breathing it in can be dangerous. Due to the mild winter, we are likely to see prescribed fire activity earlier than usual.

Deschutes County Health Services has a few tips for staying healthy: Close windows at night - smoke often settles overnight. Visit CentralOregonFire.org to get real-time updates and learn how to prepare your home. Text COFIRE to 888-777 for alerts about prescribed burn activity. Now is also a great time to prepare for wildfire season, when the smoke can show up without warning, and stick around for longer.

With wildfire season approaching, make sure you’re signed up for local emergency alerts so you can receive timely safety updates. Sign up here.

In addition, it might be helpful to know about Bend Fire Department’s Safety Outreach for Seniors Program (SOS). They offer a free review and advice about maximizing safety concerning fire and fall risks in your home. SOS services are conducted by a team of trained volunteers- many of whom are seniors. More information and consultation request form can be found here.

About the Author

Maybe you’ve strolled over to the library, but have you ever joined one of its walking groups? Led by Community Librarian Rya, these lively outings are part of the library’s mission to bring health and wellness outreach to every corner of Deschutes County. “I love picking up right where our walking group left off and hearing about the cool, library-centric things customers are sharing,” says Rya. She plays a key role in supporting the Library’s Senior Services programs and co-edits The Library Corner, a publication connecting isolated seniors with community news and library resources. If you’re new in town, Rya suggests stopping by the library or joining in on community events. “You’re guaranteed to meet a friendly face and find something to keep you busy as you settle in,” says Rya. Recently honored by her colleagues as the librarian with “Boundless patience,” Rya’s poised to bring extra holiday cheer to upcoming events, including a festive gift-wrapping party that promises to bring the community together.
